Finally! I’ve long been interested in the atem mini for it $300 low price but the pro and pro iso just weren’t enough, now the extreme makes much more sense and is worth the price. Good job BMD!
Hey Aaron, love the videos. We made some pretty cool animated Super Source transitions that we normally use on only our bigger atem switchers but now with the atem mini pro extreme, its even easier for us to take the super source on the road. We also made a companion file for quick setup and ease of use. Happy to share them with you if you would like. Keep it up!
You actually don't need balanced inputs if you have a hot signal. You can also use camera balanced ins (this is preferred as it doesn't mess with latency). Also, a balanced input requires some sort of amp, that would add onto bulkiness of device.
@@oliverpavicevic5387 True, but this thing is called the EXTREME, lol. Because I primarily need this for music and I don’t have a camera with stereo balanced ins, I’m forced to convert my high end audio system to an unbalanced signal and then plug into a fragile 3.5mm jack. @@thegearinreviewchannel2352 you might just take a DI box (behringer makes cheap ones that are really good) and then connect them with atem with a short XLR to 3.5 jack. Glad they listened to you! Great new features. For more ports, I am using a 16 Port low cost HDMI switch plugged into one of the Mini Pro ports. Altho not as fast switching as the Mini, this works quite well and allows me to add a lot more content for my Digital Amateur HD Television Station. In addition, I have had good success with a variety of HDMI splitters with the HDMI out split out to four devices including the TV modulator/transmitter. Hyperdeck Mini wokrs well too. Here I use a BlackMagic converter SDI to HDI into a port on the HDMI switch.
I really hope that both usb can be used as webcam with the ability to have 2 “PGM”. This would allow to have non screens with text as the main cam for zoom and be able to do screen sharing with the other webcam output!
Thanks. I wasn’t going to order because I didn’t think it was much make than just 8 inputs but your video showed me it has exactly what I’ve been missing! Ordered through your link. Thanks
Thank you for getting straight to the point and staying on task rather than telling me about your future videos every other sentence. Good information, thanks.
I was thinking about your video as soon as BlackMagic started announcing the features. Thanks Aaron for putting together your bd gift wish list in the first place. Am sure it gave them a nudge in putting together this great device.
So glad I didn't buy yet a second PRO ISO, would have been pretty mad hahaha. I thought your wishlist was going to stay like that, a wishlist, wouldn't have thought they would out do it. This is huge.
I think it would be pretty cool if 3rd party manufactures created some sort of docking station that would convert the HDMI to SDI as well as providing redundant power. You might lose some of the camera control features but it beats connecting a bunch of adapters at the back of the ATEM
Great job recapping All the features. this opens up the door for broadcasters as well because it allows us to have all the iso records and the resolve file with all the cuts. we use the pro iso for our podcast and it saves so much time in post work. we are considering replacing our 1 m/e with the extreme iso for that very reasons.
Thank you for the good summary! I´m so happy I saw your annoncement of your livestream about the BM announcement because I actually wanted to return my Atem Mini Pro last week and order an Atem Mini Pro ISO. No question that I´ll now go for the Atem Mini Extreme. No ISO cause after rethinking more about it I guess I´m not going to use it. And if I´m going to miss it I´m sure there will be a next update maybe in the end of the year :-)
@@RolandDobbins of course I think you’re right. But my problem is that I already pitched the Pro ISO which would be 300€ more in Germany. If I now go from Atem Mini Pro to Extreme ISO it would be 800€ plus. I guess I’ll get into trouble then 😄
I told you in your wishlist video I would instabuy the switcher you mentioned. I have now instabought the switcher they delivered. The unbalanced output is my only regret of this. The dual hdmi output and dual usb output are total game changers. I'm so hyped. Thanks! Used your link. Great work, Aaron. I wouldn't have known about the release without your video.
I'm upgrading purely because of the 2 usb ports. I am doing mostly zoom meetings now that I want to live stream and record. This is really cool. Would love to see how the 4 upstream/downstream keyer works in a virtual environment. I can see great potential with that.
Please note about the mobile phone software update: It does work as a backup to connect your phone. So when your wired stream connection gets lost, it automatically can switch to the phone BUT it will not automatically switch back when the wired connection comes back online again. At least not in my tests of today. Maybe a bug in the software. Please others test it and let us know.
Dude, I am so excited for this one. Literally fixed all the little annoyances from my Mini and Pro, plus more features even. Instant pre-order for sure.
Great that Blackmagic listens too! Thank you Aaron for mentioning YoloBox in the video! It is indeed a powerful combination with YoloBox & ATEM product!
I bought a Mini, because it was all I could afford at the time. glad now that i resisted several impulses to upgrade to a Pro... now the Extreme is on my list! Soon! Looking forward to your videos on it when you get yours.
