      I've seen a number of people post very good vids like this one over the years but they always seem to disappear shortly after they get posted. Hopefully this one (& more) will slip past the censors & remain posted for all to see!!!

    I’m a diesel tech. at Kenworth, 80% of trucks come to the shop with emissions problems

      I drive an 18 579 and the only issues I have with it are wiring harness issues. Never had a mechanical issue. That, and Peterbilt is the slowest pack of vultures when it comes to repair time. 50,000 miles and it sat at Youngstown peterbilt for 11 weeks for a harness. Said they didn't have any extra, had to be made. I asked if they would make my truck payment s til it was fixed, no dice. Then, for some reason I was told to leave. Must of been my vocabulary. It also sat there for 3 weeks after it was repaired cause I wouldn't go back cause they did demand I leave earlier. 😁

    I totally agree. I sold my DD15 4 years ago because of admission problems with DEF system. I was at the time doing time sensitive OS. Last straw was in Chicago for one for Boeing. Paying great but load has to be at the port within a week n half. No problem untill the DEF system detected "maybe" a problem. It shut my truck down. Not only did I lose a week worth of work, that load, plus repair bill that did nothing. I also had to pay for relay recovery to get that load going. The truck didn't even have 100,000 mile it yet... freightliner did nothing. I lost close to 10,000 that week. That was it I sold the truck and all my equipment. You can't continually take losses like that unless your a mega carrier. Still sadden me as I was the last of 4 generations of drivers. I do believe this was plain to kill out little guys just like in other industries

      In a way I hated to "like" your comment, that really Sucks man. Yea, how's an owner/operator supposed to take hits like that? It could be such a great job but these after-treatment systems are taking an already challenging career...and making it impossible.

      You mean if a sensor reports certain problems the motor will just shutdown, even if it is a fringe issue that can wait a few days? That sounds criminal to me.

    Reliable? What do you mean? These engines are totally reliable! You can totally rely on the fact that it will have DEF issues that cost big money to repair! lol...

      @@MrTheHillfolk It does, and it can kill your motor... Best bet, if you buy by the gallon, get it at Walmart, buy the house brand or cheapest you can find. Odds are it is fresher than the high dollar brands like Peak. Dust on the box? More than likely it is bad.

    Right on, Dave. I’ve said this repeatedly in the chats, I’m hanging on to my 2005 Volvo VNL 780 with a 565 Horse Cummins ISX for this very reason. It was cheaper to replace my original engine (a 530 Horse ISX), replace my Eaton-Fuller 13 speed tranny, and I just replaced both of my differentials last month. Sure, they were expensive, but I didn’t have to replace them all at once. It was all still WAY cheaper than buying a brand new truck with all of these headaches included in the purchase price! No thanks!

      Ranchers are getting less for a head of beef as the packing houses are making record profits. There are only 4 companies that process 90 percent of the beef.
      As an "interesting" side note, at least several of them are heavily invested in fake vegy burgers 🤔😡

    ZERO idling. Run a cetane booster so the fuel burns cleaner. More frequent oil changes to control soot. Preventive maintenance is a must. Still doesn’t mean something won’t/can’t go wrong. Old trucks are better but the emissions are not going away.

      @@labourlawact7826 saving from what? Anything we do as humans doesn't have nearly the impact that natural things do. How much CO2 is put out by volcanos when they erupt? They are trying to kill us off is what it is. Plants need CO2 and put out O2, we need O2 and give off CO2.

      @@Nightsider-xr5lx co2 is currently a little over 400ppm, planet wide death event level starts at 150ppm and that is where carbon capture will take us. As co2 levels have gone up the planet has gotten greener (NASA report), greenhouses will typically increase co2 to 1200ppm and nuclear subs upper limit is 8,000ppm. And data actually shows co2 levels follow temperatures.

      These guys buy old company trucks that have been used and abused and wonder why they have problems. I run a day cab and stick to 15k for oil changes, and always PM on something.

    I just got put into a 2022 579 peterbilt. Not even 1,000 miles on it before it went into the shop.

