Dude, this thing looks like it's perfect for me. I spent a lot of time trying to find that material, but it's not as straightforward as you would think. I visited your website and found your link to the Canadian eBay site. Thank you for making this video, and thank you for that link.
They are selling this setup for $1900-$2300 @ reflect media! Thank you so much for this tutorial! My son is so excited to try this. We ordered the fabric and hopefully we can find the LED setup to test it! Thank you again!! Awesome video!
Watched this video a couple months ago while researching a chroma key solution for my VERY small room. Decided to go for it, wait for the bits and pieces to arrive all the way down to Central America and this works great. Thanks for sharing, hope you're doing fine!
Wow! Let me hit the thumbs up 5-6-7 times! This is awesome. I have been wanting to do green screen for some time now but I did not have the room. Thanks for sharing!
I recreated this setup with an RPi Zero W with the new HQ camera module, the same backdrop, and a RGBW neopixel ring (sizes 12L and 16L). The results in OBS are pretty amazing. I having started creating content yet, but things are progressing nicely.
Pretty cool. The new HQ Camera module looks much better than the previous versions, and the interchangeable lens option is a plus. Good luck with your projects and thank you for watching!
Thinking the same thing. I was surprised that I didn't see a green reflection off any reflective surfaces ie. your watch. I look forward to your follow up.
Hey... Thanks for sharing. do you have a parts list or place to go to buy the parts to make the screen? if you have a video on making/build/installing one of these in your studio I'd love to watch that too!
My doubt here is, how is the LED green light from the Camera reflect on only background when it is flashing overall from Camera. In this case his t-shirt and everything on video should look green
How do you keep yourself from looking green? All your colors look fine. I would think there would be issues on your shirt or skin from the green light.
This is just brilliant. I used to a Da-Lite High Power screen (2.8 gain) for my LED projector to compansate the weak brightness. But this is just cool. It seems like you're using a Sony RX 100 camera in this video? I suppose you don't still have the correc 3d model ring laying around, or do you? Could come in handy. :)
Im just guessing but I think its the same phenomenon that those reflective suits show.. when you see that glaring light from those stipes.. but the person looks normal
I'm trying to find a suitable way of widening from 1 meter to two meters. Will be trying fusible tape, liquid adhesive, etc. Did you try any of these methods Yvan? Also, what is your setup for keying? Jim
Hi Jim, since I use magnets to hold the fabric, I've made a test by adding another 1 meter piece below the first one by overlapping the top one over the bottom one by about two inches and it showed up as one piece in post without any visible seams. That fabric is pretty fragile so try to not touch the reflective surface too much. I guess using some double sided tape might work as well. For keying I now use FCPX with the Hawaiki Keyer 4.1. Hope that helps and thank you for watching.
I recently purchased about 20 yards of reflective fabric from an online store called fabricempire.com and installed it into my music studio in my basement. I didn't use magnets...rather...push-pins to tack it onto the drywall. :-) I decided to go with a single-point green light that was DMX controlled (ADJ Dotz Par) and I am having a ton of trouble with shadows cast from the subjects. It's hard to imagine there's no affordable green LED ring light already on the market, so I may just have to take your route and build my own DMX-Arduino-controlled LED ring-light. :-) Thanks for getting me pointed in this direction.
Thanks so much for sharing this information. I was just wondering what the name of the reflective fabric is that you purchased from the website because there are so many different colors and types to buy. Thanks again.
Awesome idea! I wear glasses all the time - can't wear contacts. Will the green lights reflect off my glasses and show up in video since the LEDs are by the lens? If so, can you suggest a work-around that doesn't involve taking my glasses off? Thx :)
That's a good question, I don't have a definitive answer but the LEDs aren't very bright at a distance so they might not show up in your glasses. If you ever give it a go, let me know how it turns out. Thanks for watching!
Super !! Merci !
This is fantastic. Do you think the led light need to be so close to the camera lens? I was going to get a larger LED light and put it around an in line teleprompter, not sure if it would work though.
Just curious to know that what if we are using this setup and want to illuminate the subject ( person or the object ) up front too with warm or white light. How the final footage will come out green or not ?
That is awesome. I was trying to do this about 20 years ago, but I could not find a source of anything but narrow strips unless I ordered right from 3M, and their minimum was 7 giant rolls to an order. Go eBay!
Since the retroreflective fabric used reflects the light directly towards where it came from, it's important that the LED's are close to the lens. But they can be placed in front of the lens as long as they don't show up in the capture. Hope that makes sense :). Good luck and thank you for watching!
How did you mount the lights to your lens? Did you 3D-print a bayonet or filter mount or use something else? I'd like to find a bayonet lens hood replacement to mount these on, but can't find anything like that. Would a huge step-up ring work?
@@BrainybitsCanada Thanks for the help with the Arduino program! The only problem I have now is that I can't get the LED's to stay solid Green. For some reason they all keep flickering and won't stay solid Green. I have the same LED Rings as you, but will not stop flickering. Any ideas why this is happening? Thanks again for all your help!
@@BrainybitsCanada Hi, thank you for the great video. I have one question though regarding the material you have used as a background. Is it a retro-reflected fabric or just a reflected fabric? On the link you provided it says it is a “silver reflected fabric”. I am only asking because the reflected fabrics are cheaper and easier to find than the retro-reflected ones. Thank you in advance for your time and thank you again for the excellent video.
No thanks for they reply. I found the reflective textile, but it is 100 cm x 50 cm too small for my necessities, the person i spoke with from their sale department told me to look for a screen projector or fabric for screen projector. What do you 🤔 think? It is cheaper and much larger www.amazon.com.mx/dp/B07RR8WTFM/?coliid=I3K1HQ26S8OLH1&colid=24DTD9GH9C24S&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it
Thanks for this the reply and this video. I tried getting the regular green screen to work but you're 100% right on the proximity problem for close quarters video. Because it's so close any wrinkles or waves in the fabric make keying out the background a nightmare. I'm trying to source a supplier for the reflective fabric but all I can find is 1m x 1m squares unless waiting for something from a China warehouse. I think I may try and sew or glue them together to see if it will work hopefully the seems don't show up. Either way it can't be as bad as keying out 7 different shades of green.
I got the RetroReflective fabric from this seller on ebay: goo.gl/e9yft1 He's in Canada but he does ship Worldwide. I will release a followup video tomorrow or Saturday testing with white clothes and will also test what happens if you have seams. Stay tuned!
The green light go everywhere, but the reflexion on the screen is return the green light in the same direction that came from, so multiply many times this value compare of the 180 degree on the t-shirt
Sometimes I wish I could triple like a video!!! 👍👍👍
Wow. And I was just about to buy a green screen. Looks like you have changed my mind! Thank you for sharing this!!

