    This is actually from 1930. The movie playing at the Capitol Theater is "Dance, Fools, Dance" which is a 1930 Joan Crawford film, which was a big hit.

    Before transistors and digital technology, it's amazing how they could make animated neons using only analogue methods - almost 100 years ago!! :O

    This was in 1931. That’s when Dance, Fools, Dance, with Joan Crawford, came out.

      Yes, the marquees seen generally have movies from 1931, along with at least one 1931 Broadway production.

      If this was 1931 and not 1929 like indicated for this footage, can't fool everyone.

      I would have loved living in my hometown during this era.
      My Grandmother was 11yrs old, during this time, probably playing hopscotch. ☺️
      (Uh oh…I’m showing my age, again) 🤣

    Every adult in film is hatted; and were they now alive, would be a centenarian. Cars are pre-aeronautiform, boxy with running boards.

    This is terrific, but as others have pointed out this is 1931. Another movie on a marquis was the pre-code “My Past” which was released in 1931 starring Bebe Daniel’s

    This is actually 1931 given the films displayed on the theater marquees. Trader Horn, The Front Page and Dance Fool Dance all date from 1931. This would have been so easy to have checked.

    Кажется, мы на Бродвее. Несколько дней назад я видел клип на RUclips - очень старое видео под названием "Таймc Сквер и Бродвей в 1929 году". И в этом примерно десятиминутном видео были спешащие по Бродвею люди и едущие машины. Все торопятся, стремясь куда-то попасть. Это было в 1929-м. Мне интересно, куда они попали?

    The people seem prosperous for 1931, two years after the Wall Street Crash.

    • @redadamearth
      @redadamearth Год назад

      This was early '31, when many people still thought it was just a bad recession, not a total collapse. Unemployment in '31 was around 15%. Which is bad, but not "collapse" bad, like it eventually got. When the depression TRULY hit was the next year, in 1932, when unemployment hit 23% and GDP completely cratered. 1932 was the worst year of the Depression. Also keep in mind that this is Broadway in New York City, a very prosperous area, in general. You wouldn't see many people suffering badly from the crash on Broadway, during any year of the Depression - the worst effects hit rural communities and poorer neighborhoods.

      Is that all you thought about while watching this? You must be one of those people that has race on the brain 24/7. I can assure you there were plenty of black people up in Harlem dancing the night away at the same time this video was filmed.