      I've had lots of new trucks and practically all of them went to the shop with low miles. Even old emission shit from the 80s and 90s. Gotta work the bugs out. If it happens a couple more times before it gets to 200,000, get out of it. Oh, and drive it like ya stole it.

    This is why I've never owned a truck newer than 99 and why I went back to running my 86 W900 with a custom B Model. Reliable and easy to maintain and repair.

    2015 DD15 with 800,000 miles. I've changed 2 NOX sensors and injectors. Never left me stranded. Still runs like a dream. Maybe I got lucky, maybe I take great care of it, maybe both. The key is to buy an APU and not idle them. Idling kills these trucks.

      So true brother, so true. In these newer trucks idling will kill them. However I'm still a company driver and depending on the weather outside I'm gonna idle that damn truck if I need heat or a.c. LoL 🤣😂😁. My boss dont wanna put an APU in my truck but he has to pay the repairs, not me. So my attitude is "oh well". Now when I get my own truck and be an owner opp then that will be a whole different story. Making sure I purchase an APU the same day I drive off the lot with my truck. Also I will have a good personal diesel mechanic on deck for my PMs and repairs and I will get a good fuel account as well. A lot of drivers dont know that cheap fuel like Loves may offer the cheapest price for a fuel account but using Loves fuel over a period of time will leave ur engine and tanks dirty and junky which may cause for some repairs needed in the future. Pilot/Flying J and TA/Petro may charge more for a fuel account but the quality of their fuel is better than Loves and some rinky dink truck stop with junky shitty fuel that will most likely clog something over time. U gotta love ur truck and always be willing to throw money into ur truck on a regular basis to be a successful owner opp. All the guys I seen that failed at it where either too cheap to do what needed to be done to keep there truck rolling on a regular basis or they were living ABOVE there means in their personal life outside of work and therefore could not manage their truck well financially. But the guys who are absolutely obsessed with there truck never seem to fail. Some of them literally "will" their way to keep the wheels turning. When I see or talk to guys like that (including yourself) it motivates me to really believe I can do this owner opp thing myself and make it work. May not be easy all the time, but I can make it work and become a better trucker in the process. I'm at least gonna try. If it fails I still got my CDL and can always go back to being a company driver.

      Exactly! An APU is a must have. Yes it's an extra expense but it will pay off in the long run. The best 12k I ever spent. These dealers tell you everything but the important things like you can't idea these trucks like the old emissions engines. I've also discovered most don't like to be ran over 1600 rpms. It causes to much blow by and clogs up those filters. You can make a living with they but you have to be will to educate yourself and a lot of drivers I know just simply refuse to do the homework. It's mind-boggling

      @@garymoore3384 I’m one of those obsessive owner operators. I have an old truck and I baby it mechanically as well as polish and detail it constantly. For a 2005, it looks and runs great! Plus, no DEF! Also, I just bought a brand new Carrier Comfort Pro APU just last week. My old APU finally died but it more than paid for itself as well as this new one too.

    My dad always put it like this about modern vehicles: "how many of these will still be running in 10 years time?".
    And another thing are that there are very few real mechanics out there. Most, especially if you go to a brand mechanic like Volvo, just plug their computer in to see what part need to be replaced, and think no further than that.

      My pop had a 88 freightliner cabover that he shut down in 08.. 2 months ago me and my brother changed all the fluids and put some hot batteries in it..fired up like it was fresh off the line..gotta love tho old engines

      It's little electronic heart probably won't make it 50 years sitting in a barn when it's unearthed after we are gone.
      Barn finds are gonna die out once they start becoming newer then the late 90s.

      Exactly, they aren't mechanics, they aren't even technicians. They are meat machines capable of reading a check engine light and telling them what sensor/part to change. "The check engine light is not on, idk what to do. Bring it back when the check engine light is on."

      Still running my old Western Star with a 6NZ Cat. Runs hard all day. Million miles or more between rebuilds. A lot of these new engines hardly get 250,000 miles and need rebuilding. Cummins just offer crate engines now, yank the old one out and throw it away, jam in the new one.

