Gorgeous car. When you showed the car with the top on and it looked no less beautiful and luxurious, it stole my heart. I’m no devote of ‘50 or 60s cars, but that was a beautiful car and I’m betting and going that you sold it well to an appreciative owner.
I like the direction your taking. This Lincoln is spectacular and pretty rare. The Saab from last week was cool in a different way. Your picking some winners to put up for auction. Hope it sells for all the money. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, you lovable old curmudgeon! I couldn’t help but notice that windshield didn’t look like Dalton’s work.
I'm glad you mentioned the Lincoln Liquimatic transmission. Those were made for 1942 only and only 24 Lincolns were equipped with it. Ford recalled all of them and replaced them with manual transmissions. I have a 1942 Lincoln Continental that was originally equipped with it.
@@philipp9481 They were more of an experiment than anything. They had drivability and reliability issues. Unfortunately due to the war they found it cheaper and easier to replace them with a manual transmission.
They were originally designed with hide away headlights but it was decided at the last minute not to do it due to additional complications in production. That is the reason why the headlights are sunk deep into the front fenders with the deep headlight bezels.
Hey Bill, it's always a great day when you post a video & this rare Lincoln Cosmopolitan is stunning!!! I'm glad that you're enjoying decent weather!!! 34:18 Yes, the Hydramatic had 4 speeds but no torque converter, just a fluid coupling that was linked to one of the planetary gear sets so that the slippage became less significant as it shifted into the higher gears. The Dynaflow, in contrast, had only two speeds but had a torque converter that even had multiple elements (extra diverters?) and switch-pitch in some years, so it acted a little like an extra gearset. The Hydramatic was too rough for the torque-tube suspensions in Buicks, so the Dynaflow was used to keep the vibration (and acceleration, sadly) to a minimum.
Sad especially since the Buicks offered some of the most powerful V8s of the era. My '56 nailhead is second only to that year's FirePower Hemi, and the top-dollar Lincoln and Cadillac offerings.
Yup...I took my drivers license exam in the family 1959 Buick LeSabre convertible. It had a decently powerful 364ci V8, but the Dynaflow did not allow for very quick acceleration, compared to the other GM cars...but that fire-engine red convertible was so beautiful!
@@curbozerboomer1773I remember your 59 Buick convertible, it was a beautiful car! I took my test in a giant 53 beige Pontiac in 64, not sure which model but it was huge and had a bunch of chrome strips on the hood!
Bill, that Hydra-matic has 4 speeds. Putting it in "low" the car starts in first and shifts to second only. In drive range, it starts in second and shifts through third and fourth. The low ratio was seldom needed and in the '49 Oldsmobile's resulted in sudden tire chirping starts and customer complaints. So for 1950, the strategy was changed.
Hey Bill, I've followed all of your videos, and they''re all outstanding. But this one is very special to me because my father had a '51 Cosmo convertible that he absolutely adored when he was a young man. The car was long gone by the time I was born, but I got to hear a lot of stories, and see the photos of his Cosmo, which he was always proud to mention, was 2" longer than his father's Cadillac! Thanks so much for the in-depth tour of this beautiful machine. Would LOVE to take it home from Kissimmee, but I suspect it's going to go comfortably into 6 figures. Happy holidays, and good luck at the auction!
No, not a desirable era for people with deep pockets. 6 figure cars muscle cars like Chevelle’s, Camaro’s, GTO get the big money. People who would actually lust over this car are in nursing homes. It’s gorgeous don’t get me wrong but not a hot car.
We're in the middle of a winter storm right now in Cleveland OH where the temperature was 50 degrees at 4:00 this morning, and when I left for work at 5:30 my car showed 12 degrees and the roads were a solid sheet of ice....... but I'm not saying that to make you jealous Bill, I'm saying that you just couldn't be driving that car right now if you lived up here lol
Well that thing is amazingly solid sounding,, I remember back in 1983 in Houston next door to my office they had a 51' black 4 door for sale and I walked over on a hot summer day it was unlocked and I got in and checked it out and the keys were in it and I started it, it started instantly and went into a low silky idle... It had after market rear air conditioning I turned that on and it immediately started blowing cold air and lowered the low silky idol to a even lower low silky idol then I was playing with the windows and every time I lowered or raised a window the low lowered low silky idol became an even lower low low silky idol,,, lol, it was very impressive... I remember it being in the $4000 range which was big money in 1983... All those 1st generation Hydromatics were 4 speeds, they shifted 3 times..
154hp 275tq from the '51 337ci Lincoln. Not half bad, with a 4 speed Hydramatic or a manual transmission (last year for Lincoln till the 2000 Lincoln LS), it probably ran pretty well, it didn't have anything on the OHV 331 Caddy, Chrysler Hemi or Olds 303 OHV but, it was probably close to the Buick 322ci Fireball I8, it certainly would have walked a Pontiac Silver Streak I8. Neat car.
I'm in Minnesota and dealing with blizzard conditions, 40 mph wind, -11 air temp, and windchill in the 40 below range. But at least I'm not in Florida where the weather is so beastly😂😂😂. Stunningly beautiful car, and yes they were not the safest
That is an amazing car. I am picturing a leisurely drive down through the Keys with maybe How High The Moon by Les Paul and Mary Ford on the radio. Thanks for the tour and Merry Christmas.

In my comment above, these were originally designed with hide away headlights but in a last minute decision, the hide away headlights were eliminated to simplify production. I believe that the mechanisms were vacuum operated and the reliability issues could not be fully solved.
Those were the first completely new Lincoln's after Henry Ford passed away. First V8 Lincoln since the late 30s and the first year for automatic transmission supplied by GM. The first American car with a one piece curved windshield.
The one-piece windshield was a real selling point, in the early 50s...I believe my dad's 1950 Olds 98 also had the curved windshield, and people would comment on it! I loved it, because the previous family car-a 47 Chevrolet, had the split windshield, and as a little kid, I hated having to stare through that when at the local drive-in theatre.

Great job Bill! This fits the Curious Cars theme perfectly. I remember as a small kid playing inside my neighbors Cosmopolitan sedan. About five of us kids were in the car when somebody knocked it into neutral and that big assed thing began rolling backwards down the driveway and through the street into a tree with all kids inside screaming. Nobody was hurt and my neighbors mother ran out and drove it back up the driveway. The Lincoln was no worse for wear but but the tree carried the scars for ever after.
