Spongebob-"I didn't know this was a hat."
Kevin-"It wasn't."
Patrick- Maybe he got scared by your pink hat.
Spongebob- oh thats not a hat, thats my brain
*_"It was his hat, Mr. Krabs! HE WAS NUMBER ONE!"_*
Patrick: *Oh, you mean, like a weenie? "May I take you hat, sir? may I-"
Damnit guys! You took all the hat-related Spongebob quotes!!!!
when you pop the top of mushrooms the stem is pretty intact. the mushroom tops usually just pop off easily too. so i can see it as a hat or like real mushrooms i can see it as easily removable head pieces that just doesn't contain organs or anything since the stem on a Toad is where the arms, legs and face are.
also from a technical point. you never model a head under a hat if you don't plan on taking the hat off. in this case since toad are basically copies of eachother, if one did want to tip their bulb then you would only make that one toad with a head under the bulb to save on geometry and other reasons.
The headphones would vibrate through the spongy material in his head and result in him hearing it.
humans and some animals can do that too. remember those musical toothbrushes? I also wear my headphones on the sides of my head if they get too tight after a while, still works fine to me.
The obvious answer is that Nintendo has no idea, and that it's whatever they want it to be at that time.
Brastius some toads have it as a head some as a hat
Exactly!
Nikolai Rose why
Nikolai Rose a toad said his head was well insolated one has a hat ghost thing wich can only posses people when they dont have a hat on also hats on hats so some actualy have it as a hat and others as a head
Nikolai Rose so me saying that some of them have it as a head means that it's always hat?
This, this is the most important video on the internet
Hat or Head, what do you think?
Head
Dorkly hat
Dorkly It's gotta be a hat
there names are toad. Well, there fucking toads.
Nice guesses.
I DO insist that Mario frequently calls people 'paizanos' and yells 'pasta power!', though.
That's why he doesn't talk in the main series games!
I'm italian, I can confirm that we yell "pasta power" every day at every hour
Not Zelda
It’s only Pasta Power that make awakening and make me leave my bed every day
me too tbh
Idk I prefer the Italian gibberish more than anything
Not all toads can grow their mushroom heads, so some end up wearing replica hats until they eventually grown their own (if ever!)
That is my half-assed theory I came up with while watching this vid. now I must go to work... ToT
Thanks much for the vid!
The mushroom head is a parasite that takes over the persons brain... to protect themselves the Toads started wearing hats that look like the mushrooms, to protect them and to disguise themselves among the infected. It lead to a stalemate and neither side knows who is who, or what is what, but they know... if one uncovers the truth, the other side will take them.
Like balding men who wear wigs
Nintendo just confirmed that Toads head is not a hat.
I think that toads “head thing” is actually a life sucking fungus that is attached to his head sucking the blood out of him until he dies, that’s why the toads are all so short, they die young so they didn’t have much time to grow to their full height. RIP toad
Hello internet, welcome to Game Theory
... but was it the Kilian Experience?
ProXY One Music I was just thinking that too. This is a lot like game theory.
Biologically speaking, Toad wearing headphones over his mushroom head does make sense. It would just mean that the large lateral red spots are tympanic membranes stretched over some kind of fenestra (you see something similar in turtles and frogs in particular). Throughout the history of vertebrates, the ability to detect sound via impedance matching (converting vibration waves in air into a nerve signal) has evolved repeatedly. If Toads are mushroom people on a separate line of evolution to people like Mario and Peach, it would make sense for them to evolve this, especially in an environment like the Mushroom Kingdom, where important actions like powering up or getting attacked by an enemy are synchronised with electronic beeps and boops.
The obvious answer is that the cap is a fungus that acts as a sensory organ.
That's subconsciously what I've been going with, given that hitting it causes them to feel pain... And its a mushroom.
William Falls
If is so
How can Toad hold the Giant Block Of Ice over his head?
If it is a Sensory Organ it should be the most sensible part
and it should also bother them when they wear clothes over it
I'm still on Team Mind-Controlling-Mushroom.
