I worked for Otari back in the early 2000s just before they went under. The RADAR (which stands for Random Access DigitAl Recorder) was originally a product that was an OEM for Otari by the Canadian firm Creation Technologies. The first generation unit had three built in drives and had a few quirky problems, but sounded GREAT. When the Radar II came along, with its hot-swappable drive bays and improved audio and sync functions, they were amazing. Somewhere in this, CT appeared to have decided that Otari and assisted them in product improvement enough and they were ready to take it back... something that was more or less a major blow to Otari as they didn't have their own product ready for market. With this, they changed the name of the company to IZ Corp and began to market them.
The RADAR was meant to be a direct replacement for the 2" tape machine... turn it on, press play and record, and go... no setup or computer knowledge necessary, so the technology didn't get in the way. At the time, Otari had the very successful 2" machine, the MTR 90 Mk II and Mk III, and they saw the handwriting on the wall for analog machines. However, at that time the technology was changing rapidly... consoles were giving way to control surfaces and tape machines were going the way of the dinosaur. Otari had a very good, and very affordable line of consoles, along with the MTR 90 and then the RADAR, but when CT took it back, things at Otari fell apart quite rapidly as they did for a lot of manufacturers at that time who didn't see the handwriting on the wall.
I always love listening to Daniel Lanois because he's so articulate and musically in tune... and the way that he thinks is very brilliant. I just had to throw in a bit of history about the RADAR so that viewers get where it came from.
One thing that I learned about why it sounds SO GOOD is that the length of the data and clocking buses is no more than a foot long, unlike in digital tape machines that have a lot longer path for the clock and data to travel... plus, the sample clock in the RADAR is one of the CLEANEST ones out there... all in all, the RADAR is arguably the BEST sounding, as well as EASIEST TO USE, digital recorder out there. Thanks again, Warren!!

Yes ... this is an interview in which we actually get to know _Daniel_ a bit more, and not just his work/techniques, etc. I'm putting a good deal of this down to Warren's really calm and collected, friendly way of interviewing people ... even though, underneath it all, he's tripping his noodles at the situation he's in! Having a great guest to talk to is a good bit of it too.
Daniel Lanois is an incredibly talented, spiritual and musically intuitive man and this interview was fascinating. You ask great and thoughtful questions and have a very unobtrusive interviewing style that is rare these days. I thank you.

I met Daniel while he was on tour in the early 90's in Burlington Vermont. I had a gig that night in the same town and couldn't see his show, but out of the blue I got a call from a sound tech friend who said he could introduce me to Daniel. I don't know why this sound tech Quinnie, who I barely knew, thought I was worthy. I flew out the door and manage to meet Daniel in person. For me, It was like meeting a supernatural being. His eyes seems to radiate goodness and kindness, I'm not kidding. Daniel introduced me the band. The vibe in the dressing seemed magical. They were so polite and welcoming, It was a brief meeting, I gave Daniel a cassette demo and a few weeks later I got a nice letter from Daniel saying he liked my music but he was tied up doing projects. Again, who was I kidding. This guy is a musical God! Well, Daniel, when on to give me the names and a few music contacts in L.A. and recommended I send my stuff out to them with his reference. I never followed up. I wanted him. I'm sure Daniel would probably not remember me, but I will always remember him! Gracious would be the word. Warren, thanks for knocking it out of the park again with some of the best content on the internet!

Daniel Lanois is the reason I own a studio. From the first time I saw him on Charlie Rose back when he'd released Acadie and some time after Oh Mercy was released. I was captivated immediately by how he reflected on music making throughout his career. When he and Malcolm Burn played "The Maker" it was my personal "Smells Like Teen Spirit" moment as far as a musical revolution. From there I followed his work continuously until 2010 or so.
In 1997 in a moment of rare boldness I drove from Pasadena to Oxnard to find the theater where I'd heard he was working at the time. I had no idea what I expected to accomplish by finding it. It was a Sunday. Mark Howard was outside under the marque washing a motorcycle. I walked up and started a conversation. I can be an agonizingly shy person with people I respect and admire but somehow I managed to not get chased away with the hose like a stray dog. I knew some records he'd produced himself because I had searched every assistant engineers credits on any of Dan's work. I asked him about a couple of those. Mark went on to invite me into the studio and showed me around all the gear. There were more motorcycles. Dan's amps all sorted to one side, the drum kits, and various keyboards and organs, the giant Neve console (I didn't even know what a "neve" was) in the center. There was a forest of mics that years later I would realize are the prized classics known so well today. Mark went on to play most of the soundtrack to Sling Blade for me some months before the movie was released.
That day changed my life. Some 5 years later I rented a building and I type this sitting at my own, open, creative space studio that I've had for nearly 20 years. I've never met him. Some artists I've worked with have been to his house as dinner guests and such. I even inadvertantly bought a couple wurlitzers from him via a craigslist ad. When I went to check them out in Silverlake I saw the original artwork of For the Beauty of Winona on the wall. I had no idea that this could have been his gear for sale. I asked the kid, Dylan, I think - if this was Dan's house and he confirmed it. When I arrived at the address I thought this might be some rock star's hilltop mansion because it was so secluded and had an amazing gate at the street. I've been to one of his studios, I've been in his house twice and I've never met him. Either way, that episode of Charlie Rose led to that day in Oxnard that changed my life.
Nice story. It's great that Daniel inspired you. I think he's a great artist / musician, I love his own songs the best. An English musician that I admire was asked what recording moments stood out for him and he mentioned recording with Harold Budd at Daniels New Orleans studio. Daniel's a great producer as well. One of his latest recordings is a soundtrack for a video game, Red Dead Redemption 2, which is very good.
I was, born, raised, and currently live in the city Hamilton, Ontario, Canada where Daniel made is musical start. Met his late brother Bob once, who was an outstanding local musician and producer in his own right! Nice to see Daniel representing his hometown wearing that cap, the local professional football team, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats! To say he is a music legend and north star to musicians in this city is a massive understatement! He still has many local friendships he still maintains and visits often, even though his mother and brother, both who still lived here, both sadly have passed the last few years.
I remember a musician friend of mine being very excited back in the mid 70's with the quality of the recording that he and his band had done at this little project studio in Hamilton called the Grant Avenue Studio. For very reasonable bucks, the studio had recorded and mixed 2 songs, then sent them out for mastering and pressing. The band ended up with a big box of great sounding 45 rpm records to sell at gigs. Very cool.
@@sassulusmagnus Yup. The high school I went to the parking lot entrance was off Grant Ave, right next to that house ie Grant Ave Studios. Still an active recording studio to this day as they sold their share of it to their friend/co-founder of the studio Bob Doidge who still runs it.
Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno are absolutely legendary! Being a U2 and Peter Gabriel fan, I love the background information as to how their iconic masterpieces were produced.
PS: I just wish I understood about 80% more of the technical lingo!

