    Really appreciate this deep dive into the crosshair overlay debate. It’s refreshing to see a balanced view that doesn’t just jump to conclusions but rather explores the nuances of customization vs. unfair advantage. The distinction between accessibility tools and potential cheating software is crucial. Your approach, urging for kindness and constructive conversation within the community, is exactly what’s needed. Looking forward to seeing how this evolves, especially with the devs' response. Thanks for shedding light on this!

    Using a 3rd party crosshair should be considered cheating. If you struggle with recoil just say so 🤷‍♂️

    • @Appoh
      @Appoh  11 месяцев назад +1

      I mean if you struggle with recoil I can't imagine a crosshair overlay is going to help you. I also don't know many games that ban crosshair overlays, like crosshair x is allowed in the majority of popular fps games and is allowed by EAC because it doesn't affect the games files at all. It also works with xbox game bar which is microsoft. I personally never found much of a difference with or without an overlay but I do really miss my yellow dot from valorant or my white cross from csgo, they just felt right

    • @ShinyaTheNinja
      @ShinyaTheNinja 11 месяцев назад +2

      @@Appoh the finals don't have actually recoil. Its different compare to games like valorant or csgo. The finals relies on visual recoil. Meaning no matter what your bullet will shoot center of your screen. The reason why it's hard to shoot is because the guns move.
      But If you use a third party crosshair you don't have to worry about visual recoil just always aim where your cross hair is and it will always hit no matter what.
      You can't compare other games like val or csgo. They have built in crossbars for a reason while the finals doesn't.

    • @ShawkR6
      @ShawkR6 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@Appoh I understand that but if you're using a weapon like the LH1 or AK there's a lot of visual recoil. Players will enable a 3rd party crosshair to be in the middle of their screen the entire time. When you have this advantage you're able to always keep your target centered on your screen even through the visual recoil of those guns. So imo it's a form of cheating. Maybe not as bad as esp or aimbot but still an advantage. As far as I know you can change your crosshair in game. There's no reason to use a 3rd party crosshair that stays in the middle of your screen at all times to help alleviate visual recoil. Crosshairs like this we're never used in Siege where I came from as there wasn't a need. But it seems players in this game are trying to make it seem as if it's normal to use a crosshair like this. Professional players in other games are not using 3rd party software like this. The players I've talked to or heard using a 3rd party crosshair have said that it's to reduce the visual recoil and stay in target easier, which id consider an unfair advantage. The guns have a lot of visual recoil as well as iron sights for a reason

    • @Appoh
      @Appoh  11 месяцев назад

      i think the main issue lies in the fact bullets dont go where your weapon is aiming and the customization is lackluster here vs other games which is why it's more common here. I also would never blame my death or failure on the fact the enemy has a crosshair overlay. I see the argument and I'm not here to say that it is or isnt an unfair advantage. I'm just here to show some official statements, the terms of service and leave it at that, i don't want to confuse anyone with throwing in my opinions on whether it should or shouldnt be considered one way or another. also crosshair overlays are built into monitors now, so it's pretty accessible to everyone, i'm curious where the stance is on that. not every monitor has it but not every monitor is 240hz + so if we dont allow that overlay should we be locking the game to 60hz to match the consoles? I mean the debate of what is and isnt unfair feels too subjective which is why the developers have the final say and i'll trust them to make the decision they find is the best for the game.@@ShawkR6

      @@ShinyaTheNinja i agree, im mainly comparing it for the customization aspect and the allowance of overlays in various games. The reasoning in this game is different which is why it becomes a very tricky topic because it seems like a potential mistake in the game that people are trying to fix, realistically id like to see the recoil just fixed in the game so the need for an overlay is gone. It wpuld certainly help on boarding players who dont fully understand the concept yet. Its really something people need to just let the devs handle and for now we only have the tos as an official statement but its obviously a grey area for people. Lets hope for more clarity in the future and for fair play across the board

