I have owned the Aries G2 and can assure you it does sound even better than the two you mention. The Grimm Audio MU1 I now use in my setup 1 is even twice the price of the Aries and again produces a better sound quality using the same Chord DAVE DAC. So it’s more a financial consideration than a matter of sound quality improvement.

Good to hear the theoretical improvements on the G1 translate to audible benefits. The audible changes you describe sound quite objective and convincing. The G2 seems to be a total package, and in about the same price class as the competition (Innuos, NAD, Cambridge Audio, Naim, Linn etc). As usual, I can't help thinking whether could one achieve that for cheaper, though. For instance, the PSU seems ordinary (at least not at Syntaxx level), the digital part could be replaced by an old PC + PSU. Or by a shielded streamer with Ethernet input from a NAS. One could use a plywood base and copper shielding which IMHO should be at least as good and doable at home. One could even order a machine milled case as well. The added value seem to be mainly the audio interfaces + clocks and the software. I'd be interested in a subjective evaluation against e.g. your Elac Discovery powered by a Syntaxx, fed by Ethernet from a NAS, via coaxial SPDIF and a DAC of your choice. Or an Innuos Zen/Zenith Mk3. :)
I think you have a rather simplified view on this topic. The Syntaxx PSU is extremely good, but there is more to it than just the PSU and some components....
Right, PSU is one factor (though important). But there is no magic, either, so we should be able to quantify the components and design choices (low EMI, grounding, components choice, circuit design etc) that contribute most to the audible benefits. I guess you'd leave that to manufacturers to figure out, though your comparative evaluations do also help DIYers who'd like to bisect the reasons behind audible benefits. :)

There are no noob questions (well, almost no😁). You can access the 2nd internal DSD (when present), an external DSD or any other storage medium connected to USB and/or network shares on a computer or NAS.
Dear Hans Many thanks for your videos. I am interested in a video about attaching a DAC by USB and how big the noise on a digital output (I use an imac) has to be in order to create a mistake, so 1 is interpreted as 0 or 0 is interpreted as 1. Maybe also cover CRC, is the error detected and if yes, what happens upon detection? Can the error be automatically corrected or does the DAC request the data a second time? Love this channel so much good information. I'm considering the Auralic Aries G2 for my Chord Hugo TT2. I don't want multiroom so don't want Roon. Using the android or apple apps is what I'm looking at but the reviews are bad. Does anyone have any recent experience and can comment. My intended use is for a dedicated headphone listening set up using locally stored files plus Tidal, Qobuz and Spotify.
There is no app for android, only for iOS. Roon is more than just multiroom. Privately I use it for it's user interface and the way it gives access to my music catalog, Tidal en Qobuz.
Wonderful reviews. Thank. I'm currently storing music on a Melco N1 and steaming Tidal using Roon on a Nucleus into a Meridian 218, then G68 and DSPs, but want to dump Roon, Nucleus and the N1. Sound quality is paramount. Would the Zenith Mk3 or the Auralic Aries G2 replace the Nucleus and the N1, and maybe the 218? Would they give better sound?
Hans, excellent review. How would you compare this to your recent review of the Cambridge NQ Edge? Also when using Roon, will the album information be viewed in the G2?
No player can increase the audio quality of an audio file. Apple uses AAC which is better than MP# but less than lossless (WAV/FLAC/ALAC). But it can reproduce the files with less loss than an inferior system. Depending on what you use now it might certainly sound better.
@@klewja Those are great choices, but in a much higher price range. Do you find an external clock is essential, or just another accessory upgrade ? The dCs DACs are known for very extended bass, among other qualities.
I never tried an external clock with the Bartok. I put chased that when the first came out so it was in the same price range as the Dave. I know that dCS really pushes external clocks. With MSB they have a very different design philosophy. They place their clock as close as they can to the actual Dac modules. They also already make some of the most accurate clocks in the world so I don’t feel there is a need for an external clock. I do want to add the digital director down the road though.

I plan to buy an Aries G2.1. I have two questions. First, I understand I can Install an SSD. Can it be installed internally? (I am thinking 4TB, Auralic offers only 2TB). Second, at present I have a server/streamer (Wyred 4 Sound MS1 with the i7 package and 2 TB SSD). That server/streamer is acting as a Roon Core and streams to itself. I would like to use ROON with the Aries. How can I do it in this situation?
You can mount an SSD in the G2 internally and I suppose the same goes for the G2.1. You can then play music from that SSD and from the W4S server using the Auralic Lightning software. Using Roon on the W4S server is also possible. You then activate the Aries G2.1 in the Audio menu of Roon as endpoint. To play music from the SSD in the Aries G2.1 you define it as a storage medium in the Storage menu in Settings in Roon.
Thanks for your kind help. If I discard the server I am using and decide not to use Roon anymore, can I transfer my favorites to the Auralic using its OS?

