    thank you for sharing this awesome video. years ago i bought my first persian to breed, a gorgeous blue persian, the next year my brother took me to a cat show in the same city. we were walking through the isles & saw my cat! of coarse it wasn't her but it was her father, it was so exciting to see how identical they were, while all of her kittens were just as beautiful as she was none of them looked exactly like her & her father. thanks for bringing that experience back to me.

      Hi Crystaline thank you for sharing your story! It was so moving, my heart jumped when you found her father.

      Persians come in such a tremendous variety of colors and patterns that not having kittens that look like Mom would not be a surprise. I'm sure that dedicated Persian breeders know about Persian coat color genetics but there I'm going to have to plead ignorant.

      @@marysanders9461 i was not talking of color, all of her kittens where what they call blue, just like her & her father. i was a dedicated breeder educated in cat genetics & understood colors. i had buyers coming from many states away to come apply for my kittens. one has to have several kittens of the same color to know what i am talking about. have you ever seen a family of humans look as if they were all of the same mold? each one's nose is a bit different from the others as well as the eyes, ears, chin, etc but you know they also all look alike. when i was 15-16 i found a picture in our closet of myself & some girl sitting on the back of a donkey & asked my mom why i couldn't remember who the girl was or when i was on a donkey, it turned out it was her at 16 not me & the other girl was one of my aunts, i looked identical to my mom at that age. genetics can carry certain genes onto the offspring but not all of them.

    A bit of movie trivia: "Stella by Starlight" was originally an instrumental theme for Ray Milland's love interest Stella Meredith (played by Gail Russell) in the 1944 movie The Uninvited. The hauntingly beautiful love theme became so popular that lyrics were added and the song was covered by various artists of the time.

    I found my Chatreux for free. Purebred. I was walking home from a café, heard a tiny voice. Looked under a parked car, ~5 in morning. She was playing with a dirty scrap of paper. She wouldn't come to me (she has always known her own mind) for 10 minutes. When she let me pick her up, I carried her in my left hand against my chest. I named her Hermione Winthrop. I Introduced her to Charlie, who became her big sister & best friend. She's sleeping in her bedroom now.

    I love cat shows! I have a cat, Reebie, who made royalty in one show weekend. She absolutely hated the shows, and showed no sign of getting used to it, so we retired her. Peekaboo loved shows, being picked up and carried around. We always brought him, even though he only placed in the teens a few times in his life. What a sweet-looking, beautiful breed, the Lykoi. I was given a partially haired Sphynx by an amateur breeder who couldn’t place him. I would hate to think of something like that happening to him! Veterinarians would ask me if his hair was always patchy, and I would explain. He was the sweetest clingy boy. ❤

    I loved how much attention the Somali and Chartreux breeds got; I've had both. They were both retired show cats that we were happy to adopt. My Somali was a different color (CFA recognizes 4 colors, the beauty in the video is a Ruddy but there are also Cinnamon (formerly Red), Blue, and Fawn). My much-missed Max still has pictures from his show career online, look up Mittsnpaws Miromax. His brilliant red color really shows in the pictures; even in his frail old age his color stayed so bright that the people where I live now, who were only used to seeing orange tabbies, remarked on his color. He was attached to me at the hip for the whole 13 years I had him; miss him every day.

      oh wow I looked up Mittsnpaws Miromax and he's on the breed council website! - www.somalibc.org/nw.shtml
      He is beautiful! Thank you for sharing. How did you get to know about the Somali and Chartreux breeds? They are so rare! It took me several cat shows to see them

    • @marysanders9461
      @marysanders9461 Год назад +1

      Finding the Chartreux was my half-French husband's doing after we had already acquired the retired sable Burmese breeding queen (absolute witch that tormented the other 2 for a long time; I'll never have another one) we started with, then Max. We lived near Cincinnati at the time (he still does in a house we own there; long, unhappy story); while we were at a cat show in Dayton looking at a Burmese I wandered away a bit, only to see a Ruddy Somali in the very next show cage; one look and I was hooked!! I found out later that they come in the other colors; somehow my husband (we bought him for ourselves as a wedding gift; we were married on Wednesday and took Max home the following Saturday) found Max online. As a neuter he was sort of surplus; his breeder/owners had him altered before they knew what they had. We went to pick him up at a show out of town; the minute he came sauntering out of that show cage our eyes met and that was that for the next 13 years.