That is exactly what people being mind controlled would tell us if it were true though, NegaSound...
Its a mushroom cap
What if its part of its head but CAN in fact be removed
They just choose not to cuz...ye
That's what I think.
Or perhaps they can't be removed, but they aren't fully connected to their head.
Since when did this become an argument? Who the heck thought that it looked like a hat?!
Confirmed that it is officially in fact his head
The answer is obvious
Afro
Hatfro
It's a fungus attacking the species and forcing them to work for peach.
Matpat?
Too much RUclips for today, leetlebob.
Good ol dorkly asking the hard hitting questions
“Hat or Head?”
Yes.
Toads use in Smash Bros also supports that the bulb is actually a part of his body. It could be a parasite though or something that lives in symbiose with Toad. Protect him from being hurt, and the shroom gets to travel around the world and get there spores everywhere. But hey this is a game where there are stars with eyes which makes you invincible.
you ever think that maybe the mushroom is the toad and the rest of the body is just the mind controlled people of mushroom kingdom before the fungus showed up
Michael Klump why can't the concept be used more than once?
Another point towards Team Head, the hair of Toad characters [excluding Toadette] could actually be their gills, or mycelium pseudo-hair...
That's just a theory, a dooooorkly theory.
I suspect the Toad in Odyssey "listens" to the music by enjoying the vibrations without actually hearing it
Cameytoe but how can you talk with them
Is that why they're always screaming? They like the vibrations?
Isn't vibration what's responsible for sound and by extension listening anyway?
Hat and Head
The Toad listening Music can be explained by the fact that he hears the music via the viabrations which filters the mushroom's cap (cap is the official name of this part of the Mushrooms)
And for me that make sense in both theories
This could be a friggin Splatfest…
oh god, yes!
Maybe it's both. After all, when you pick a mushroom
it doesn't actually hurt the fungus. The toads could grow "hats" on top of their heads and if you know it off there would just be a hole for another to grow
But that’s just a theory, a toad theory!
Can't wait for a Game Theorist Collab.
If this were a game theory it would be in 2 separate 18 minute parts with the exact same amount of information that mostly consists of MatPat cracking minutes of awkward jokes in between each singular fact.
... And if it were The Kilian Experience somehow Communism would reign supreme while one of the Dakotas would be the main export of llama based goods...
I'm leaning towards both on this. It's a part of their head, but with Toads being a fungus-like organism, that bulb is something that can be reshaped, recolored, repaired, replaced, and reattached (like an organic prosthetic kinda thing). With regards to the ears thing, Toads may be able to hear by using their bulb like a microphone, picking up ambient noise via sound vibrations. May also be usable to detect odors with their bulbs as well since, well...no noses...
I pose a new theory: That is actually the Toads’ Benis
Im on team hat, i always saw the hat as a religious item, much like the Sikhs, who always wear turbans (which covers the ears) so i always thought the toads were a society of people who's religion celebrated/worshipped mushrooms, and the different color vest/hat combinations denote family/clan much like tartan patterns in scotland
So you're on team head but you believe it's a hat? That's an oxymoronic and moronic statement.
In Mario & Luigi Paper Jam, a toad mentions something about his hat almost falling off.
But then again, this is also the same game where Starlow told Luigi to "Hurry up and put your mustache on before anyone sees!" So take this as you will...
Mario & Luigi Paper Jam isn't cannon
ER... Paper Mario games are canon to the Paper Canon continuity and the Regular Mario Canon is muddled as a lot of it is stage productions of various sorts... taking things to an annoying level beyond "it was just a dream" into "it was just a VERY elaborate Broadway Musical Production"
Where is the silly beard man? I can hears em, but I can't sees em!
It seems pretty obvious to me. It is neither a hat nor part of their head.. it's a mushroom. An external fungus, possibly an entirely different living thing. Why else would it "not be a hat" according to some sources, but also "not be part of his head" from others?
If it's a separate 'shroom, but is attached to his head (maybe a mutually dependent or symbiotic relationship evolved over the years), it explains both of these things, including the "our heads have insulation" bit. It also explains why you never see them take it off (in modern canon, not in crappy old cartoons) -- because it is physically growing out of their head.
