- I became the Drum Roadie with Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1973 & wore many Hats with the Band for over 40 years of working with members of the Original band. I was working as the Guitar Roadie at the time of the Most Famous Airplane Crash in History October 20 , 1977 & nominated as The World's Most Famous Roadie by Fans & Peers in 2022 - Sharing never before details of Lynyrd Skynyrd that have been overlooked in all of the Movies - Books & Documentaries that have been released up until now .
CO - PILOT
Griff Martin AKA The Rocket Scientist is the Co Host Of the Craig Read Stoned Roadie Podcast. Griff known as the man that can get anything like Radar O'Reilly on mash has even lavished Craig his podcast partner with hard to find items. You may see Craig appear on the show with some of these items like Craig"s Rocket Scientist lab coat and even an airline pilot captains hat and shirt. Craig will tell you he likes gifts but if their gifts anyone can get he doesn't want them. Griff spent 35 years at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Cocoa Beach Florida processing and transporting human space flight hardware. He has supported over 100 space shuttle flights and just before he retired helped to assemble the shuttle replacement rocket ARTIMUS set to launch this year. During Griff's career he has worked as a technical director in many major motion pictures at Kennedy like Armageddon, Apollo Thirteen, Space Cowboys and First Man. Griff is a long time fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd and met Craig on FakeBook where they both share the same wit and humor. Craig invited Griff to go on a VIP tour to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and they have been friends ever since.

No offence was meant to Gary about the bird sounds, it's just that Duane made sounds like that and there is a certain technique to achieve them. Gary's guitar setup for slide on Freebird was his own thing. He put the wire under the strings to raise the action so that he wouldn't have to change guitars, because the slide would hit the frets. What I heard about Freebird is that he went to tune up one time and he accidentally tuned two strings to G and played it and the rest is history.

Thanks for adding that clip with Joe Barnes. I do remember seeing it on that commemorative video of Gary. Maybe some time show clips of when Brandon, Zack and that other guy was playing guitars doing tribute to Gary. Folks may have not caught the clips on Griff's channel.

Great podcast! As much as I have heard about Joe Barnes, I've never seen him. He looks so different than I'd imagine. His voice reminds me of Mr. Mackey on South Park!! 😂 What a truly nice guy. Sounds like Ronnie was hell with that broken bottle to the throat thing, other than Craig and Gary ol' Ed King got it too. I think it was the If I Leave Here Tomorrow documentary that Ed King talks about one night Ronnie broke a bottle and stuck it to his throat. I think it was after a show and Ronnie was raising hell and mad about something, he broke the bottle and stuck it to Ed's throat and said 'and I don't want to hear a word out of you.'

I never heard anything on this, but I have a hunch the White Hats were behind Oliver Anthony and giving him that song Rich Men north of Richmond. They needed to keep waking up the people up to all the govt corruption going on. The timing of that song coming out was way to perfect, the way it resonated with people all over the World and coming from an unknown new singer. I'm probably wrong, but just a hunch...

Fun Fact - Stevie Nicks , hubba hubba , Started with the group and their ritual before getting on stage was they would be snorton the cola off each others hands or arms. Her recreational use turned to full addict , even designed jewelry and clothing. Heavy into it some had seen her do so much and staying up till the last man fell they figured she was going to die anytime. When the hole in her nasal area developed she still couldnt leave it alone. Someone told her they knew others that some how they inserted coke analy which eliminated the nasal method and absorbed quick. She even had an assistant that helped her do this for quite awhile. Not good.

For those who are interested in some other famous groupies Pamela DeBarre she talked about Jim MOrrison and MIck Jagger among others, Elvira was a groupie before she became the horror icon...and there was a very young underaged one who was hooked up with Jimmy Page. One time a video on youtube came on about them and I had dozed off and woke up and this was playing. There was one who talked about have plaster molds...I've heard Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Mick, David Bowie, Steven Tyler....but I've never heard any of the Skynyrd guys named....maybe they were on a different groupie circuit...
