Streets of Rage Remake v5.2 - Roo, Mania (No Deaths, No Police Specials) - SoR1 Route

  • The hardest route in the game featuring 3 fights against Abadede, two of the Blaze clones fights, and one of the toughest elevator fights for Roo who can easily get thrown over the side. Somehow, with a LOT of practice on the last 3 stages, I was getting to the point where I was only getting killed once or twice in a playthrough, and from there it was just a matter of playing over and over until I got a run that did it without ever dying! I was super happy with this.
    It's a brutal route to clear in general. The SoR1 versions of Galsias are considerably tougher than their SoR2 and SoR3 counterparts, the constant kneeling to avoid damage the whip ladies do is a nuisance, and the karate guys are brutally difficult depending on what type you're facing (each colour's a distinct version with different behaviour). The SoR1 Signals are tough, but are among the easier enemies on this route as they're fairly predictable.
    The bosses on this route are also very tough and a death can easily result from many of them:
    • Abadede's running punch can easily kill you and you've got to get through 3 of them total.
    • The Blaze clones can suddenly dish out a lot of damage if you get hit and fail to lock them down in a hurry.
    • Mr. X is tougher than on the SoR2 route because you have to face him with the SoR1 Galsias that can pull out knives.
    Very nasty stuff!

      Thanks! It wasn't really something I deliberately set out to do either at first. I was aware of a Max run that had done it deathless but I never expected Roo to do so. I was just having fun playing Mania.
      After a long time of working up to beating Mania without continues, I realized I was able to get through the game only dying on few specific spots most of the time, namely the elevator fights. The first deathless clear I got was SoR2 route. I spent half a week practicing the Jet encounters on the boat and elevator, as well as the final elevator's wave of whip ladies, and it turns out I got good enough to semi-reliably get through without a death! From there, it took a good dozen attempts or so? But I was able to eventually clear the game's major routes deathless, then I worked up to doing it without using Police (namely to help with Jets).

      I've never played around with the AI settings. Too complex for me to get into and I'd rather challenge the game at the default settings.

    I remember playing this game decades ago as a young kid on my Sega Mega Drive, but completely forgetting the name of it. Funny how a fellow Bayo player reminded me the excistence of it. :D
    Great content, great run!

      This is a really great fanmade remake that combines the best elements of all three games into one delightful package. It's really amazing, I can't get enough of it.

    • @BareKnuckleRoo
      @BareKnuckleRoo  3 года назад +2

      I think I'm done with going for No Deaths as Roo, I've done all the 3 main path endings. There's a few offshoot paths I haven't recorded technically but nothing strikes me as being as hard as the elevator fights at the end of SoR1 and SoR2 except for maybe the jungle level with the traps if you go right and trigger the Jet fight. You have to get through that whole section with no health items which is quite scary, but it's only level 6, so it's not as far into the game as the elevator fights are if it goes badly...

    Great run, and the description is as informative as ever! I'm sure you've been asked before, but I'm genuinely curious: what are your thoughts on SoR4 Roo? It's really fascinating to see the different routes SoR Remake and 4 took design wise to modernize him. I'd love to hear the perspective of someone with almost encyclopedic knowledge of the character!
    Either way, hope you've been well, and delayed congrats again on getting these crazy deathless runs on all 3 routes!

    • @BareKnuckleRoo

      Thanks, I appreciate it! SoR Remake mostly fleshes out the moves he was missing that caused him to be deeply flawed. His ability to quickly release from grabs with either his new headbutt or the throw are both really useful, and his strong throw is balanced by the fact that he has no slam attack to use on enemies that can safe land from throws. He's still stuck with awful 0 and 1 star blitzes, and a damaging but short-ranged 2 and 3 star blitz that doesn't have much priority over enemy attacks.
      SoR4 probably took a better route in fleshing him out by improving his range on his basic moves and making him more mobile in the air. You don't play him by just using back attacks a lot of the time which admittedly makes him a bit repetitive in SoR3/SoRR! I'm still saddened that SoR4 didn't do updated sprites for him and just use the SoR3 spritesheet, missed opportunity. :(