Dear Hans, I am planning to buy an Auralic G2.1. As an old owner of one of them, I would like to ask you if you noticed any sound quality difference in your system by streaming music with Roon Rock on a dedicated computer (this is how I have been doing that until now) or directly through the Lightning DS app. If you were so kind as to reply to this query it would be much appreciated.
Hi Hans, will G2 makes a lot difference in sound quality comparing with G1? Price wise it is a huge difference. I don't really know which one to go for. Never own a streamer before.
I can''t say Huw much the difference would be for you, not knowing you nor your stereo and acoustics. For me the Aries G2 sounds so much better that I consider it to be worth the money. But then again, 'being worth the money' isn't a fixed reference. I am considering buying an Auralic Vega G1. However, when I research reviews of the "Lighting DS Control App" several iPhone users have complained recently that the app is crashing frequently and is unusable (perhaps due to changes in Apple OS). It has also been reported that tech support at Aurlaic can only advise owners to search forums for a solution. Can anyone confirm this is a real issue?
Hans - thank you so much for these informative videos. I am trying to sort-out whether a Roon Nucleus, ZenithMK3, Auralic Aries G2.1, or Aurender ASC10 is the right hardware for my use case. I realize you cannot address all of our questions directly, but I do think it would be interesting to create a flow-chart of sorts that would help those of us about to enter the streaming world to make a good decision. In my case I feel that decision seems to begin with a choice regarding Roon. Do you want to run Roon Core or are you comfortable with a given manufacturer’s proprietary software? If committed to Roon, what functionality (if any?) is compromised by using a Nucleus vs. say an Innuos product, and which offers the absolute best sound quality? (Why does Nucleus not deploy a linear power supply and does it matter?). Thank you again for your very informative videos and I will now go back to “Listening to the Music”.
The Roon Nucleus should only be used as a server so you need a network player like the Auralic Aries G2.1 too obtain quality. The Zenith combines the server and play out function and I have not reviewed the Aurender so I can't comment on it.
Fine review. However the trouble with Auralic is the terrible sales for me in Germany. They couldn't even get one for test listening. And I was looking at a vega, aries and sirius all together. Nothing from them in weeks. Terrible. But I learnt later at high end show (various dropouts at the booths presenting g2) and other retailers (from hearing) that the lightning is very unstable. By all respect, this is not a device to recommend.
Thank you for another great review. I have two questions: how do you compare the G2 to the cocktail Audio particularly the higher levels such as the 50 and 50 pro? Secondly would not the Auralic Vega 2 be a better choice to get since you get also a good dac in the one package?

Both can be extremely good sounding if you spend enough money.
Dear Hans,
I am planning to buy an Auralic G2.1.
Auralic says their own system sounds better, I found Lightning and Roon sounded equally. BTW I owned an Aries G2.
@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel Thank you very much for your reply, Hans.
👍🏻
Hi Hans, will G2 makes a lot difference in sound quality comparing with G1? Price wise it is a huge difference. I don't really know which one to go for. Never own a streamer before.
Yes it will, quite clearly even, provided your stereo has the capability to make it audible. Why else would I have bought the G2 in stead of the G1?
@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel thank you for your reply, I didn't aware you brought the G2 :-)
How much better does this sound than a sms 200 ultra with a botw new version power supply?
I can''t say Huw much the difference would be for you, not knowing you nor your stereo and acoustics. For me the Aries G2 sounds so much better that I consider it to be worth the money. But then again, 'being worth the money' isn't a fixed reference. Really affluent people might consider the price difference insignificant while really poor people willl find even buying the sMS-200 Ultra completely idiotic.
@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel well I have a very high end 25k system. Is it seriously that much better? You have replaced your sms 200 ultra? I got the ultra from your original recs
@@ClassifiedBrief I have a $40k system and the G2 is incredible in it. I have magico S1MKII and hegel currently with the G2 feeding a Chord Hugo TT2. This is an incredible combo.
@@klewja welp I guess I'll have to put it on the upgrade list and sell my sms 200 ultra. Love that thing tho!
Dear Hans, QQ please. My DAC is 18bit input limited (Audio Note UK). Would an Aries G2 be compatible i.e. can it export at 16 bit at non truncated CD quality as eg a Grimm cannot.
I don't know and since I no linger own one, I can't check either. I would ask the question at the Auralic forum.
@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel Will do, thanks Hans.
As always, great content Hans, thank you so much! I've ordered a G2 myself and should receive it later this week. The big questions that I have in mind now is, wifi or ethernet connection? On the other side, I have a nucleus and I was planning to buy the SOtM switch. But I keep on hearing and reading of people who are perfectly happy about their wifi connection... I bet you have tested the different setups and have come to some conclusion? I'd be happy to hear your view.
Thanks!!!
Working on it....
@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel Great! I'm also purchasing the G2 and was almost ready to go full fibre with eR and oM, but Auralic points towards wifi with the G2. What to do...
Works fine on my iPad, otherwise I would have reported it.
@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel Thank you for your response.
Did you get a chance to review the Vega G2.1 DAC? Thanks.
No, not yet
@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel thank you Hans. I will rewatch your Videos on both the Zenith and the Aries!
is this Auralic Aries G2 a good combination with the Denafrips Terminator?
I don’t have hands on experience with the Denafrips but my guess is it will combine greatly.
The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel Hans what is the DAC that u connect this Aries G2 to?
Mytek Brooklyn Bridge. See the link in the comments for my equipment.
Auralic Aries G2 with the Mola Mola Tambaqui DAC : magic !!!
What dac did you use ? Won't that affect the sound ?
I always use my reference DACs. See my video.
I have not reviewed the Cocktail Audio model’s you mention nor the Vega so I can’t say.
Hans I have bought one but clean usb has major connectivity problems with few dacs I have used it keeps disconnecting with error messages please any help or word of advice greatly appreciated thanks
I have not seen any problem with the DAC's that I have reviewed since I bought the Aries G2. I would contact Auralic about this.
@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel Thank you very much for the fast reply, in your experience is coax connection a big SQ down grade? Thanks
No, all outputs of the Aries II are of the same extremely high quality. But the inputs on your DAC might perform differently.
@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel thank you very much for the info
@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel Hans I have brand new Lampizator Amber 3 Dac with new upgraded USB board which is JLSounds VIII, USB flash 396 and Dac board type 53. Just wondering if you have any knowledge about this, but thank you again 👍