      2019 Volvo VNR with knuckle boom crain. Not really any problems with engine per say, it's been more the dog system. Ryder had to rewire/reroute the harness for the dpf sensor early last year (wires were rubbing on the fenders) and now waiting a sensor that's on back order for everybody. Heat went out at the start of winter and that just got fixed (both bunk heaters worked just no heat from dash). Also had abnormal wear on the first set steers on all 8 them as well. A couple of them had to have pressure sensors replaced for the PTO for the cranes as well as pressure hoses that have blown. Had some other little things with the crains as well.

    This is why I just love the old school trucks. I remember my uncle putting hundreds of thousands of miles on his Mack and it only ever required it's regular maintanance. back in the day you could make a stack of cash driving.

    Hate to say it Dave, but you are right. This new emissions trucks have lost the confidence of the owner/operators, and they want to fix and run the older trucks!! Their cheaper and a hell of a lot more reliable. And what I don't understand is why the Federal government rushed through these emission mandates without testing it. Why was the Federal government so hot to trot for these new engines. It was stupid to force this stuff down our throats.

      Follow the money, in 2014 the filter and catalyst for a 320 Pete cost 35,000. The manufacturers of this crap lobbied to get the law passed, just like the trash companies lobbied to get the recycling passed, it's gravy money, or at least it was when it first started.

    Ive been enjoying your insights and thought what the heck time to comment. Personally I'll just keep running my 83 Pete with her nice reliable 15 speed eaton, she's got 4 million on her second block and original tranny case and rear end housings, I do all the wrenching I can and have an assume Detroit dealer I've worked with for years. In the end she's paid for and to me that's all that matters, keep the greasy side down and safe travels!

    I work for a smaller outfit. My truck went down and my boss got me a 2021 Freightliner Cascadia rental with only 20,000 miles on it to finish the week out. Didn't make it 300 miles and the A/C stopped working, ABS, and TCS lights came on, it started to give a coolant level low alarm when the coolant wasn't low and wouldn't stay running. That truck, new, is almost 100k$. What a shame.

    So true video. We run new trucks, but all deleted.
    All this is even more true for off highway trucking, apart from the financial burden, it's dangerous. Ice road would be great example.

      Gotta get caught first but yes it's illegal to do deletes. Even for our personal pickups now it's illegal. I have a 99 F250 with 7.3l just I don't have to deal with the emissions systems on my personal vehicle.

    Nearly every problem I've seen in them has been an electronic sensor problem. The mandate that the truck cripple Itself for any minor bug is the real killer. Strip the kill switch programs and remove everything after the turbo and the Epa might have been right.

      Could a new engine be "deleted" and swapped to a pre-emissions era truck? I guess it would take a genius to make the new engine function without the emissions equipment unless you used dummy sensors that always returned "ok" for any ECU test case. I assume the new engines have made some progress and that without DPF, EGR and the other emissions add-ons they might be more reliable than the classic engines. There must be some progress in the new engines.

    I have an 07 International 9400i with a Cat C15. I got lucky because the truck came with an 06 engine. The only emissions BS I have is an EGR. But so far at 1.35m miles, no rebuild, still running strong.

    As a farmer I know very little about trucks but I do know something about tractors. Twenty two hundred for the computer to control the engine. Two thousand dollar computer to control the hydraulics, six hundred for a new wiring harness that can stand the heat. Emissions sensor for another 2 grand. It's gotten so bad I decided to rent my ground and not take the risk of more computer crap failure that only dealer can fix at 125 per hour plus milage.

    Thats funny I have a 2015 kenworth mx 13 with 489k. I drive the piss out of it an idle also. If you do the maintenance you won't have trouble. Ive been in this almost 40 years . Fuel is profit. As a matter of fact ive ordered a new kw 680 for next year an will be keeping this one.

