I think as someone who graduated hs in the irvine area, if you are just moving into irvine probably looking at northwood would be the best option because it is an established school with lots of new people moving into the area. School is constantly compared to university high school and is in I would say a quieter part of town. University is great but the facility itself is older and isn't really as close to parts of town outside of uci. Alternatives would be Beckman High (My alma mater) which is near northwood so there are a lot of same demographics as well it is in TUSD (Which isn't a bad thing). Irvine high/Woodbridge is where a lot of older families are because the neighborhoods built there were established first. This isn't to say a bad thing its just something to look out for (IHS has a world class swimming facility maintained by the city not the school). Portola high I really can't say because it was established before my time but it is in the great park area where the Irvine Company has been investing in a lot of resources. Only thing I would say about it is that it is kinda out of the way from where other irvine kids like to hang out. (All the other schools can be found along culver so a lot of plazas are around that area as well as public parks.