No shadows! So cool!
Cool idea.
Is there a problem with the ring illuminating your clothes in the key colour (for example if you are wearing white)?
Thats a great question. I will try it and post a quick video of the results. Stay tuned! Thanks for watching and your question.
Agreed. That's a good question. I look forward to the results of trying different clothes. Some jumpers have speckles woven in so could be good or bad.

Thanks. This is new but will try it.
Hey 👋 Can you use any LED ring?
great solution, but am I missing something? How is it that the leds don't illuminate you green too and only the reflective fabric behind you?
Im just guessing but I think its the same phenomenon that those reflective suits show.. when you see that glaring light from those stipes.. but the person looks normal
If you made a larger ring with more green LED lights around the camera, would that allow you to do full body shots with green screen?
Ultra, super, OMG, fantastic, great, genius! Wow!
how is it that the subject is not also lit up green if the cam light is green?
Ya, would be great if you listed some resources in the video notes for people to click on!

Does the Ebay seller even sell sewing thread that can be keyed out?

you should use it just as a color changing backgroud for your videos (edit the code a bit)
Good idea, I might do that once in a while, the color created by this system is so uniform that it looks pretty good on it's own. Thanks for watching!
Brainy-Bits No, I mean that you make a code that changes the color of the leds so the background changes color without any cgi.

Is there a reflective paint that has the same quality and color that can be used? Is this usable for a cyclorama type setup?
Can you light this from behind instead? Or does the reflective material work only on one side?
The fabric is like a projector screen, so it can only be used from one side. Thanks for watching.
Is the reflective fabric the same as the 3M reflective fabric ?
How important is it to have the LED lights close to the camera lens? I ask partly because I use a teleprompter. Thanks!
