  • This 1945 fim is the story of a MTB and its crew berthed in Weymouth toward the end of WW2.
By the time the film was complete the war had ended so it did not go on general release .

My uncle Frank Loy was based here after the loss of HMS Barham, he told me they had a shout one night and couldn't find their skipper, he was knocking off the landlady in the painted wagon pub apparently, they also got attacked on their way back to base by the RAF oddly enough, sadly one of his tales was a naval ship docking in the harbour after rescuing others and switched in reverse current over (anti magnetic) and it sucked up a mine resting on the bottom and blew here in half.. RIP Frank I will try keep your memories alive

My grandfather, Frank Black, was a coxswain on a MTB. I think it was 379.

Thanks for this. Always had a soft spot for coastal forces, probably due to my grandad putting them back together after actions like this! That and 'Rover' Reynolds books...

My mother used to recount how she would push me in the pram and see the US troops do beach landings ready for D-day. And a mobile canteen made doughnuts ,one of which made it to my stomach !

The last person alive in theproduction team for this film , John Legard died on 14 Jan 2017. John worked as assitant editor to the director "Mac" McNaughton, Of all the films John worked on while at the Crown Film Unit this was his favourite.

ALAN COLLARD That must be really neat for you! I think this is a great WWII film. Many people don't know that nearly one in ten Canadians were in the service during WWII, which is an astonishingly high percentage, way more than here in the the US. They are incredibly patriotic, and for a peace-loving people they are hard fighters!
Thanks for the information about the film crew as well. They did an important service during the war toward helping boost morale.

Does anyone remember or have any information on the motor torpedo boats that were birthed as house boats in the 1970s at cobb,a quay in pools harbour as I used to spend time on one of them and would love to get some information on what happened to them and even any photographs or history to do with them.

There is no situation, no matter how critical, that cannot be improved by a cup of tea - well know fact!
