I’m a houseman in my second posting. The best way to describe the job is like being a slave, or worse, like a dog. If your bosses throw you a bone and command you to pick it up, you have to do it, or they’ll make your life so difficult it’s nearly impossible to continue your job. Dealing with malignant people is arduous. It’s hard to focus on work when you’re constantly resisting the urge to st*b them in the eye with the pen in your pocket, imagining ways to m*rder them and get away with it, or even c*rsing them to death. Disclaimer: I am just being very transparent with my thoughts; there was a time when I was very close to doing something stupid. I do not promote violence by any means, and yes, it was THAT bad. Based on what I’ve seen in real life, there are only three ways to have a decent life during housemanship with minimal to no toxicity: 1. Have a parent with high social status (Tan Sri, or at least a Dato) 2. Have a parent in a high position within the system (like being the Deputy Director of the hospital or higher) 3. Get a spouse who can fulfill either 1 or 2, or both If you have any of these three, people will treat you differently. Trust me. This job has severely affected me both mentally and physically. I suffer from chronic headaches, frequently use painkillers due to stress and exhaustion, and have developed gastritis. I feel like I’ve single-handedly supported the entire painkiller and Gaviscon industry. It’s hard when my father thinks I’m just a young guy who can’t handle stress, believing that other HOs are enjoying their work and it’s just me who can’t handle it because I couldn’t "change" my mindset. Once, I complained to my father about having to starve during lunchtime because of work and tasks from my bosses. His brilliant suggestion was to tell my bosses, "Wait, let me have my lunch first." What. a. brilliant. idea. As an Asian, I’ve always been fed the idea that if you don’t work hard when you’re young, you will suffer in the future. Sometimes I can’t help but think, is all the hardship I’m going through just part of the process or challenge I have to face before "success" shows up at my door? Even if it is, will my body and mind crumble before that happens? I worked part-time at another company after graduating from medical school before joining this hellhole. The job paid well, I had a great work-life balance, and the bosses were great, reasonable, and most importantly had REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS. I was happiest during that period of my life. I didn’t miss school life even a little bit. Working life was great. Now, it’s the complete opposite-I’d much rather be a student. Sometimes I wonder if all my thoughts of quitting are just me being weak, unable to handle stress, not considering the potential "good future" I could have/my mom wanted, and only caring about personal enjoyment in the moment. Being a medical student was fun and life was great. That’s why I cringe every time I see medical student vloggers showing how stressed they are in school. There’s definitely worse to come; brace yourselves, brothers and sisters. So, I think people’s goal in life should be to find a job that makes them not miss school. Perhaps our parents say being a student is better because they haven’t found a job they really enjoy. To all HOs: you're not alone in this inferno To all medical students: please brace yourselves/change career before it's too late To all aspiring-to-be-doctor college grads: NO To all aspiring-to-be-doctor highschool students: Trust me, being a tiktoker/influencer is better To all parents with children < 12yo that fills in "Doctor" in their ambition column: React exactly the same as if your child telling you that they wanna be an Onlyf*ns model. Ok ciao.
@@royrockerfeller I'm happy for your friends honestly. I'm doing well in HOship too tbh. But anyone were ever given the chance to have some connections, they'd definitely go for it as it help eliminate a lot of toxicity, which is a major part of the job that makes it stressful other than the heavy workload. Not trying to say having connections is the only way to survive, just saying It's REALLY REALLY REALLY nice to have cuz it really bring a shit ton of benefits. Haha.
My summary of our country's housemanship system is it is a modern slavery. In my opinion, a job is a job doesn't matter which industry you are in. This is not charity. People work to pay bills and that's it. The goodwill we did while doing the job is the bonus we give from our part. No one should force us to do things that we don't wanna do. Period!
Hey Christal, Nydelene here. Just wanted to say, I cried watching your video because I resonate with how draining housemanship has been. Some days I feel like I've become the devil, feeling burnout, losing compassion and passion. The work is inhuman especially the tagging hours/weeks. and you are right, it takes more courage for someone to decide to quit. because I'm still too scared to do it. i haven't got it figured out and I'm just taking it one day at a time. Thanks for sharing. God bless.
Hi Nydelene, how are you? Haven't heard from you in awhile. Thanks for sharing your story ❤ Yes, it's hard to work in a system that goes against our values and in a non-conducive working environment 😔 Take it one day at a time and set your intentions to figure out the answer. I pray things work out better for you. Take care and God bless, Nydelene 🙏🏻❤