@@jules153 As in "record" - so you might "print" reverb effects in your recording (and be committed to it), rather than having it adjustable to the very end via a reverb send in the mixdown.
Daniel is a great guy. I remember running into him on Dundas (near Roncy) here in Toronto a few years ago. I was totally starstruck and he just politely nodded and said, "hello" as if we were old friends.

Daniel has a legendary sensibility- he lends such a unique touch to everything he's involved with. In particular, when I was young my grandfather used to listen to The Joshua Tree quite a bit, and there's an almost synaesthetic element of feeling like many songs and sounds are taking place in these vast, open desert landscapes- the way the pieces work together... combines to make such a transcendental end product. The way that record sounds has always stuck with me- it's record-making at its highest level, seeing every single factor as being integral to the end result. And he brings that same attention to detail to everything he does; absolute gem of a man

Daniel's first solo record ACADIE is permanently loaded in my phone even though I rarely listen to it. It's the only album that has a permanent place there. I feel better just knowing that it is close at hand. A 'desert island disc' for sure. I also love his lesser mentioned efforts with Robbie Robertson and the Neville Brothers. Superb!
Very well done! Daniel reveals so much about the craft. He reminds me of the late Tony Clarke (called the 6th member of the Moody Blues for his mixing and production on their first 7 albums). Both producers seem to have created unique "rooms" with their work, rooms that seem to exist in and of themselves in a strangely familiar, yet foreign, dimension.

Great interview, and always a treat to hear about Dan's process and vision. That said, in your wrap-up you appear to have completely missed what he was saying; he mentioned several times that the gear part of it is irrelevant; yes it's good to have tools and know them well, "be prepared", but most of his most effective ideas seem to be more related to the artists' experience and the best way to pull a unique performance out of them, the gear is just a tool.
Thank you so much Daniel, Warren and Radar for letting us hear this conversation. “Shine” is one of the recordings in my collection I listen to most often… I’m convinced there a many thousands of musicians among us who’ve been inspired, or otherwise influenced, by his work, whether they realize it or not.

I saw Daniel play a small room in an industrial area, in Hamilton, about 6 or 7 years ago. It was an electronic music set. He did play the 10 string steel pedal, & the Les Paul might have made an appearance for a song. Magical night! I was about 5' away from him.

I’ve been a fan for a long time. We always played his music on my family road trips. I always told my kids what an important person he was in music. When my girls were grown up we were together in a small venue in Vienna VA, they got see me sit at the bar with DL having a beer. He was so friendly and generous with his time. What a great guy.

Love this. 20 yrs ago my old songwriting partner and I had this thing where I'd get most of the music in order and he'd do the lyric melody and all I'd give him is the title and he'd come with his thing based on that. Sometimes it worked out great and as a writer he loved this idea.

Hey! I used to work for RADAR (iZ Technologies at the time). I did tech support for all their gear. I actually remember working on recovering a drive of Daniels' that died with a Neil Young guitar solo on it I think. I haven't worked for them in years now, but RADARs were great sounding, bulletproof and reliable machines. I bet there are a lot of them still out there. Good to know they are still around.

Great interview. My greatest takeaway was how he chooses to put the people in the same room. Proximity. Seems like a great way for “blend” in how people play together. What they choose to play, and what they choose not to play. I love his Jolie Louise track. Such an intimate vibe. Discovered it on the Northern Exposure Soundtrack album. Very Organic.

Warren, what wonderful interview with the very gifted Daniel Lanois. Your interview brought out the best of his insight into how he personally, as a musician/producer/engineer works, with the creative energy and vibe of the artist/song/performance to make "a masterpiece" with each recording. I think his message is that as musicians/producers/engineers our duty is to capture and then convey human emotion ( that etherial snapshot) to the best of our ability to our listeners. Our equipment no matter how simple or elaborate are the tools, paints in a paint pallet, that we currently have available to us....so get to know their potential to maximize the creativity of the project. Great interview ! I could listen to Daniel tell stories about famous sessions of yore (great comp title!) all day. Having the session be somewhat of a safe space for the artist to feel open to try new ideas is a great take away as well.

wow warren great interview. It was magical like milk and honey. Everything he said was so articulate and mysterious at the same time grounded and simplistic.