      I agree. Run the piss out of them from day one and the only issue I had is who got my truck when I got another new one. Drivers were lined up wanting whatever I got out of. Ya baby it, it will never run right. On time services too

    Newer engines that are around 14.8 liters displacement or larger are speced with ring gears that are numerically higher than they should be for running highway miles and keeping emissions traps clean.

    I’m just a farmer that hauls my own grain to the Mississippi River. I was wanting to upgrade my 21 year old binder for something around 5 years old. My mechanic said keep what you got. It’s a better truck than what I could find today. Now I have 2 farm tractors and a combine that use DEF and they have never caused a problem yet. But I keep hearing that you have to run a DEF engine under a load all the time and that’s easily done with the big farm equipment.

    I think this also apply on light trucks, both diesel and gas.
    Just a small example on my Chevy 454 engine, mine is gen V TBI, probably the most weak gen of 454, but TBI system is simple, reliable and easy to diagnose.
    But then the gen VI 454, the Vortec 7400, with OBD-II, multi-point fuel injection. Just one thing, ignition base timing, I have to get a Snap-On or Tech scanner to do the timing. WTF?

    You have a interesting channel and enjoy watching it from time to time.
    I love my 02 Volvo, one of the best trucks I ever driven. At the end of the year it will have about 1.8m on the engine with out any rebuilds and it's a day cab. Lol I put about a million miles on it myself and it's tired and wore out and it just keeps going. I do a lot of 4 wheeling and haul 80-88k six days a week. Very impressed with the ol girl. If something does break and it has we can fix it on the side of the road or limp it back to our yard. These newer trucks seems like one sensor goes out and the truck wants to quit.

    Where a O/O usually buy their trucks and keep them for the long haul.
    Mega carriers lease them until the warranty expires and swaps them out for new warrantied ones.

    Ive been driving 27yrs now. The most reliable truck fuel efficient truck ive had was a 1998 IHC with a N14 CELECT 470/515 10 speed 370 rears 11r225 rubber. And an airsheild I got 6.6 mpg at 72 mph all the time. The 2020 T880 day cab
    With a 450 ISX 10 speed and 336 rears on 11r225 im getting 5.5 mpg
    The 99 IHC day cab wet kit truck i pull a 40 ft tri axle dump with it. Got 5.5 to 6 mpg with NO AERODYNAMICS. But it had a black top N14 10 speed and 370 rears.
    I run intermodal about 60 % of my freight is heavy 20s on 40 ft triaxles.

    I know a few guys that have had thousands to 10s of thousands in engine repairs and down time. Todays trucks you run them till the warranty runs out and get rid of them, you're in perpetual debt. You look at used trucks for sale every emission engine truck has had a rebuilt engine the junk engines can't make it past 500,000kms without a rebuild.

    Company driver here, last year I was given a 2022 kenworth T680 and after 140k miles it’s been in the shop for emissions issues and a fuel rail. Close to $45k in repairs total over the last year. I wanted to be an owner op but after seeing that it changed my mind quickly. If I did do it, I would buy a pre-emissions truck. The EPA has to go

      It wont give you warnings. It can derate in middle of the road. Then you're on the hook to nearest shop and then might scramble for parts which are thousands of $$$

    Like it or not, it will get to the point that if your truck does not have an emissions engine you won't be allowed to drive it. Fines will be set at levels which will make having a non emissions engine totally prohibitive.

    I was talking to a Detroit rep in 2009 and he said that they were expecting life of the engine to be cut in at least half and loose at least 2 miles to the gallon. I think they were optimistic.

    Going on 500,000 miles on my paccar mx13 only been in the shop once for a radiator and once to get the dpf filter baked at 250k per preventative maintenance guidelines in the manual. Will be getting a new dpf filter for $4000 soon. Been driving since 2013 my first truck had a 3406e that thing put me on the shoulder and in the shop reliably. I’ve driven a 2010 with a Mercedes engine ran like a top the guy driving that truck now just put 1 million miles on it and it’s still going. I’ve always driven newer emissions trucks and never had a problem with them

    Thats why i buy pre 2000 trucks only. Just bought a first for me. Always a Cat fan. I bought a 1998 N14 cumapart. 550 hp in a dare i say plastic volvo. Well looking for a classic freightliner with a 3406b.