Congratulations Christal for being brave enough to make a change. It is never to late to change a career as everyone has the potential to excel in their respective personal interests. We know you made a difficult but right choice. Ultimately you need to live your own happy life. I personally had to quit 10 jobs before settling for the final one which led me to a happy life. The moment I felt like not waking up to go to work, it was an indication for me to change my course. My last job, I enjoyed my work for 15 yrs. Move forward, find what suit you best and you will definitely have success and happiness.
Hi Bee Kay! I admire you for your courage to keep an open mind, to keep on trying and never settle for mediocre. I wish everyone understands how important this is. Thanks for your kind words, Bee Kay!
totally 100% agree.. why waste ur life doing something ur not passionate about.. they say life gets easier after housemanship.. but it doesnt.. it only becomes tougher.. so gud to quit early..
My lil sister also did the same thing & stopped her houseman ship in Hospital Miri. She's currently furthering her medical career in UK majoring in Psychology. While I wish for you the best, I would implore you to revisit some of your belief/s. There is no right or wrong - Is this right? Wasting my talents - This has to be the hardest lesson for me personally to learn, & something I am watching my lil sister trying to come to terms with. Anyways, good luck & well wishes.

Hi Christal, I just resigned from HOship about a week back. I read your blog about ikigai and other alternatives from leaving medicine. It was very inspirational and really make me consider somethings too. Really hope you manage to find a suitable alternative from the hospital life. Let’s wish each other good luck as we venture out into an open uncharted sea
Hi! I'm glad the blog has helped you, and thank you for your kind wishes. Yes, this new path will be an adventure and hope everything goes well for us both :)
Hi @XW94! Hope you're doing well 😊 Just wanted to inform that I’m starting an online course soon called Consciousness Academy to transform burned out young professionals from feeling stuck & lost, to gaining clarity about what they really want out of life & be empowered to make it a reality. Ever since quitting HO, so many have shared with me about how dissatisfied they are with their job & asked me what to do if they choose to quit. From all these conversations, I realized that, instead of asking what career options there are out there, I think the right question to ask is “What are my core values? What are my skills? What do I love doing? What would my dream life look like & how do I get there?” And I hope I can help through this course. If this interests you, it’d be great if you could fill up this Google Form forms.gle/ZNDd8EC5EXrYbQHBA and get your feedback before I launch the course 😊 Thanks again 🌹

Hi Christal, you just appear on my recommendation in the middle of my stuck mind. I'm doing decision whether to pursue medicine or not. Honestly, it's the biggest and desirable job that I always dream about. However, after doing some research about how the health system especially for doctor in Malaysia went through, it's somehow discourage me. I can see a lot of disadvantages if I take this path. Hope anyone can give me some advices too.
You displayed profound insight and wisdom despite quitting what many could not accomplish in the first place. You passed medical school, such a difficult thing to do, so was putting to bed the fruits of your past stresses worth it in the end?
good luck in everything u do...I have been in dilema in 2013..even now..to try something new..afraid off the thing you do will not grow..will start over and over again..end up will be at the same point after all.. Hi Nikhil! @@ChristalAsong done with the form 👍🏽 As much as I support the need to implore one’s self core values and really find one’s true ikigai, I’m afraid to say that the world and time does not stop for anyone , even if it’s a noble and personal cause as you have mentioned 🥺 though I am 💯 behind it , I think I might be speaking for a few select of us that we might actually need to be rushed in to doing an alternative line with our medical degree and I really enjoyed the video you made on alternative method for this. If you could explore a bit more on that , it could also help a lot of them still suffering and confused , stuck in the system. Thank you for opening up and quite honestly in my books , a future pioneer to look forward to in these matters 😎 keep going and would love to see more content 🙏🏽
We all know doctor lifestyle sucks but at least now you have the true Dr title (unlike PhD), this title can be very useful in business world and politics, any plan to become a politician? 😂. If you still like the medical field but hate hospital doctor lifestyle, maybe you can consider these; 1) to become an aesthetic doctor, no more crazy hour, better pay and better prospect, a chance to become your own boss. 2) to become a sonographer, just a short post graduate diploma or certificate will do. sonographer is currently in great demand in many countries including Australia and NZ. Good luck.
Hi. I am a ho in 3rd posting now. Thinking of i should quit. As i think. I only make harm to pt. Every single small mistakes makes me feel like quiting. I feel so hopeless, that i cannot improve myself. And i cannot imagine myself being a mo one day. When i see others improving, i was so proud of them. But i am sad. Cuz i think i am not good enough. I should be be good. But im not. Help me. I wanna quit. But i dont know what i wanna do after.
I hope you got help. At one point of mo-ship I was basically burned out(toxic environment). I talked to my timbalan pengarah asking for alternative and advice. I was able to change department and now I'm happy I found the right place. If you feeling incompetent, just so you know every houseman also somehow go thru this. All I can advise is read your cpg, read thru your senior(the best one's case clerking and management) before you enter a new department. All the best. Seems like you have a great empathy which is the most important thing as a doctor.
Of course, being a houseman, it is a very challenging job as it hardens you in order to face all realities in future. And when you were selected as a medical student you have DEPRIVED of someone chances who really wanted to be medical doctor. We all know that thousands applied but only some will get selected because of limited place in the University. And you amongst the lucky one got selected as medical student. Anyway, congrats for passing your medical exam and finally can call yourself a doctor. Unfortunately, you now chose to give up. I hope you have made the right choice for yourself. If you want to come back into medical profession maybe you can put a thought whether you like to join UN as volunteer or Doctor without boarder that will take you into many countries. Work hard and work fun as well. There are many possibilities out there. Good luck. Dr Christal Asong.
This notion that someone has taken away someone elses opportunity to become anything is nonsense and ignores the fact that people have free will. The people who you want to blame is the admission board, not the individual. There are a multitude of avenues (too many,in fact) for someone to get a medical degree. This is not national service!
@@ajzmn3538 Yes People have a right to choose their own path, even if one’s opinion is that it’s a wrong choice Judging from these comments, I’m inclined to think that those who got a chance to go into medicine were the “unlucky” ones! 🤪
i have a cousin from malaysia passionate to be doctor but failed to secure a position in the local university, gave up her dreams in western medicine, went to private college to study chinese medicine, now a TCM practitioner. although her patients calls her doctor, it's not the same as someone whom graduated from medical school. It's sad to have those privileged to attend medical school, successfully became a doctor, and then gives up. why not give the chance to someone who really needs it? wasted a slot for an aspiring doctor. this is sad.
This is totally what I’m feeling right now. I just don’t have the passion with clinical works. Doing something I don’t enjoy just making me tired and a waste of time for me. I literally just force myself to go to work. Yet, the thought of me becoming jobless scared the sh*t out of me. Haha. 🥲 I don’t know what to do…
Hi Benjamin! Yes it's really tough having to endure something you dread. Plus, I agree clinical or even medicine is not for everyone. Have faith though. Jobs are plenty if you look hard enough. Try out different things to discover what suits you (build skills, start a business, continue study etc or explore a different field altogether!). Easier said than done, I understand. But that one small step forward makes a huge difference :) You got this! 💪🏻