  • @leoncca
    @leoncca 11 месяцев назад +20

    I think there was a poor etiquette from Ottr. Instead of talking to the guy and correcting his honest mistake, he tried to profit out of it. Ideally I would like them to talk it out, it's really not late for it. Personally, as a programmer, it was pretty obvious to me since beta that, unless you're using a crosshair overlay that injects code directly into the game, instead of being another window on top or whatever, the anti-cheat is simply not gonna be targeting it because it's not gonna have an heuristic to handle it. I recommend using an overlay that works within the xbox overlay as Embark is never going to ban the xbox app as it comes by default on Windows. Always bother to check if your overlay injects code!!!

      i have developed cheats for both unprotected and protected games and i can say that 99% of the time,anticheats never trigger on a external crosshair.Even if the anticheat is searching directly for its hash or its name, that can be bypassed just by randomisation. A crosshair overlay is nothing more than a simple transparent window, position always on top. it dosen't interfere with the game by modifying memory or opening a handle so the anti-cheat will have no reason to proc on i

  • @tropictiger2387

    The thing about crosshair overlays, is that they are very easy to make. You just divide the width and height of your monitor, draw something on screen and make sure your program draws in front of other programs. It does not make sense for embark to try and go after every application that does this, they are too easy to make. You can always just put a sticker in the middle of your screen if you really want to. Some monitors even have built-in crosshairs as a feature.
    This is a dumb non-drama, Embark couldn't stop you from having a crosshair even if they wanted to. The stuff that will get you banned is stuff that does more than draw pixels on your screen, it would have to be something that interferes with the game in some way.

    • @Appoh
      @Appoh  11 месяцев назад +1

      i think this point is really important, it seems so simple to make your own crosshair which at that point would be a peripheral so im not sure how that can be detected, it seems silly to have this drama but i think its the wording and mistakes made in terms of delivering information that lead us here

  • @SanguineNightsTV
    @SanguineNightsTV 11 месяцев назад +2

    Interesting. Little did I know they considered a crosshair overlay cheating but have remained ambiguous on whether it's bannable. Especially when the in game one is so poor.
    Honestly, the in game one is a very large trigger for my adhd. I truly struggle focusing on the center of my screen with that massive blocky interactive crosshair moving around acting as a constant distraction. Hell, I can't even have the announcers on as their incessant dialogue triggers my ADHD and disrupts my mental process. Something as simple as a static and small crosshair that's not intrusive goes a long way for someone like me and is a basic feature of almost every fps. And just having no crosshair while someone who can make do with whatever is unfair and ultimately just telling someone like myself that I'm destined to struggle harder compared to my peers because it's what the devs at Embark intended.
    Personally, I see these overlays as more of an accessibility feature and shouldn't be bannable but knowing most game companies, their response is a polite way of saying "You just rolled bad genetics, not our problem. Next time just be born with S-Tier genetics."

    There is more about crosshair overlays. If you run games in fullscreen mode, most crosshair overlays which support that, have to be injected into the rendering. From what i know this has always been triggered as malicious behavior by any anti cheat software. There have been user reports of using e.g. crosshairx with the finals resulted in a ban, though crosshairx uses an "official" method for injecting into the rendering via the gamebar feature of windows. On the other side, if you run games in borderless window mode, which nowadays can provide the same experience regarding latency, crosshair apps don't have to inject into the rendering and therefore cannot be misused as an advanced cheating engine. It's a technical approach regarding the discussion but imho a very important one.

    • @Appoh
      @Appoh  11 месяцев назад

      good points, I use fullscreen on every game and have ran crosshair x and seen nothing being flagged so I'm im guessing there is a misuse and proper use of specific programs