    • @TheCatButler
      @TheCatButler  Год назад

      oh my what a lovely story about Max! Match made in heaven. Thank you for sharing. Somalis definitely one of the most beautiful breeds I have ever seen.

    • @marysanders9461
      @marysanders9461 Год назад +1

      The Chartreux was one LeCompagnon Valiant, who was a near-perfect retired double-grand show cat that we were fortunate enough to find only about 2 hours away in Columbus. He had horrible dental issues so over the years we had him he had to have more and more teeth removed to control that infection but we eventually got it whipped. He also ended up hyperthyroid, but he was very good about taking his daily pill in a Greenies pill pocket for my husband (doubt if he would have done it for me; he was very much my husband's cat).

    • @marysanders9461
      @marysanders9461 Год назад +1

      After we got Val once when I ran into Max's breeder at another show I mentioned that we had gotten him. She said "I know that cat!", leading me to believe that they had completed against each other in Premiership classes at prior shows, given that they were almost the same age.

It will take lots of baby steps for her to come out of her comfort zone. I guess I have to give it a shot. By the way, I really think the somali cat is gorgeous!

    LOL, as a Ragdoll owner, a breed I chose in part for their super fluffy and soft fur, I don’t think I could ever adopt one of those Warewolf cats. I love when my big male ragdoll, who is still only 10 months old, comes and flops down on my chest. Its unlike anything i have ever felt. As they purr loudly and rub their giant large apple or small grapefruit sized head all over your face with their beautiful soft fur is so warm and pleasing to the touch! They like to snuggle and get bully rubs like a big ole bear or something. Ragdolls are the best! And that’s coming from someone who owned Balinese cats all their life! 😊

    The Chartreux was very much my half-French husband's cat. He was also a retired show cat that won titles both before (Grand Champion) and after (Grand Premier) he was neutered. He was a quiet (they very seldom meow; I really couldn't hear him purr but my husband insisted that he could), conservative Frenchman whose ancestors were brought back from the Middle East by the Crusaders. He and my husband were very tight; he would come to me for attention every once in awhile.

    What a great time at the cat show in San Diego!! Thanks for the link to the CFA cat shows. As part of doing my research before getting a cat, I went to the one in Louisville, KY last October. It is a small show. No rescues there. You couldn't really talk with the breeders. One of the handouts indicated that the public shouldn't engage the breeders as they were busy preparing their cats to show. I didn't know this until close to the end of my time there. I couldn't figure out why people were so unfriendly. The only person who would talk with me was a woman who was showing a few cats as pets. Anyway, I left somewhat unenthused. Totally different from the dog shows I used to go to in the same city. I see that there is a show in the city where I now live. I will give that one a try this summer. Thanks again for your channel - you have 2 beautiful cats😺.

Had some great conversations with a few judges.. Should have interviewed one! So if its close to you you can check it out!