Plus, it changes color with power ups, just like the bros overalls.
In regard to the question of how they hear, I believe they sense vibrations through their caps. (Caps as in mushroom caps, not hats.) The caps may be able to carry sound to some sort of internal auditory organ. After all, the shape of their skulls means their brains don't extend very far above the tops of their faces, so it's not unreasonable that something else could be in the space outside their craniums.
Ethan Hayes for this make sense with both theories
Ps: in Biology that part is really called Cap
It could be that toad's bulb is so soft and squishy that it even start vibrating from sounds, making it toad's actual ear
I was expecting to see something about how in super smash bros, when Peach brings out Toad, he sprays out a cloud of spores, like a mushroom cap.
Nintendo confirmed that it’s his head
im going with head, its the mushroom kingdom so it makes sence that it was called that becuase the inhabitants are mushroom like people and the name toad comes from toadstool a type of mushroom
Brandon Withnell But then how do they get their clothes on? Do they have zippers and velcro or something? I didn't know I needed to know this til now.
it was already mentioned in the video that that most wear vests, as for the ones who wear shirts could either be a flexible collar or their bluby head is flexible
Do you known in Biology that part of the Mushrooms is Called Cap
01 for the Hat though I hope it's his head. In the Mario Kart games the Hat or head represents a boost. Which is something added like a hat.
I did a bit of research, and yes it is possible to see some type of fungi via x ray. Pretend you have an x ray of your lungs. You all know what they look like? Good. We know what bones and muscle look like under x ray yes? Good. Now, imagine this. You have an outline of your left lung, but theres some small lumps sprouting from there. Theres your fungi. Those lumps. So if the electric attack cant detect the fungus, then it has to be a hat.
Its a mushroom cap.
The broad fleshy part of the mushroom and their body is the stem.
So both sides are correct.
Their heads are caps.
This will never solve the mystery. Nintendo's always going to be tight-lipped over it, because it's so much fun to troll people over that theory.
The Paper Mario games have another massive point for team hat. In the original Paper Mario there is a conductor Toad wearing some sort of peaked cap, he gives a blow of a whistle and briefly his hat jumps off his head revealing he's bald underneath. Additionally, all the shop toads not only have visors coming from their caps, they also have yellow shirts on beneath their vests suggesting they are able to pull a shirt on over their smaller head and that it's simply a hat. Also the toads in Shiver City and Starborn Valley wear earmuffs beneath their cap on the side of their heads. We can't see the back of them so we don't know if the band for their earmuffs is going beneath their cap or behind their head so this is really a point for neither. It also goes to further illustrate how weird that toad with the headphones was.
What if some roads have grown-in bulbs and other toads wear artificial hats to fit in? Like some people have a lot of natural hair and others have a wig
But there is a multi hat trend in the mushroom kingdom: look at the broodals!
It is neither a hat nor the head. It is the cap. the rest of the toad (eyes, mouth etc.) composes the stalk. The cap of a mushroom, or toadstool is where the spores of the mushroom is located. So it isn't headwear, it's their junk.
Toads could be toads with hats, but that wouldn't really make any sense either.
What if the hat is stuck to his head and he can’t take it off?
Toad has it easy. If you drop him on his head, he doesn't feel the pain.
The truth? The truth is that it's pixels.
With the headphones, it is possible that toads process noise similarly to snakes, with the vibrations effecting tiny hairs
Maybe have two species of toads...a specie use a hat and the other specie no
race war
And for uniforms into a single race
The Variant without the Mushrooms’s Cap Part
Started to wearing actually Has(?)
XD
Birdo's facial orifice is an ovipositor. In Super Mario Bros. 2, we only ever see that orifice being used to deposit eggs, never to eat, so functionally, it is more an ovipositor than a mouth.
Birdo's orifice: Mouth or Snatch?
Family Friend: "What is Tony up to now a days?"
Tony's Mom: "He's... a researcher."
