Jiu-Jitsu Escapes | 5 Ways Out of Back Mount

  • I have had several questions about the back mount and how to escape it. I don't believe in showing multiple options from the exact same position, so I took separate situations or moments in the process to show some escapes that can really help. These are, of course, not a complete guide to every situation, but some helpful ones from common conditions you might encounter.

    Thank you for publishing those back mount escape options. They're very helpful.
    I'm familiar with the early escape and at least one variation of the frame escape that Gracie University (Rorion, Ryron, and Rener's newer, larger academy) teaches for their blue belt stripe one curriculum. These techniques have collectively saved me from back mount choke submissions as many times as my partners have attempted it while rolling. If nothing else, I remember to secure my partner's wrists and work toward getting my shoulders to the mat.
    Like you said in the video, any position is better than being back mounted. These are my essential take-aways from what you taught here, and I thank you again, Professor.

    Good video. The only flaw or issue I have with the instruction is that on the first three or four escapes, most back mount situations will not involve the hooks in first. It is usually almost always the seat belt position first. The first four moves only work when playing a situational drill trying to take the back with only the hooks in. The instructor should mention that as a caveat

      +liyun sun That’s true to an extent, but during the hand fighting different variations and degrees of looseness happen with the connection. But I️ account for both seatbelt and non-seatbelt options. Thanks!

    Very nice 👍🏼 - great moves. Thanks 🙏. Once you get that arm to the opposite side of your head, there’s also a Brabo Choke as you turn into him. I learned the seatbelt with the bottom hand on top of the choking hand/arm, that way when it is defended against you still have the choking arm free. I noticed the attacker had the seatbelt the reverse way, top hand over bottom one. Is that by design/your preference?

    • @KnightJiuJitsu
      @KnightJiuJitsu  5 лет назад +1

      I prefer the bottom hand on top of the top hand for the seatbelt from the back, myself. for this video it didn't really matter when showing these escapes though, so I didn't specify how he did it. Thanks.

    Lots of good stuff here. I was a little concerned about the last one insofaras you are falling to the head on pillow side, even with the 2 vs 1 grip. But I'm presuming you are giving a worst case scenario for when you're being dragged to that side. Overall would it be better to attach with the 2 vs 1 to the underhook side?

    • @KnightJiuJitsu
      @KnightJiuJitsu  7 лет назад +1

      +Ronald Scott You’re correct in that I’m going by early to late on the escapes. I don’t want to be in any of these, but I try to address them in order of how bad/late I have to escape. The last is the worst, in my opinion and I would definitely not choose to go there if he didn’t force me there.

    • @jpreis2012
      @jpreis2012 7 лет назад +2

      I am not a black belt yet, so take me answer with a grain of salt. But I think that if you try the 2 on 1 escape on the underhook side you give the opponent a free armbar, as seen on the Werdum vs Harris fight. So I think its better to try it the way professor Knight showed. :)

    • @KnightJiuJitsu
      @KnightJiuJitsu  7 лет назад

      You give them an armbar if you do not control the arm properly. You should go to tricep control asap to avoid the armbar. Staying in the hand/wrist grip is the problem. Also, they can guillotine you with that grip. I use the 2 on 1 with the scoop and don't get armbared or choked. Also, I end up choking them with a brabo / darce or anaconda. Hope that helps.

    • @KnightJiuJitsu

      Those are interchangeable terms and not universally agreed upon. Most people just say "back" and leave it at that.

    • @swedenludvig
      @swedenludvig Год назад

      @@KnightJiuJitsu I disagree since IBJJF distinguish the two:
      "Mount and Back Mount (4 points) When the athlete is on top, clear of the half-guard, sitting on the opponent’s torso and with two knees or one foot and one knee on the ground, facing the opponent’s head and with up to one arm trapped under his/her leg - and thus remains for 3 (three) seconds.
      Back Control (4 points) • When the athlete takes control of the opponent’s back, placing his/her heels between the opponent’s thighs without crossing his/her legs and in a position to trap up to one of the opponent’s arms without trapping the arm above the shoulder line - and thus remains for 3 (three) seconds.“ (IBJJF Rulebook)
      There is also pictures in the IBJJF rulebook that visualizes this distinction between back mount and back control.

    • @KnightJiuJitsu
      @KnightJiuJitsu  Год назад

      @swedenludvig - you’re welcome to call it whatever you would like. So is the IBJJF. It doesn’t change the validity of the techniques shown in the video. The semantics of names change and are rarely universally agreed upon. I don’t look at the IBJJF as the end-all, be-all authority. So thanks for the clarification according to them, but it’s not that big of a deal to me personally.

    • @swedenludvig
      @swedenludvig Год назад

      @@KnightJiuJitsu The validity of the techniques does not affect the definition of the positions, as you said. However, I would argue that the positions back mount and back control (as in the definition of IBJJF) are vastly different and thus deserves to have different names. Defining and agreeing upon names for positions are helpful for when discussing or when for example searching after videos on youtube.

    At 4:24 the guy on ur back that has seatbelt doesn't have the correct grip. It should be Gable grip. The grip he uses would be to simple to break his grip and pull his hands free so u can escape. Seatbelt is ALWAYS Table grip.

      I think the worse the position you’re trying to escape from, the more sensitivity, patience and sometimes explosiveness they require. If you’re trying to escape back mount, then person just needs to hold and stop you. The escape happens better when they are concerned more about getting the submission and less about positional control. So I guess what I’m getting at is try not to force the escape and try to get them focused on several things and divide their attention. Hope that makes sense.

    Great stuff as always. That second escape doe. Hey we’re all awesome but that one was my favorite. Do you have any videos on your preferred takedowns? Would love to see

    Can I ask you something? At the final stage what if instead of having a body lock he grabs your right arm with his right arm and with a triangle body lock locks your other hand while sneaking his left arm to your neck (or the opposite) ? (like Gordon ryan at ADCC) can you do anything? I know its a very rare scenario but it must be the hardest back control position to escape .Thank you for the amazing tutorials btw

    I honestly was about to say this is bull- bc when you were showing this it looked like he could hook you again. But I realized you are showing this "step by step" xD

    1:07 I've seen Rener Gracie do an escape like this. He just holds on to each individual foot while staying bent forward. If the guy pulls him back his hooks get pulled up and apart so eventually he'd just bail from the back mount.

    Hi coach. I was trying to figure out a good escape plan from RNC after the attacker engages the turtle to take the backmount. Your video is enlightening, once more. The last two escapes are exactly what I was looking for. Thank you very much for your dedication and all these precious materials! Greetings from Belize!

      I have a question coach: do the last two defense moves work even when my opponent seatbelts using the fist in the overhook or some corrections have to be taken?