    That was a really interesting video - thanks for sharing your visit! I’ve never been to a cat show, and while on the one hand I’d love to see so many different cats, I know it’s really not my jam! Mostly for sensory overload reasons with so many people and conversations all happening at once in that kind of big open echoey space… but also because I feel so bad for the cats when they’re in those little cages, or sometimes when they’re being handled by some of the judges. And also just imagining how they must feel so overwhelmed with so many people and other cats in such a big space etc! I mean, that’s totally how I feel so I might just be projecting my feelings onto them 😂
    My neighbour has an Abyssinian cat named Miso, but he’s more of a greyish brown colour than the gorgeous red and red-brownish Abys and Somalis here! Those Somalis are so gorgeous 😻 I looked after Miso for the weekend at short notice last year, and while I had met him a couple of times before and he seemed fine and friendly, OH BOY had he changed his tune 😅 I guess because I smelled of my own cats, but he got VERY territorially defensive and tried not to let me into his flat to feed him, and was hissing and growling and the whole works! I’ve never had a cat react to me like that before (my other neighbours’ Ragdolls who I look after quite often don’t care that I go and see them smelling like two Maine Coons 😹… thankfully my two don’t mind too much when I come home smelling of two Ragdolls either! 😆), and while it was initially a bit of a shock and had me worried about how I was going to look after him, it quickly became very funny to me (and thankfully to his owner later on when I sent her the videos! 🤣) - he would also alternate hissing at me and giving me all this attitude with rubbing his head against my hand, then rinse, repeat! For the subsequent meals I did my best to wear clean clothes that my cats hadn’t been too close to, thoroughly washed my hands etc, and also went armed with a pocket full of treats - bribery eventually worked! He was basically a demon for the first 3 meals, but by the 4th he decided I was actually alright, and was immediately pleased to see me and full of purrs! Definitely the weirdest cat I’ve ever encountered 😸

    • @marysanders9461
      @marysanders9461 Год назад

      I've seen pictures of Abys and Somalis that were that sort of sepia color with a dull beige undercoat, but as long as the ticking is black or near to it they're a Ruddy. The show standards now call for that sort of rust-colored undercoat with black ticking and facial markings like the Ruddy in the video. As much as I loved and bragged on Max with his brilliant red (now Cinnamon; their ticking is light brown and be kind of hard to see, especially on a younger cat) a good Blue is incredibly beautiful--a dilution of Ruddy with a peach-colored undercoat and blue ticking. There is also Fawn, which is dilute Red/Cinnamon--basically 2 shades of beige. If you want to look, the website for Front Range cattery in Colorado has pictures of several gorgeous dilutes on there.

      you get them used to the noise, confusion, the PA system, being handled by judges etc by starting them at 4 months of age as a kitten. They really don't mind, it is kind of a chance for them to be alone for a week-end with "mom" or "dad". they look unhappy sometimes because their naps are being disturbed lol.

    I hope you are doing well. How are Teemo and Arya? Forgive me if I misplaced their names.
    You have been so amazing, and I have learned so much.
    Tonight, I told Ollie time to brush teeth. He hopped up on the table on command, then he sat and let me brush his teeth. He pointed his nose to the sky and was so good. He even came to the kitchen for his after teeth brushing treats.
    Also, I have been taking him to the stream by our house every morning, and this past week, he has been playing IN the water! I'm so proud of him.
    We walk every day, and sometimes I hold him, and other times, he walks with his camouflage vest that has a military look.

      Most of Max's behavior was not typical Somali. He got hauled all over the country to get that National Win; that plus getting the idea that he had been subjected to some rough grooming left him traumatized. Add to that our Burmese would try to attack him every chance she got for the first 10 months we had him; we had to rotate them between different rooms for quite a while. When we got tired of the rotation we started having them out at the same time but he would disappear (smallish one level house so not too many places for him for him to hide). Looked everywhere for him one day then remembered something about Somalis opening cabinet doors; found him under the kitchen sink "Is that any way for a National Winner to act?" He eventually figured out that he was bigger, stronger, and had a much longer reach, so he started smacking her back and shortly they became fast friends. She died unexpectedly less than 2 years later; which to me was a relief. Anyway, Max could be very clingy and definitely had marked separation anxiety; he would not sit in my lap but would sit or lie down as close to me as he could, even on my pillow at night. After Angyl, who was anything but-- she would harass Val in subtle little ways but sometimes they would get into screeching, fur flying, full-on fights that she would start and he would finish. When we were ready to look into getting another cat about 3 months after Angyl died I had already discovered the beauty and history of the Turkish Angora, but that's another story.

    • @marysanders9461

      Depends on the cat. The ones with the "showiest" personalities who also cooperate with the judges' handling tend to do the best. My Max would even strut his stuff at the vet's office, like once out of the carrier or show cage and it's Go Time.