What would be great on all atem minis would be the capability to send all inputs directly as webcam stream. For example if you use vMix a 4 or 8 ch interface mode would be a great thing.
Off topic a little but I have a question. Just purchased my first BMPCC and I can not get any camera control with the atem mini software unless I'm on version 8.3 of the firmware. I have tried every other version including the new update and I have no camera control and no tally light
the new extreme would be great for live casting music with more than 3 band members. You could iso on each member and add a couple of repeating sliders to give some motion with out adding someone to move the cameras.
Just ordered the Extreme ISO. I also own the ATEM 4k 1M/E. Looking forward to putting it through it's paces. I'm actually going to get rid of the ATEM 4k because it's LOUD and I discovered a really nasty little secret that nobody bothered to tell me.... the BlackMagic Pocket Cinema 4k cameras have an HDMI output that only has a 1080 resolution!! This was a MASSIVE letdown and meant that my 4k switch was totally useless. Especially given the features of the Mini.
I think the headphone jack may have been planned from the start but not implemented until now, because there are the extra button pads on the circuit board in the original ATEM in that position beside the external audio controls.
Thanks so much for sharing this recap! totally psyched about this device. I'm using a single ATEM Mini Pro ISO.. and I was thinking about getting another PRO just for my workshop studio.. So maybe getting one would solve that problem.
Nope, it is all still 1920x1080. But since the ATEM mini also generates a time code, you may use BlackMagic camera's to record on the camera itself at higher resolution and later replace the footage of that camera in DaVinci Resolve with the recording from the camera. Not sure if any other camera accepts the timecode via HDMI, but if they do, I guess your workflow may be the same.
So I actually have a question: why would I choose this over software based solution in your opinion? A couple of weeks ago I streamed a 5 cameras live concert (1h30m) to facebook, with digitally zoomed scenes for different looks, up to 3 cameras split screen, overlay graphics, pre recorded video ads, i even sharpened the image coming out of an older canon dslr and added some color correction to better match the other cameras... I used obs and a 2012 macmini i7 quad wirh 16GB of ram, 2 internal drives (256GB ssd + 1TB hdd). For the video inputs i used inexpensive hdmi to usb chinese cards (about 18$ each on amazon) and a usb3 hub for a couple of extra usbs. The mini was definitely too hot but didn’t flinch, I even recorded the streaming on the internal HDD. Now I replaced the thermal paste and added an external fan (ran a few tests and with this little mod i went from 104C to 70C with 98% constant cpu usage) I basically spent only 150$ ish... 100ish for the hdmi cards 30ish for the fan and 10ish for the thermal paste. It is definitely loud now with the fans on.. but other than noise... what’s the advantage of the atem mini? Why not buy an elgato streamdeck for example if i just wanna add physical buttons? There’s literally NOBODY talking about this on the internet... i can’t be the only one confused about this can i?
Can you loop back audio out to an audio in and then use sw to select which audio in from hdmi is sent to audio in the program. This may allow a single camera mic to be used with multiple cameras
There's a number of much better solutions than wearing headphones on top of other headphones, but this is what I was able to do within 30 seconds of realizing the problem right before we went on air!
@@aaronpk I was referring to the new atem extreme and your need to select which audio source is sent to the program out. Seems as if the audio on the hdmi inputs can be directed to headphone out, and then looped back to one of the line inputs, you can then use the atem extreme to switch audio source. Not sure if this makes sense
I think I understand the question and this is how I operate my ATEM Mini Pro: I run up to 4 lavaliere mics into my Sony FS7 (you can add two more XLR inputs through the Sony hot shoe) and set their levels in camera. Then on the ATEM Mini Pro I simply turn the HDMI audio input to ON (not AFV and all other HDMI audio set OFF) and switch between cameras. Audio comes in from HDMI 1 no matter which HDMI is on-screen.
Howdy Aaron - hoping you might see this. I cannot get our school's new ATEM Mini Extreme to give me a proper green-lit button for preview on the switcher. The green preview functionality works ok on the software, but it's like the preferences setting (on a Macbook) isn't taking hold on the switcher hardware itself. It's only enabling red-to-red button direct switching - "Cut" & "Auto" buttons (on the switcher hardware) don't work. (they do on the software....) Any advice, sir? Love your videos and community - thanks for all you do.
Wow, I was about to invest in the MiniPro till I saw some link about the extreme, guess I"ll have some time to think if it makes sense to save up for the extreme.
One of these days Blackmagic needs to understand that audio is important. To that scrap the 1/8th inch toy audio inputs and go to XLR, so that we can have good balanced audio in. So still will have to feed audio through a camera ... so sad.
Did they ever do an update so that you can use the Picture in Picture buttons on the ATEM Mini for preset macros? Meaning, not in the software, but on the actual device? Thank you!