    I've been retired for five years now so maybe my inputs might not be relevant , but I got out of the owner/op game when the new emissions engines came out because I didn't believe the manufactures had been given enough lead time to do the engineering necessary to design the engines properly. It seems they were using older engines and adding more crap on to them which destroyed all the positives of the old engine developed over years of steady improvement. Cat saw this and said no to chasing their own tails for the next 20 years because they knew meeting the standards required a whole new approach to diesel engine design and I don't think anyone will disagree with the fact that diesel is very hard to make burn clean. If I find a way , I'll let you know.

    DPF systems cause additional expenses. After 250k miles DPF full. Derate 25%, went to TA filters cleaned. Truck 5+ years old. Once they cleaned it replaced leaking DOC ($2600 aftermarket of $4200 dealer) . Once everything back together. 8 fault codes,. To make the long story short a week in shops lost revenue, and a $5k expense. With lost revenue you're looking at $10k+ expense every two years.

    I was talking to a LandStar office gal the other day, and she told me that over 90% of the drivers that left LS were not able to keep these EPA motors running... She also asked me to suggest a good carrier to lease on to... She worked for LS. And that 90% number, her words, not mine. I know how to own and operate an EPA motor, it was a costly learning curve, but now I know. I carry my own computer and diagnostic tools on the truck. New world folks, EPA at your own risk, unless you want to learn how to be a mechanic.

    My truck until a girl texting took me out in 2014... 1991 International with a 120" Double Eagle bunk. The engine... an old "B" model mechanical CAT. Yeah but... you couldn't run Kommiefornia. Yeah but, I wouldn't have if I could have. Been there, done that... wasn't really interested in going back. Oh and, as long as you knew how to drive it, it didn't put out any more smoke than the modern engines shifting. If you see tons of black smoke while shifting, it's because the driver WANTS it. He thinks it's kool. And fuel economy??? At 78,000 pounds running 70-75 MPH in the mid-west, it got 6.5-6.75 MPG @ 1350 RPM's (13 speed). Try getting that out of a newer EPA engine. Maybe with lighter loads... and much slower speeds. A friend with a 770 Volvo was down to 5 MPG trying to keep up with me. The best thing.. the only "electronics" on the engine was a fuel solenoid. Turn the key on, fuel solenoid energized... turn the key off, solenoid cut the fuel supply. The same 770 Volvo had something like 13 different CPU's, and my friend had constant issues with the electronics. Everything (except the add-on cruise control) on mine was mechanical... engine, speedometer, HVAC.. everything.

    Working for Advantage Transportation, I blew up three DD-15 motors. All digital info said I was innocent.
    They sold three low mileage trucks for scrap because it cost more to repair than the low-mileage Cascadias were worth.......
    Price of a two year old Cascadia, minus motor, eighteen thousand bucks.

    T800. ISX. Has 3 oil pressure sensors. If one goes, truck shuts down. Oil pressure fine. WTF !

    Engine itself isn't a junk... its the electronics that fail more often than you'd want. One sensor after another fails on my 2019 cascadia. It worked fine in the first two years, then the sensors and the wiring harness connecting to the sensors go bad. Expect your 2019 to be in the shop once a month.

    I want nuthin from the new engines, glider kit was my choice which ended my runs to California which oh well I immediately said ok thats fine and I made great money going out there but was willing to take my lick lol, come to find out I make just as great staying away from that state lol

    I got 500,000 on a paccar and have never had a mechanical issue yet. Too damn bad Peterbilt don't know how to make wiring harnesses or promptly replace one. Worst issue I've had is the dealerships.

    Mine's an 89 FLA-086. Little 285hp Cummins big cam, 9 spd overdrive, 3.90 drive's 136"wb. Paid off, and I run 55 to 60 max. Slow, and steady wins the race.

