The determination of Thames to exist beyond its ITV franchise loss was admirable. The fact that they achieved it and are still going strong (albeit as part of Talkback and Fremantle) is amazing. In today's multichannel arena, the loss of a regional licence probably wouldn't matter half as much. With the same desire to remain broadcasting as they had in 1992, it's highly likely that they'd buy a slot on the Sky platform, or maybe even squeeze into Freeview if they were lucky.
30+ years on and this still makes my blood boil. The incompetence of the ITC and George Russell for taking Thames off the air for a company that promised everything and delivered f**k all.
It’s sad that Philip Elsmore didn’t give himself a name check when he said farewell. Unless he decided not to though his voice is so familiar given he was with Thames from beginning to end.
RIP Thames, and all the former glorious truly Independent franchise holders with their wonderful indents. Thank Thatcher who, in her spite, brought about The Broadcasting Act 1990...and thus began the dumbing down of television in general, the death of ITV and Granada Carlton turning ITV into the pile of crap or is today. I wish I were Culture and Media Secretary of State...I'd repeal the Act, bring back the IBA and certainly refranchise ITV as well as being back Thames....
That is the worst idea ever. ITV could not thrive on that in today's world, The IBA would be useless and unnecessary. And this, no, THIS is the dumbing down of television, full of highbrow crap and pale shit.
A few days time sees the 30th anniversary of Thames' final day as an ITV region and the next day would have seen Carlton Television celebrate 30 years on air.
