  • Caroline's obsession with the FB Mazda RX7 really encapsulates why I make these short automotive films. Caroline's car history is not necessarily one peppered with a whole list of interesting vehicles, in fact it's quite the opposite - as Caroline would no doubt tell you. Yet throughout the years there's been one anchoring feature in Caroline's automotive life - and that is a complete unadulterated love for the FB RX7.
Really this is a story almost 40 years in the making - the passion for all things RX7 started as a young teen, when Caroline spotted a car which seemed to possess bewitching powers - this car was a Mazda RX7 and from that day forward Caroline was destined to own one (or three).
This dream was realised in her late 20's when Caroline was finally able to purchase an RX7 in her favourite colour - 'tender blue'. Unfortunately, this car was later written off, but Caroline very much had the RX7 bug and proceeded to go out and buy another one, this time in a less preferable colour. The car would later leave Caroline's ownership.
20 years fly by, life moves on and then we're in the midst of a never-seen-before world-event (the to-not-be-mentioned). The desire to own a RX7 comes back, and Caroline has to act. That's when she finds her dream car, a 1984 Mazda RX7 in her colour - 'tender blue'.
    The rest is history.
I really don't see Caroline parting with this car, it quite literally is her dream vehicle.
Be like Caroline, live your dream.

The first generation of the RX-7, SA (early) and FB (late), was a two-seater 2 door hatchback coupé. It featured a 12A carbureted rotary engine as well as the option for a 13B with electronic fuel injection in later years.
The Series 2, referred to as the FB (produced from 1981 to 1983), had integrated plastic-covered bumpers, wide black rubber body side moldings, wraparound taillights and updated engine control components. While marginally longer overall, the new model was 135 lb (61 kg) lighter in federalized trim.[3] The four-speed manual option was dropped for 1981 as well, while the gas tank grew larger and the dashboard was redesigned, including a shorter gear stick mounted closer to the driver.[3] In 1983, the 130 mph (209 km/h) speedometer returned for the RX-7. The GSL package provided optional four-wheel disc brakes, front ventilated (Australian model) and clutch-type rear limited slip differential (LSD). This revision of the SA22 was known in North America as the "FB" after the US Department of Transportation mandated 17 digit Vehicle Identification Number changeover. For various other markets worldwide, the 1981-1985 RX-7 retained the 'SA22C' VIN prefix. In the UK, the 1978-1980 series 1 cars carried the SA code on the VIN but all later cars (1981-1983 series 2 and 1984-1985 series 3) carried the FB code and these first-generation RX-7s are known as the "FB" only in Northern America.
In Europe, the FB was mainly noticed for having received a power increase from the 105 PS (77 kW) of the SA22; the 1981 RX-7 now had 115 PS (85 kW) on tap. European market cars also received four-wheel disc brakes as standard.
The RX-7 made Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list five times. More than 800,000 were manufactured over its lifetime.

Love this video, can completely relate to 3 different RX7s over 30 plus years depending on where I was in my life. Series 1 in early 20's, Series 2 late 20's now a Series 3 at 55. Love your passion!!

I can already tell that I’m going to binge all your videos, then wait impatiently for new ones. As good as, if not better than, Petrolicious, because your car owners are real people who derive great joy from their machines, no matter what type they are.

Hi Alastair - Thanks for the kind comments, it really means alot. I grew up around old vehicles so it feels important to me to document as many as I can through a short film!
