At front & centre of debates about animal & plant breeding technologies, we need to focus on human nutrition & get an agreed definition of what constitutes 'proper food'. Proper food promotes human health, increases biodiversity, helps address global warming issues & many other beneficial aspects of ecological/human well being because it is intrinsically linked to all of these. Get food right and many of these other issues fall into line. Clearly the evolution of breeding efforts, modern farming techniques, processing, distribution, marketing and retailing has contributed to a highly efficient industrialised process ensuring a plentiful supply of commodities sold as 'food'. However this has come at a price which we are now witnessing as human health catastrophe in which poor dietary choices play a central role in obesity, diabetes, heart disease, some cancers, mental health etc. The way we grow food, how it is processed & marketed plays a pivotal role in this and if we aren't addressing these issues to, for instance, tackle the unfolding tragedy that is ultra processed food, we are are making a grave error
