  • Sapienza University was founded in 1303. Today, it is one of the biggest and oldest universities in Europe. Its campus is located just outside central Rome, and I was curious to see what's it like inside. Join me!

The problem here is they put Italian things in everything so they do everything in Italian way. I would say it is good but not like the American or British universities where after we land to the great jobs. It’s good for Italians actually because they’re more habitual of such schooling.

    The first motto on the building says: "Education elevates the inner strength and the good behaviour strengthens the heart".
    "Giurisprudenza" means "Law Studies"; the motto in Latin says: "Law/Justice is above (literally "lady") and the most important (literally "queen") of all virtues".
    The Latin motto on the Lit. and Phil. building means "Poets' great and sacred labour saves everything from the destiny (of death)".
    The statue in the centre is Athena (Minerva for the Romans, and for the students of La Sapienza), goddess of knowledge and wisdom. Legend has that you shouldn't watch the Minerva before an exam, because it brings bad luck.

    I noticed you were referring to the building from the 20’s & 30’s as Fascist Architecture; it seems that you are referring to the period as much as the elements of that era of modernism, which I really appreciate in your narration. I don’t recall seeing other collections of such buildings of the style or period when I toured Rome. Do you know of others like this collection on the campus?

    • @joecesa1013
      @joecesa1013 2 года назад +1

      There are modern Art Deco-inspired buildings scattered around. Not alot as they keep preserving other older buildings. Near the Ara Pacis/Mausoleum of Augustus by the Tiber are a few government buildings clearly built in the fascist era. I don't like fascists--then or now-- but the architecture of the time I find intriguing and beautiful. Many have relief sculptures and social inspirational messages.

    • @Laurelin70
      @Laurelin70 6 часов назад

      @@joecesa1013 Art Deco is not the same style than fascist style. The fascist style is a modernism that recalls the grandeur of the Roman Empire, hence the big, very big architectures, the pillars, the arches, the marble/travertine, the statues and the bas-reliefs, the fountains... but without the decorations.
      You can find the best example of that type of architecture in the EUR neighborhood, in the southern part of Rome: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EUR,_Rome (there are also a lot of post-WWII architectures too, very very modern stuff).