Great information here thanks for this review! Small little comment, kindly get rid of the background music because it’s very annoying. Thank you keep up the great work!!
No, the ATEM will always show up as just one webcam. You'd need to do the video processing in the ATEM, or the much simpler solution would be two cheap usb capture cards
Aaron, this is a nice summary to complement the livestream you did with PhotoJoe yesterday. As always, thanks for all of your efforts. (now let's all hope there isn't an SUPER extreme model coming out in a couple of months. HA!)
Those 2 HDMI-out ports would be handy, now that I'm using my HDMI-out to my cam link to eliminate to audio delay. No more local monitoring. Been wondering: do you think I could use an HDMI splitter so I can send HDMI-out to my local monitor and also to the cam link? Or would there be too much signal loss?
For using a mirrorless/DSLR camera in 1080p mode at 30fps to do Zoom conferences: Do you know how the video quality of the Blackmagic ATEM Mini compares to the Magewell Capture HDMI Gen 12 and/or the Elgato Cam Link? If I want to minimize latency, am I better off getting an internal computer card like the Magewell Pro Capture HDMI Card? I heard complaints about certain capture cards that use some form of jpeg compression that reduces the video image quality. Does that really matter? Does a device using USB 2.0 vs USB 3.0 make any difference in latency? (I know the Blackmagic ATEM Mini is a switcher with extra features, but at this temporary point, I'm just trying to understand differences in latency and video quality for each device using 1 mirrorless/DSLR camera.) Thanks.
Does the additional upstream keyers mean that we can now do picture-in-picture and green screen at the same time? Losing the keying in the PIP window made PIP useless to me.
Thank you for your channel. Great content. On the ATEM Mini Extreme, is there a way to configure the multi view (or some other output method) such that the connected HDMI monitor is filled with the PROGRAM with audio levels visible? You can press a button on the ATEM Mini Extreme and tell the multi view port to output the PROGRAM. That's good, but it doesn't have the audio levels on it. When I'm running a show, I need to setup a large monitor with the PROGRAM and the audio levels. Is this feasible?
ooh interesting use case! There's no way to do exactly what you're describing. The best you can do is configure the multiview output to have 4 large windows and turn on the audio meters. You could make 3 of them black so you only see the program out in the top right corner for example.
@@aaronpk Thanks for your quick response. The setup you described is exactly what I used in my last live show and it worked well. I just thought I must be missing something because I wasn't using the whole screen. When I do my show, I'm running everything myself. I try to keep my eyes on the camera so that I'm looking at my audience. But sometimes I forget to flip the mic on when I'm switching and my audience can't hear me. I use the multi view audio levels to make sure the audience is both seeing and hearing me. I've been putting the multi view right next to the camera so that I can see it in my peripheral vision when I'm looking into the camera. I might be able to rig up some kind of light or other audio-on indicator and put it near the camera. I've also been working with AFV, which helps, but sometimes I show full-screen slides with a graphics computer input and I speak as I show the slides. So in this case, the mic needs to be ON even though my face isn't on the screen. Anyway, thanks for your answer and your channel. The ATEM Mini Extreme is very cool.
HA! I missed the announcement, but I got many notifications from a local "second hand market" app, filled with listing for Pro and Pro ISO models. I get it now. :D Congrats on the wishlist/predictions accuracy!
It totally depends on what you're streaming to. RUclips has an "ultra-low latency" option which ends up being about 3 seconds delay total. Other services may end up closer to 8 or even 30 seconds.
Hi, I'm not sure if this is a silly question but can you use the Atem Extreme to overlay 4 cameras at one time? I'm currently using 3 different Elgato Cam Links as I need this for my online music teaching but an all in one solution would be so much better!
I have a atem extreme I do virtual presentations with 4 camera's, does it matter if I put them on 4k even though the atem will put it down to 1080? will I get a better picture?
I think I heard Grant mention the Extreme is shipping now (that usually means shipping to distributors, so will still be a bit before they can ship it out to customers), and the Extreme ISO should be a week or two behind that.
Since it looks like they listened to you, can you mention to them to add the ability in the software to manually type in a live stream server address? My provider changes my live stream server address randomly each time I go to stream...it's a pain to edit the xml everytime I go to stream
You can control the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema cameras from this by connecting just an HDMI cable. You can also control the Studio Camera by using their new bidirectional HDMI/SDI converter, connecting the HDMI cable to the ATEM and two SDI cables to the camera!
Each USB port can either be connected to a computer or a hard drive but not both. There are two USB ports on the Extreme, so you can use one to record to a hard drive and the other to connect to the computer as a webcam and for the software control.
Finally! I’ve long been interested in the atem mini for it $300 low price but the pro and pro iso just weren’t enough, now the extreme makes much more sense and is worth the price. Good job BMD!