I'm still baffled and annoyed by the fact that people are still so confused about the "Toad listening to music through his mushroom" thing. Has no one else in this entire world ever hear of internal ears? You know, like the ones moles have? Just me? Okay.
Snipper Joey no one has heard of fiction
a lvl 3 mage That too but even if you want to overanalyze fiction as if it's real at least do some research.
Those headphones over the toad's head could be explained by the red spots on toads head being like a tympanic membrane that frogs have. Gotta love freshman biology
I personally think it's a hat...or maybe it's an infection and neither a hat or a part of his head 😲
The final toad could be listening to the music through vibrations.
It’s a wig. Hair comes out of it. Depending on the different wigs. Colors. Come on guys.
Yeah, it's kinda interesting how the fact that hair exists is being thoroughly ignored. :D
Honestly if the toad's bulbs were their heads it would honestly be hard to even balance their head correctly without flipping upside down.
Should examination of in-game models count? There are plenty of examples of NPCs and avatars who do not have a fully-modeled scalp due to them wearing a hat.
You say his squishyness hasn't been seen about his head but if you have two people in the 3D world, it actually shows how squishy it looks by one jumping on the other.
To be fair you have to have a very high IQ to understand Dorkly
Rick and Morty yes I am I watch you (The Actually Show)
To be fair, you just learned the 3 year old copy pasta
Rick and Morty
C_137 or nah
More a very low QI.
i would say high intelligence is necessary but not an intelligence quotient, testing ones ability to learn and quantifying it with numbers is unreliable, fallacious and asinine.
I say HELL YA! His name IS Mario Mario with brother Luigi Mario, and he does routinely say pasta power and does "The Mario" as his only dance move at parties.
Considering the only time we see the Mushroom 'cap' in anything but pristine condition is the Paper Mario games - which as of Paper Jam is canonically established as a storybook universe where everyone is made of paper - one could reasonably conclude that the Toad with the patched cap got cut up and had to stitch himself back together.
Given that's the most conclusive detail I saw for Team Hat, pretty sure that points things heavily to Team Head.
Yeah Nintendo is desperately trying to make sure stuff like that doesn’t happen again so I’d take it as it was never supposed to be like that
It's an organic hat that grows from their heads
So their hair
The one time you credit the artist, you cover the credit up with your own logo. Nice.
Ikr
well I have my own conclusion: what if in some games the bulb is a hat and in others it's toad's head?
How can they put on their hats with those tiny arms in Super Mario Odissey?
MrGalego95 What about their clothes? How do they get them on then with those tiny arms?
They throw their hats in the air and then catch them on their heads. This is why hats are so popular. Wearing one is proof of your agility and finesse.
I'd like to bring up a possible theory for the "paradox" Tony brought up at the end of this video - the toad wearing headphones on his bulb, which I firmly believe, have believed prior to this video, and will always believe until Nintendo officially confirms or denies it, is a head. The toads don't have ears, but frequently talk and are talked to. Now either they are freakishly good at lip-reading, or they have some way of hearing (we'll ignore the fact that it was probably just a design choice to forgo the ears). My guess is the bulb is able to pick up vibrations, and therefore provide a way to "hear" for the otherwise deaf toads, much the same as balloons are used for the hearing impaired. Of course helmets pose a problem, as it would block the vibrations and render them deaf, but when you take into account just how large the bulbs are and therefore how sensitive they must be, chances are they can pick up vibrations through the helmets. The last problem that must be addressed is the fact that moving would be incredibly loud to the toads, as their own footfalls would most likely be deafening. However, toads are never moving when we talk to them, perhaps so that they can hear us. In fact, toads are seen moving relatively rarely (because it's so loud???), the only major times is when they are player controlled - and that would make a very boring game indeed if they weren't able to move.
If you made it all the way in, good job, thanks for reading my uninformed ravings.
Yeah, it’s been said by Nintendo that the Super Show isn’t canon, but the other evidence is valid for both sides. Personally, I believe it’s his head.
I would say that the toad wearing headphones on his bulb is a score for team head - it seems that they hear out of their bulb, which would suggest that it’s part of their physiology.