You're one courageous person to go down this path as well 👏🏻 I agree, keep on venturing and never settling for less! 😊 Since you mentioned, I’m actually starting an online course soon with the intention to transform burned out young professionals from feeling stuck & lost, to gaining clarity about their life purpose & be empowered to make it a reality. Because many have shared with me about how dissatisfied they are in their jobs & asked me what to do if they choose to quit. From all these conversations, I realized that, instead of asking what career options there are out there, I think it's better to ask, “What are my core values? What are my skills? What do I love doing? What would my dream life look like & how do I get there?” And I hope this course will help. If this interests you, it’d be great if you could fill up this Google Form forms.gle/ZNDd8EC5EXrYbQHBA and get your feedback before I launch the course 😊 Thanks in advance 🌹
Awak tinggal kat mana?
Hey cantik
I hope you got help. At one point of mo-ship I was basically burned out(toxic environment). I talked to my timbalan pengarah asking for alternative and advice. I was able to change department and now I'm happy I found the right place.
If you feeling incompetent, just so you know every houseman also somehow go thru this. All I can advise is read your cpg, read thru your senior(the best one's case clerking and management) before you enter a new department. All the best. Seems like you have a great empathy which is the most important thing as a doctor.

Hi Miki! Thank you so much 🥰 Haven't seen you in awhile, hope you're doing fine 😊
Nooo, I'm late.
YT algorithm from Jordan Peterson's vid brings me here.
Oh wow Jordan Peterson? What an honour haha
@@ChristalAsong hurray YT algorithm.
What do you plan to do after quiting your job?
Hi William! I'm planning to start my own online course + coaching business teaching people how to gain clarity in their life & career
Assalamualaikum
Same here
pelihai kah.

Yes
People have a right to choose their own path, even if one’s opinion is that it’s a wrong choice
Judging from these comments, I’m inclined to think that those who got a chance to go into medicine were the “unlucky” ones!
🤪
i have a cousin from malaysia passionate to be doctor but failed to secure a position in the local university, gave up her dreams in western medicine, went to private college to study chinese medicine, now a TCM practitioner. although her patients calls her doctor, it's not the same as someone whom graduated from medical school. It's sad to have those privileged to attend medical school, successfully became a doctor, and then gives up. why not give the chance to someone who really needs it? wasted a slot for an aspiring doctor. this is sad.
Nothing is right or wrong. You did your decision based on your own undertakings. Good luck in your future endeavors
Hi Benjamin! Hope you're doing well 😊 Just wanted to inform that I’m starting an online course soon called Consciousness Academy to transform burned out young professionals from feeling stuck & lost, to gaining clarity about what they really want out of life & be empowered to make it a reality.