      @@BareKnuckleRoo Oh dang, thanks a ton for the quick and detailed response!
      It's a really interesting dichotomy for sure! From what it seems like, the SoRR devs tried to fix Roo by giving him tools he didn't have, like a proper throw/throw release, a stronger 2/3 star blitz, and the ability to use weapons. On the other hand, a lot of his other core toolkit remained mostly how it was in SoR3 if I'm understanding right.
      SoR4 Roo by contrast didn't really give him much extra aside from variations on his Neutral Special in the air (the default one you can control is admittedly almost busted in how strong it can be), and new Star moves. No item holding, no new sprites. On the other hand, his entire core toolset got buffed and polished a lot; Blitz can OTG now making it super useful, Forward Special can multihit airborne targets, heck even neutral jumping attack wallbounces now and is a key part of one of his infinites on bosses in the corner. You can tell they really cared, they just didn't have the resources to do more. Maybe he was even meant to be an SoR4 character at one point.
      I think I agree that SoR4 was the way to go overall, since Roo was always kind of a half-broken character because of how lacking a lot of his core moves were, making you need to rely on back attack stun to get the most out of him. On the other hand, yeah it's really hard to see the awesome new attacks and ability to hold items SoRR had and not think "Dang, I wish they could've done a bit more..."
      It's a shame that SoRR isn't gonna be updated anymore thanks to the C&D, and that SoR4 is probably done with its content patches now, so it's unlikely we'll ever get the best of both worlds on this one.
      Still, it's really cool to see the history on how this character was handled from a design perspective! Stuff like the SoR3 Hard commentary and these videos offering deeper analysis here are pretty invaluable for that, and it's been fascinating watching them.
      I actually haven't gotten the chance to play SoRR yet, and I've been on a SoR kick since I finally finished Mania+ in 4 recently, so I think I'm gonna give it a try!

    • @BareKnuckleRoo
      @BareKnuckleRoo  11 месяцев назад +1

      @@Gemini_Hero Yeah, SoRR's approach is to mostly remain faithful with tweaks here and there to improve things. There aren't too many additions to SoRR actually, with Zan and Roo being the most heavily altered characters. Roo's core combat I suspect may bore a lot of folks as his back attack is crucial to playing well, but having grabs that aren't completely useless is enough to change him from a bottom tier joke character to a top tier boss murdering machine. Without his back attack he's a mediocre character with limited range, iffy 0 and 1 star blitzes, poor jump attacks (weak, jump kick doesn't stay extended), but with such a crazy abusable back attack his otherwise well below average moveset still allows him to tear up the game. It's nuts, I thought he was mid to low tier for a long time in SoRR until I realized how good he was when you figure out the parts you can't back attack through (which aren't many!).
      SoR4's removed his reliance on one move as the core of his moveset and gave him more range on basic punches, so he'll feel less awkward and repetitive for new players. It's very different, but it's necessary to work with the game's juggling system.
      SoRR is arguably the best way to experience the classic games nowadays. It's such an amazing remake, arguably one of the best fanmade projects ever created.

      @@BareKnuckleRoo I just got done with my first few runs through SoRR and WOW, the game is really incredible especially for being a fan project, and having tried SoR2 recently it's absolutely the best way to play the classic games.
      That being said, it was WAY more brutal than I expected it to be. I'm fresh off Mania+ in SoR4 like I mentioned before, and I'm struggling to beat any route of SoRR on Easy mode with 5 lives. I just failed a run of the SoR1 route at Mr. X with SoR2 Axel.
      So many enemies seem to just block or fall out of combos, bosses attack instantly as soon as you're on level, and basically everything outranges your combo starters or has reliable anti-airs. Even attempting to abuse infinites, so many bosses and enemies feel inconsistent to handle at best. At worst they can feel almost impossible to even hit. Picking Roo and abusing the infinite is one of the only reliable ways to finish a run, and even then I take deaths.
      A lot of it might be lack of info on just how to "play" classic SoR, like teching throws being holding up and jump instead of just tapping jump when you're about to land like SoR4. It's fun in its own way, but so much feels so unfair to deal with too. It's a little...conflicting, lol.

    • @BareKnuckleRoo
      @BareKnuckleRoo  11 месяцев назад +1

      SoRR isn't that bad, Mania is quite tough but it's perfectly manageable on Easy and Normal. I suspect it's because you're used to the slower pacing of SoR2 and SoR4 where there's much more hitstun. Enemy AI is balanced here to be closer to how SoR1 and SoR3 worked.
      Check out this set of option settings, I recommend setting the game this way to get the best experience out of it: sorr.forumotion.net/t201-sorr-5-1-options-recommendations
      There's a lot of options and some of them like Pause Delay have a significantly negative impact on how the game feels if you use one that slows it down!

      I like it a lot, it's a great love letter to the series as a whole. :)
      I didn't actually ever think I'd be able to beat it no death, but I'd kept playing for so long that eventually I was beating it with only a couple of deaths on key spots, and realized if I nailed those down I could actually potentially have a no death run on my hands. A couple solid weeks of grinding the elevator fights in SoR1 and 2 route paid off!

      I didn't really play the game with the goal of going for a deathless run. I had just been playing the game for years and enjoying Mania difficulty until the point I realized I had runs with only 2 deaths, often at the elevator, and from there I tried to make thar last push to see if I could get a no death run. There's some other great players who've done deathless runs with Max and I think SoR2 Skate too.

      It's powerful, but the range/priority is fairly short, it has the delay when landing, and he's also got the worst 0 and 1 stars in the game. He's mostly OP because of the tail whip, but that's authentic to SoR3. :P