      I think we need to just wait for the developers to clarify, it very well could be but thats up to interpretation. Using headphones instead of speakers is an advantage, a 300hz monitor over a 60hz is an advantage. Using discord to communicate with your team is an unfair advantage when facing a solo q team. Its such a vague term that is left to interpretation and that is why its lead to so much confusion, i always suggest to follow the terms of service and if ur unsure to clarification from the developers before moving forward. There is accessibility options and there is cheating, it's not the same my friend...
    I'm a braindead and can't get kills so i want the accessibility option of sitting on top of the crane and spinbot killing everyone in 1 second. That's my way of feelig included, so fk everybody else. Is that your argument Appoh? There are accessibility settings in game settings menu, but instead of advocating for devs to add more accessibility options there, you want to add whatever add on garbage. This is not the municipal theatre that is required to have wheelchair accessible entrance.
    There are limits and online cheating is just too prevalent so i think it's fair to let the 0.01% with disabilities feel unwelcome if their accomodation allows the flood of extra cheaters that wouldn't be there otherwise. There are tons of single player games and non competitive online games that disabled people can have fun... It doesn't have to be a competitive shooter.
    Olympics have segmented tournaments. Men, Women, Men with disabilities, Women with disabilities.... What you DON'T see on the olympics is disabled people on a motorcycle running the 100m dash against Usain Bolt... That would be stupid and you know it would be stupid, but here you are making this argument for Online Gaming.
    Do you think i took it too far with that analogy? Maybe, but perhaps like call of duty has a single player campaign without anticheat and multiplayer .exe somewhat protected with anticheat, maybe we should have it same way on the finals. One exe for Ranked and one for everything else. Would you feel happy that way? Because i think competitive integrity is at the core of gaming...

If this isn't a competitive environment, then sure, i'd call that accessibility. Since it's a multiplayer PvP game, i'll stick to calling it cheating.

      @@Appoh @Appoh weak arguments not gonna lie.
      Yes 500Hz is vastly better than 60Hz, but the issue there is where you put the standard experience line. I think 120fps120Hz is the baseline.
      Does this make 10 year old monitors and PCs not suitable for this game, sure. It is what it is.
      And you debating monitor crosshairs. It's like debating that your car can run 200kph so you should regardless of the speed limit.
      If the game feels an fps limit should be in game to make it fair to 60Hz users surely they'll put it. If the game feels a static dot crosshair would be fair for the game they ll add it as an option in the game.
      You know what isn't cheating as it stands right now? Aderall... By all means, go ham. But at least you ll grab the mouse and the mouse inputs will be yours not an aimbot, your crosshair placement will be yours not the analogy of support wheels for bicycles for babies.

    Custom crosshairs are an obvious advantage. With the poor in game ones having a more consistent cross hair w/ out visual recoil and being more precise gives you an advantage so I think these softwares are and should banable bc it improves the poor original crosshairs. Although I do want to see a world where we can make our own crosshairs in game so we don’t have these issues(like valorant)!!!!!

    It’s good of you to be honest about being friends with gravitydrop, but this is still pretty blatantly biased. Ottr going out of his way to make gravity look bad obviously sucks, and honestly turned me off of his videos but downplaying gravity’s mistake helps no one either. If you have such a big platform in such a small community, and that platform is based on dispelling myths, you really need to check the information you’re spreading. Especially when it’s misinformation that can get people banned but could have easily been verified with a quick google search and a dash of common sense

      I personally don't see the biased part, I only stated facts, showed proof, evidence, i even said gravity made a mistake, let alone one he very quickly fixed and clarified to his community, and on the video itself with a comment. Everyone makes mistakes, I've made like 2 different mistakes in my videos giving wrong information, 1 about m60 dmg, 1 about goo hp, and I always try to correct my mistakes when I learn, we're all doing our best here but you can't expect someone who works full time and then does youtube on the side getting a lack of sleep trying to create content to make a flawless video every time. It's the human element we all have and need to respect

      @@Appoh first off, you did a really good job of breaking down embark’s policies, and I agree with the points you were making.
      I should rephrase, it’s not “pretty biased” I meant more it’s pretty obvious that you’re a LITTLE biased and honestly it’s understandable. When it comes down to it, what Ottr did was a conscious action with bad intentions, probably to discredit gravity. Whereas gravity made a simple mistake, and most of the community understands that and that’s why we side with gravity. I just think accountability on both ends is important, and content creators should be a bit more cognizant of what they post.
      The only reason this case irks me so bad is because anyone who’s ever played an fps on steam knows just how finicky anti-cheat can get, so implying third party software is not only allowed but encouraged feels like telling kids to go play in traffic.

