Otto, too, faced several attempts to kill him in his life. For those who don't understand German I want to translate that Otto got some kind of letter before his trip to Sarajewo. In this letter the Serbian Cetniks threatened him: "We will get you, too". Otto had this letter in is pocket all the time during his visit in Sarajewo.
They did not get him. The Lord called him on July 4th, the day before yesterday. He will get his awards where he is now.

Correction: The US went to war in WW I because there was much pressure from people like Teddy Roosevelt and because Wilson (an Anglophile) had been informed that Britain could not last another 3 months without seeking an armistice! What a terrible thing! We helped prolong a war as did Clemenceau who refused Kaiser Karl's feeler for an armistice in 1917. Wilson was ingenuous and though Europe was a Simple patchwork of nationalities, but it was not, so he helped destroy Central Europe.
There was an additional factor. The Tsar abdicated in March 1917 and it was feared that Russia would fail to stay in the war. By entering the war in April of 1917 the USA assured the allies that they would be able to replace the Russian effort should Russia make a separate peace. Once Lenin came to power in October of 1917 that is exactly what happened. The USA had decided long before 1917 not to allow any hegemon to rule Europe. Entering WWI was a foregone conclusion once Russia reached the point of exhaustion.

He visits the places which Archeduke Franz Ferdinand had been. When he is asked if the killing of the Archeduke was an assasination, an act of terrorism, he answers "Yes, it was". Franz Ferdinand's great-grandson at the end of the film says he is a christian so he forgives the murderers.

Yes, it will be 100 years in a little over 2 years. Terrible date and terrible destiny. Narrow ethnic ambitions helped destroy a united central Europe under the Habsburgs. Moreover, the Archduke with his Czech consort was disposed to advancing the cause of Slavic peoples within the dual monarchy. What a difference that would have made. After WW I, the splintered ethnic groups vied against one another instead of With one another as they would have under the Habsburgs.

@@alfa447 Die gesamte Weltgemeinschaft hat die Annexion anerkannt. Erzherzog Franz Ferdinand hatte nichts mit der Bosnienannexion zu tun. Er war nie "Imperator".

Die Abhaengigkeiten der Staaten, die geschichtlichen Hintergruende. Das Buch ist extrem uebergreifend und gibt ein gutes Gesamtbild der Zeit vor dem 1. Weltkrieg.

Actually the greatest disaster that created the basis for WW1 was the supreme stupidity of Kaiser Willie as he 1) was the favorite nephew of Queen Victoria, this still pretty influential 2) had an extremely well run if militaristic state 3) that same state had pensions, healthcare and public works WAY AHEAD if anything anywhere in Europe 3) obviously great armed forces.... had he USED his brain he could have became THE MEDIATOR as he was cousin of King George, the Czar and THE most influential person alive in THAT moment.. he could have MADE "EUROPE" literally one hundred years ago... unfortunately he did not....
You make some fine points. The question is how much ability did Kaiser Wilhelm have to make policy. The Imperial German General Staff were gung ho for war. The Kaiser's big mistake was giving the " blank cheque" to Emperor Franz Jozef to deal with Serbia as he pleased. Austria pushed too hard on Serbia and would not have declared war on Serbia if Imperial Germany did not have its back.

Right after the assassination a beautiful memorial column was built near the bridge which is just across the street. After 1918 the column or were there two columns (not sure) were destroyed by the Serbs.1918-1941 The Serbs then put a nationalist memorial on the wall.1941-1945 In WW2 the Wehrmacht took it down. There are even videos of that moment. After the war the communist put the Serb nationalist memorial up again 45-92.
Somewhere after 96 a new neutral memorial was created.

Eigentlich wollte Kaiser Wilhelm II. keinen Krieg. Letztlich überschlugen sich nach dem Attentat von Sarajewo die Ereignisse und die Welt schlitterte in die Urkatastrophe des 20. Jahrhunderts. Österreich wollte den Krieg gegen Serbien, obgleich Serbien alle Bedingungen erfüllte.
Die wollten doch alle den Krieg da oben. Auch mit dem Hintergrund dass alles kaputt geht, Endlich vom Absolutismus frei zu kommen war dem kleinen Volk wichtiger. Gottes Gnadentum, die Überheblichkeit allein ist schon Sünde.
