Simply put, when someone loses "面子", it often triggers extreme protective behaviors to prevent disgrace or loss of honor. To protect the Chinese singers' "面子", the show took a preemptive action. When you sign up to be a judge, they ask you about your "favorite singer" in the competition. You can see where this is going, right? During the finals, if most of the judges are fans of Chinese singers like Na Ying, the results become pretty predictable. The show can confidently claim there's no rigging, that it's all the judges' decisions. (Holy BS.) Sorry, "saving 面子" is an inherent trait of us Chinese people, and in a dictatorial society, it manifests in a rather alarming manner.