ITS HIS HEAD PEOPLE, ITS 2018
I always figured it was a hat because in Paper Mario TTYD, the engineer on the Excess Express doesn't wear a mushroom cap
Hat or head or hair
Parasitic life form of fungal variety that was introduced by Princess Peach during her invasion of the Mushroom Kingdom. Actually has permanently attached to all Toads and subverted the entire society.
Of all things this many hours of research, recording, and editing you _could_ have done... you guys chose... this?
And why did I watch the whole damn thing and actually think about it?!
Evil Black Cat hey, you're the one with all the time, just like everyone else on this platform who doesn't use it specifically for tutorials.
Marco Hurtado Do you like to just watch the videos just to take the wind out of the sails of light-hearted comments? You must be a _gas_ at parties...
Are you.... trying to make a point?
Evil Black Cat I was answering your last question. I was just trying to be sarcastically funny. Sorry if I came off as rude.
This came out on my birthday dorkly your the best animation channel
I've always thought it was a hat. Maybe it's because I've seen Rastafarians before seeing Toad.
It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan. Or its a turban like hat. The clothing would fit. Also the same style as doki doki panic. I ever thought, it was a hat because of that. Like Aladin.
in the first paper mario you see them wear a turbant in dry dry outpost on chapter 2
diego mejia Maybe. But the normal Design could also be an inspiration. ;) And still later wear a real turban.
Actual toads’ ears resemble flat discs. Just putting it out there.
Probably their heads. Pull it out and you'll hear their scream and their fungus root being pulled from their inner soft mushroom flesh.
Of course Julia made that drawing of Toad revealing his brain.
Toads in a game have hair going out from below the mushroom almost like it's a hat. "Evidence isn't strong enough got team hat" yea....ok
So? I have hair in my ears and nostrils, does that mean I can take them off?
yes because thats the area of the body we are talking about. Question is there anyone that has hair on top of their head and then something that isnt a hat on top of that. No? ok good to know
First off: You just said I can take my nostrils off "because thats the area of the body we are talking about".
Secondly: Anyone can have something on top of their head even though it's not actually a hat.
Thirdly: My point was that there are other places where hair can come out of, without necessarily being on the top of the head. Some toads have hair growing on their head, some have hair growing inside their head.
And don't forget that they are actually mushrooms, not humans.
First off: Learn sarcasm, i was making a joke how you went from the top of your head to your nose and ears. two different parts of the human anatomy.
Secondly: Unless born with a birth defect the top most part of your head is hair or you are bald. there is nothing above it unless you add it to your head.
Thirdly: They have never been proven to be mushrooms, if Nintendo came out saying they were mushrooms the hat argument wouldn't be a thing. Yes they are called mushroom people, but that can be because they where mushroom shaped hats.
Oh, I'm sorry then. But in my defence, it is quite hard to know if a stranger is sarcastic just by looking at some text. Well, I'll leave now. Bye.
Head because in Super Mario Odyssey there is a Cappy on a Toad and a Cappy can’t put itself on another hat.
What about team 'host for a parasitic mushroom'
TruePlatypusKnight oh, well that's just unsettling
I got stuck on this video and ACTUALLY thought I was watching game theory for a second...
bro. what are we doing with our lives?
hahaha, u got me at "no one uses multiple hats outside team fortress "
Damn mattpatt's voice is different...
Mario Once tried messing with the Toads
He got TOAD!
I think is a hat because Toad inspiration seems to be a Genie and the hat is more like a Turban they don't take it off because its their culture
Ioannis Morakis
True
I like this argument. It fits.
On the note about Birdo, it's likely a mouth. There are plenty of species (primarily fish and frogs) that keep their eggs and young in their mouth, or in rare cases their stomach.
Granted that's more for aquatic life, such as fish and amphibians. But it is a thing that occurs in nature.
*Oh HELL NO*
I believe the road head is like a camel jump. It’s filled with backup nutrients or water and is capable of moving and shrinking for hats or as needed. It is not his skull, but it is a part of his anatomy. And like lizard tails they may be removable if needed.