    Hell I'm driving a 2017 cascadia and for a week now the dash says ats elect system problem and a low voltage issue with the system and its running no derate surprisingly but I hate def and everything to do to it

    Yea I’ve been in forced medical retirement since 2007! After a strong wind blew me off the 12’ dump body while topping my load, luckily I landed in mud and only blew out 3disks, needed an L4/5 fusion. But still the last 20 of my 45 years in trucks was on Martha’s Vineyard, driving for a local freight company a few years and on an excavation crew, hauling earth, sewer systems and heavy equipment used for it. The last time on the mainland driving daily, was as a regional driver for Regency, a N.E., Mass based company in the lower 48, up to 1996. I was out there the night the DOT changed all the 55 mph signs over to 65-? That was the last great night driving! Then it seems like the creeper cops/dot had a hair up the behinds, and started looking ever more closely at all of US! Almost as bad as the beginning of the CDL debacle! That sent me scurrying over the road in my 4 wheeler into a 1,000 miles round trip to 3 states, to get equipment violations cleared up, that employers never closed out! Just to pass CDL muster! I saw the writing on the wall! That sent me to the island to work in a truck still. Now I’m enjoying my retirement on SS, in a home we paid for in cash after selling the home we built, but intimately taxed out of in paradise after my severe back injury, in Central Florida, in an amazing 55+ Community. Cruising in my hopped up LSV Cart, going from pool to pool, of which there are 14 to choose from, 6 jacuzzis, 2 gymnasiums and anything else! So a hardy good luck have fun and stay safe and healthy to ya!

    Owner operator trucking has not been lucrative for decades. My dad did it for years and he died broke. An owner operator cannot get the same fleet discounts for fuel, insurance, maintenance, and even purchasing a new truck. Large trucking companies have fleet discounts on fuel and maintenance, even fleet insurance policies that come with huge discounts because they buy everything in bulk. Even when buying new tractors and trailers, they order several hundred at a time. They probably get a 20-30% discount all the way around. There is no way an owner operator can compete with that! I have been seeing a lot of natural gas rigs running in California lately, I am curious about the operating costs for those.

    The current truck I drive has been perfectly fine 2019 Volvo vnl 760. All 410,000 kilometers so far not even as single DEF problem. Average 7.5-8MPG. Although I'm a company driver so it does not matter. But some of our other def trucks are total garbage. I think it's just hit or miss to be honest.

    Most of these problems can be fixed by using the Max Mileage Fuel Borne Catalyst from Pittsburgh Power, and you can also have Pittsburgh Power tune them as well.
    There's lots that can be done to these new engines to make them more reliable.

    15,000 for tractor, another 50-ish for new everything.
    65 grand and I have a new truck.
    Depending on specs, new Fruitliner 160-- 200 grand.
    This particular tractor has never left me on foot!

    Never had a problem with the 16 I drive 700k on the clock had the first set of dpf filters at 630k. I cracked fitting on the back of the def tank because it was filled up and it cracked at -30.Run the hell out of it, dont idle and they are fine. Never left me on the side of the road.

    Some data points to evaluate...
    Since March I have been driving a Schneider Freightliner Cascadia manufactured in January 2016. It currently has 467901 miles on it, of which I've put 20916. The info screen says I've used 2740 gallons of fuel during those 20916 miles. Don't know whether that's good or bad so I'll leave that evaluation to those with more experience. The only service I've had on the truck since taking it over (knock on wood) is a failed turn signal relay and a burned out headlight. Some additional points:
    Schneider is all auto transmission and purchases the best MPG-version of the Detroit Diesel instead of the best horsepower-version. Additionally the truck is governed at 65 mph.

      @@kenbowser5622 I get around 8 mpg in the flatlands, but my dispatchers delight in ping pinging me over the Appalachian mountain range. I've become very friendly with Fancy Gap pass in Southern Virginia. Climbed it today as a matter of fact at 45 mph.

    The EPA is not the problem, they have been around for 50 years now. The engine manufacturers prefer having truckers pay hefty repair bills (i.e. massive profit) instead of coming up with tech that is reliable and better for the environment, which by now I'm convinced they could do if they had the incentive.