Did they ever do an update so that you can use the Picture in Picture buttons on the ATEM Mini for preset macros? Meaning, not in the software, but on the actual device? Thank you!
Unfortunately not, but at least the new Extreme has actual macro buttons!
Do they finally allow split output? Because with Atem Mini Pro this is a real bummer.
We got our new ATEM Mini Extreme for our Ethiopian FM radio Live show @
7:46 > jus asking. wouldn't i be able to do this with like ECAMM Live?
Great information here thanks for this review! Small little comment, kindly get rid of the background music because it’s very annoying. Thank you keep up the great work!!
Can’t wait for the review 🇲🇽🇺🇸✌️🤗
Is it possible to connect 2 cameras to the ATEM Mini and have them as separated sources on Streamlabs OBS to make a split screen with those 2 cameras?
It might take a couple tries to find an hdmi splitter that works, but it should be possible! Try to find one that is powered and isnt a generic brand
Are they offering 720p/30 streaming as an option yet or they still stuck on 1920 as the only option?
Sounds cool that they are making this, but the video switcher wars getting crazy😂...this atem sounds like the end all be all for HDMI setups!
Solid review and great news!
Super video! I applauded for $2.00 👏
great video ! everything I wanted to know about this new product ;-) I seriously consider buying one and sell my Television Studio HD
Does the additional upstream keyers mean that we can now do picture-in-picture and green screen at the same time? Losing the keying in the PIP window made PIP useless to me.
It does! You'll be able to use one upstream keyer for picture in picture and another for green screen!
Can the two usbc ports be used for webcam in?
Nope
Congrats on the wishlist/predictions accuracy!
Thanks for the concise update Aaron, I couldn’t watch the whole show last night :-)
what is the delay between the livestream feed and the switch location?
It totally depends on what you're streaming to. RUclips has an "ultra-low latency" option which ends up being about 3 seconds delay total. Other services may end up closer to 8 or even 30 seconds.
Hi, I'm not sure if this is a silly question but can you use the Atem Extreme to overlay 4 cameras at one time? I'm currently using 3 different Elgato Cam Links as I need this for my online music teaching but an all in one solution would be so much better!
You can! That's the "SuperSource" feature!
@Aaron Parecki, QUESTION, Am I mistaken when I say “I think I saw Garry connecting a Samsung T7 SSD to the USB port for recording”!! ??
that did look like a T7. I think the last firmware update solved the T7 issues. Also, his name is Grant. :-)
I was thinking buying an ATEM television studio HD... Thankfully I didn't buy it yet ! Will be buying the extreme ISO instead :D
Hi! Generally how much latency video/audio there's in Atem mini pro? Thank's
Basically none! Maybe 1 frame depending on where you're measuring
Will there be atem extreme stand?
Do we get an extra media pool on the old Atem mini by a software update?
it would appear to still just be a single pool on the ATEM Mini Pro
I have a atem extreme I do virtual presentations with 4 camera's, does it matter if I put them on 4k even though the atem will put it down to 1080? will I get a better picture?
The ATEM actually won't accept a 4K signal on the inputs, so the cameras need to be outputting 1080 anyway
I wished for 2 usb Cs. Thank you BMD, i will buy it next year. 😭
Do we know when this thing expected to ship out?
Thank you as usual for your awesome videos!
I think I heard Grant mention the Extreme is shipping now (that usually means shipping to distributors, so will still be a bit before they can ship it out to customers), and the Extreme ISO should be a week or two behind that.
Great vid as always. They must have seen you birthday video and thought “ok hold my beer”
I was hoping they would have added xlr balanced jacks for musicians...
Since it looks like they listened to you, can you mention to them to add the ability in the software to manually type in a live stream server address? My provider changes my live stream server address randomly each time I go to stream...it's a pain to edit the xml everytime I go to stream
Awwww.. I bought my AMP just before Christmas of 2020. Bad timing, I know. 😁
Is it possible to control the BMD Studio Cameras with this one via HDMI? (I am almost sure not... but please correct me if I am wrong) cheers
You can control the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema cameras from this by connecting just an HDMI cable. You can also control the Studio Camera by using their new bidirectional HDMI/SDI converter, connecting the HDMI cable to the ATEM and two SDI cables to the camera!
@@aaronpk Wow cool. Good to know! Thank you, Aaron!
Great video, looks like you got most of what you ask for... so what next... built in four streaming bridge
Can you use the USB port as a webcam, record and the computer software all at the same time?
Each USB port can either be connected to a computer or a hard drive but not both. There are two USB ports on the Extreme, so you can use one to record to a hard drive and the other to connect to the computer as a webcam and for the software control.
I need 4K for screen recording
