I'm so glad you did this song. I'd never heard of it and clicked on it just for hoots. I've since spent the last hour and a half falling in love with this song, listening to lots of versions here on RUclips, reading Wikipedia about Ewan MacColl. It always amazes me when I discover something that's been out there as long as I have (the song and I were both born in 1949) and I don't discover it until I'm 71. Thank you, Mike.
Wow, Jim. That is terrific! I’m so glad I could get someone interested in a song. It’s an amazing tune and the Ewan MacColl story is interesting. Have fun with it!!!
By the way, did you know that Ewan MacColl's daughter Kirsty sang on the Pogues' Christmas classic Fairytale of New York. Sadly though, she died at a young age.
I love this song, and the way you do it, but it isn't Irish. It was written by Ewan MacColl about his home town of Salford, near where I grew up in the north of England.
Good work! I liked how you sang over the chords, I feel it really helps to hear where the lyrics fit with the chords. It would be good if you done more of it. Very helpful for beginners. 👍
Thanks mate. I’d love to, but there are too many other channels that do traditional mandolin tunes. I want to keep my channel to pop/rock songs. Having said that, the Dropkick Murphys are on my list.
@@RockPopMandolin any chance you can point me to what channels teach these things? I can find alot of covers on youtube but no lessons Alot of websites only give tabs for the opening of songs not the entirety of them Thanks
This is a great video, i can do all the picking easily, but damn i struggle with the easy bit, the strumming, i cant for the life of me get the same sound as you, do you start on an up stroke? i cant work out whats going off....thanks for the video
Hey mate. Thanks for watching. Not sure which part you are asking about though. Do you mean strumming the main chords? I start those with a downstroke. I'd suggest practicing with a metronome. That will help. Cheers!
Thank you, Mike! Been really enjoying these videos :) Any chance you could teach Old Town Road? (Billy Ray Cyrus and Lil Nas) Also... do you have a paypal or something so I can donate to your cause?
NOT an Irish song. Nothing to do with the Irish. Written by Ewan McColl who was English by birth. He wrote it about his birth town of Salford, a city in England.
Beautifully rendered, great work! Would love to get the kind of tone you get out of my instrument some day.
Oh, thanks for your kind words! Just keep playing... tone will come!!

Hi, great video! Do you have a tab for this?
Thanks mate. No, I don’t do tabs. Rarely use them, myself.
Sorry if you've answered this in another video but: what model Loar is that?
It's the Loar LM-520-VS. Lovely little instrument. I've haven't played many better... even much more expensive Gibsons.
Both parents Scottish living in Salford so that makes him a jock.

Written by Ewan McColl.
Yup! Kirsty MacColl’s father.
@@RockPopMandolin Yep, real name Jimmy Miller, it's not Irish it's about his home town Salford, near Manchester England.

Yes, thanks. Many people have pointed that out.
Parents were Scottish , from whom he got his musical influences from. 🏴🏴🏴🏴
Wish I could play an instrument even half as good as this I would be happy...just to thick.
Oh, thanks so much! But it just takes practice. You can do it!!
Try the Triangle ☺
3 key changes 😫
Don’t worry. The patterns are similar across all three keys.
@@RockPopMandolin , cool melody, transposing the harmonica part is awesome
70snut Todd Thanks, bro. It’s one of my favourite tunes to play on mando.
