Project #9 was the first workshop done with Nell Carter sometime before 1978. Nell left the project. In 1979 they brought in Jennifer Holliday for Effie. Then Jennifer Holliday left and they did 2 more workshops with Jenifer Lewis as her replacement. They were going to bring back Jennifer Holliday but she declined as she saw the role was cut to pieces. Finally Michael Bennett brought her back several months later with the coaxing of David Geffen. Unbelievable. In essence, because of that last workshop, Effie became what she became because they beefed up the role for Jennifer Holliday. It wouldnt be the same without her. People think Holliday was just a hired hand. She literally helped create that role.

I’m sitting here reading Jenifer’s book
And I’m like I know good and well Sheryl Lee Ralph isn’t 93 y/o. Why Ms Lewis taking all those digs at Ms Ralph?🤨

This is 1980 we're talking about here. The last workshop they did before they mounted the original Broadway production in 1981. It's Jennifer Holliday.