    1:59 "The community moderators do say that it is bannable but don't seem to mention exactly what programs are being referred to".
    What are you smoking my man? How are they not mentioning it exactly?
    It's literally in your video "which also include crosshairs".
    It's pretty damn clear that they consider third party overlays that could give an advantage as cheating, WHICH WOULD ALSO INCLUDE CROSSHAIRS. Their words, not mine.
    We are not the people that decide whether or not a piece of software gives an unfair advantage or not. If the moderators explicitly mentioned that overlays such as CROSSHAIRS would be considered as cheating, going on to deliriously explain that you could have a crosshair that aims for you, or that highlights enemies, as if the post at 1:59 could ever even refer to that is ridiculous and completely pointless.
    I agree, and weirdly you seem to also agree, that Embark has not made any clear statements about whether or not custom crosshairs are allowed or not. But it's clear that the thing closest to official information about crosshairs EXPLICITLY is the post at 1:59, which EXPLICITLY includes crosshairs. Not "some crosshairs", not "crosshairs that highlight enemies or aim for you". Just "also include crosshairs".
    Going on to make a video in which you say that Embark has "encouraged third party software" in relation to crosshairs is abhorently irresponsible.
    I understand that the person that made the original video is your friend, and it might be difficult to see through that bias and look at the actual situation, but for fuck's sake, saying that the developers encourage the usage of third party crosshairs, when you had to make a 9 minute video to explain the murkiness around this issue, and the uncertainty we have about whether or not they are allowed is ridiculous, and irresponsible.
    I don't get what was so extremely offensive and rude in the callout ottr made. He said that "saying this is encouraged is really weird" and "it's insane to say that developers are encouraging it when your entire video channel is about dispelling myths, not spreading them". Both claims with which you agreed.
    I might add, the fact that the video is still up, and still spreading that piece of misinformation, while only a comment has been added to clarify the situation, and the fact that GravityDrop even doubled down (1:22) on his claim that custom crosshairs are allowed by Embark.
    The responsible thing to do is to take the video down and reupload it with a correction, because most people who look at that video will not see the comment correcting that claim.
    To conclude, we are not here to argue what is an unfair advantage, or to interpret a vague ToS and come out with a conclusion on our own about what is allowed and what isn't. We are only here to rightfully correct the misinformation that is being spread about the developers "encouraging" the usage of certain crosshair software, which is a gross misinterpretation of the truth.
    I for one believe that software crosshairs should be allowed, and that based on my reading of the ToS, they would be allowed, but I would never in a million years say that Embark has acknowledged and encouraged the usage of sofware crosshairs, because doing that would be wildly irresponsible, and could get people banned.
    All arguments about whether using a crosshair software is fair or not, or about whether people were banned or not are moot. We are not talking about fairness, or about whether you will 100% get banned now, we are talking about the position Embark has taken to this issue. The claim is wrong because of what it said about Embark's position, not because sofware crosshairs are or are not fair.
    Until Embark makes an official statement, every content creator should avoid making such claims, and strive to correct them after the fact, instead of doubling down.

      You’ve written a dialogue for his video…your first issue is addressed with appoh answering which crosshairs would most likely be considered to be banned since the experience of knowing it’s being used plentiful by people in a non cheating way and haven’t been banned and those that have been for aim bot n walls n all dat have been, n that statement came from a bot brother n you’ve even stated it until embark truly states it there’s no true overall clarification but the clarification we know of for now is you won’t get banned. That’s the whole premise and ottr claimed that gravity was someone who’s going to get you banned? As appoh said they could have and should have discussed it if they felt this wrong about it to help the community but didn’t. It’s a misuse of a word that’s causing discredit towards what gravity is trying to actually do

      thats why i put all the info in my video, it's all there theres nothing to hide, also a CM does not represent everything that embark stands for, thats like saying a retail workers word is always right about the company they are working for, there are terms of service for a reason, the issue is that it is a grey area, it isn't very clear and there have been mixed signals even the developers implying that crosshairs are allowed because they are aware the tos doesnt mention it and state they will change tos if they need to. we all want clarity and thats why my video simply states facts and why I said to simply refer to TOS if you are questioning what you can and cant use, along with saying we should wait for Embark to make an official statement.
      Also of course i'm going to discuss the topic because gravity is my boy, I still took an unbiased approach
