There is no scale to zero serverless option for cloud spanner, makes it almost impossible to get started as bootstrapping startup as the costs to run cloud spanner are north of 1,000 usd per month. The scale to zero true serverless pricing model would be welcomed and defo increase adoption for bedroom startups looking to go all out gcp.
Thanks for the feedback Sean! While there's currently no "scale to zero" ability for Spanner, there are some options. Those getting started with Spanner can use the Spanner Emulator for no cost in early stages, as I highlighted in this video. There is also Granular instance sizing to keep costs low when you don't require a large amount of compute capacity. And finally, there are now Committed Use Discounts to provide up to a 40% discount on compute capacity. I'd love to discuss this more on the Google Cloud Slack community if you are interested. @@derekdowney3163 great didn't know about the micro instance pricing, thank you! Do you know if we can use third party ORMs such as Prisma to interface with Cloud Spanner?
@@derekdowney3163 What you've provided in this comment is crucial information for those starting large scale projects - I was desperate to use spanner a couple of years ago for some else's start-up but forms entry too challenging! It would be great if this was the first information the spanner website provides after saying what spanner is and why it's magic!
Don’t forget to check out the Spanner Emulator and report back in the comments below.
Thanks!
Could you please describe the difference between the Spanner and other classical databases?
Hi UnknownHero, thanks for the question! A good starting place to answer this would be this video: ruclips.net/video/bUSU1e9j8wc/видео.html
Great job, Derek!
