Alternatively, maybe he thought they might spare his men if he didn't. He just doesn't strike me as the type to give his life on just the chance of saving his men, I feel like he'd have more of an Ahab personality about Dutch.
This is one of the scenes that make me hate Sadie. While I can perfectly understand her anger, her grief, being unable to control herself just turns this mission into another shoot and run. I wish it involved a bit more stealth and subtlety.
