- Rice ball is called "Onigiri" in Japanese. Mostly it's shape is triangle and you can either mix ingredients into rice or fill your favorite ingredient in the rice ball, or both!
There are many furikake (rice seasoning) products at Asian grocery stores, so try out and see how you like it done :D
---------------------------------
Onigiri
Difficulty: Very Easy
Time: 3min
Number of servings: 2
Ingredients (2 rice balls)
160g (5.7oz.) cooked white Japanese rice
Furikake (rice seasoning) or filling of your choice
How to Use Furikake:
1. Place cooked rice in a bowl.
2. Mix Furikake of your choice according to the amount written on its package.
3. Wet your hands with water so that the rice won't stick.
4. Place the seasoned rice on your hand.
5. Form the rice into a triangle, round, or cylinder by pressing lightly with your palms.
How to Use Filling:
1. Place cooked rice in a bowl.
2. Wet your hands with water so that the rice won't stick.
3. Place the rice on your hand.
4. Make a hole in the center of the rice and place the filling.
5. Form the rice into a triangle, round, or cylinder by pressing lightly with your palms.
You can wrap your Onigiri with a strip or a sheet of Nori seaweed if you prefer.

the rice i used is regular (not sticky) but regular japanese rice is short grain rice and slightly sticky. hehe
I'm preparing for Bon Odori.
Malaysia sells different types of rice, not sure which is the one. Is there a specific term for Japanese rice?
+鈴木夜神士(Darren) uruchimai
+鈴木夜神士(Darren) there's actually one brand of japanese rice that i found in malaysia tho o/
I believe it's Sumo Rice something
just like the person above me said, i also used sumo rice. bought it at Tesco, IOI City Mall, Putrajaya :)
looking at it made me want to eat them
no. never. you need vinegar for sushi rice. not for rice balls or white rice.
That's a good distinction to know! Thank you!
Never say never. I added just the slightest dash of rice vinegar to my onigiri rice, but it's so little you can barely taste it.
I just want a ball of sweet rice now

aww thank you for liking this. hehe :)
I didn't know you can use your hands to mold the rice into triangular shape 😂😂 I bought mold tool which is I think a waste of money lol
YES! With hands always!!! Mold is very optional that we Japanese seldom use. Of course Daiso (100 yen shops) have one but that is just for fun.
🤦🏻♀️
Imagine not realizing you could mold rice with your hands 🤣🤣
yes. the stickiness depends on the rice you use
Oh, I love onigiri!! I should watch this after working! hehe
Kawaii!!!
Dose putting sugar in it make it more sticky ?
It kinda looked like a happy caterpillar at the end :)
I wish our food network channel here in America had more Japanese cooking, id love to watch someone like you cook and learn tricks on how to make some delicious Japanese food!
Those jelly filled donuts look delicious 😋😋😋

cooking rice is very easy

Oml i so need to cook this!! My mom bought jasmine rice and i'll soon learn to cook this! You got to the point and started cooking in a split second! Your steps were detailed and specific. You also put out different types of rice in case if i wanna try different things! Your a good cook and i support you!
Thank you :) Please use Japanese short-grain rice to make Onigiri. It is slightly sticky, easy to form a ball. Jasmine rice may fall apart, maybe?!
Is Jasmine rice naturally sticky?
Man I'm in love with Japanese Food. I love to eat a lot of Sushi and I want to make and eat Onigiri (Rice Ball) boy I'm in to all this. :-D

you are very welcome 💖
looks so pretty in the end
Onigiri is basically a serving of rice eaten by hand. It goes well with many japanese dish or meal that's eaten with rice like grilled fish, tonkatsu, or curry. My favorite combo is onigiri/rice, tamagoyaki, and nikujaga with a side of miso soup--- all are easy to make and taste awesome with the most basic japanese seasonings.
I just wanted to say.." Thank u" because thanks to your videos my son eats vegetables!! It takes a bit more time in my kitchen to make it. But it's all worth it!
and now, it's done!
I'm up for trying this! 😋😃🍙
i'm so happy to see many people liking this video ;)
I love your tutorials! So easy to follow!
thank you :)
these look soooo good! i hope the local store has this seasoning, id love to try it!

I smiled when i see the smiley face... Awesome tutorial ^^

Was looking for simple onigiri ideas, like okaka and this came up. The smiley face 🍙 always cracks me up. 😆
Onigiri has always been my favourite snack, thanks for the wonderful ideas
I love the music!
The Onigiri seasonings are new to me! In Mexico onigiri is is filled with Philadelphia cheese and sometimes it's covered in panko an deep fried. It is good but I really wanna try these. Thanks for sharing I LOVE your videos!!!
interesting!
I tried making these before I watched your video they really didn't turn out how I wanted them to but now I've seen how you really make them I'm going to try again
And now it’s done! かわいい😆

i have the info in the description box :)
Anime curiosity just made me to watch how to make onigiri hihi
That is so cute it makes me happy!
Making this in my Japanese class tomorrow at school... Looks delicious!
Might as well learn it now then never! Going into highschool in a year and a couple months and I'll need better lunch making skills- lol
(also perk of pretending I'm in an anime teehee-)
Going into a public high school this year, hope my friends there don’t raid my food XD
ive honestly wanted to try onigiri ever since i started watching anime
A. Great version of the song, "A Kind of Hush" :) in the background at the beginning, and B. It's such fun to watch these videos because everyone makes things a little differently and I get new ideas. I'm definitely trying my hand at onigiri soon!
"...but I'm putting a smiley face to make it happy".
The way I giggled 🤭
I shall put a smiley on mine too hihi
Awesome video! I can't believe you're still replying :) Hopefully I can find the seasoning and such in my local store...
New comments are easier to find than comments on new videos. hehe 😉
Is it okay for the rice balls to be just plain and not have any filling?
Absolutely OK!!!
I want to make them plain too But how does it get sticky?? Do you not add sugar or butter?
@@freetobree5323 you can add rice vinegar
Thank you I was about to ask
Thanks for the info@@ochikeron!! 😗
I remember having these in japan. Little old Japanese man shared his lunch with me. Yummy! I miss Okinawa.
I am so hungry after watching that. Looks easy and simple so I will definitely try it.
Omg i love ur music can u tell me the title? And version of the song coz it sounds like what they would play in hotels and 5 star restaurants XD
What if we don't have a Japanese store around to buy the rice seasoning? What are the american equivalents of the seasonings (if there are any)?
GuardGirl0208 usually sesame seed, seaweed and salt should do the trick
You could try buying the seasoning packets online (for example, on Amazon.com). :)
GuardGirl0208 if you can find a world market (a store with stuff from a bunch of countries) you might be able to find it
Every American store has a international section. You should ask your local market.
You could be innovative and use different seasonings you already like or try new ones. Just leaves
I like to make Japanese lunches, and this is perfect!
These came out great thank you🤘🍄🍄🍄
Glad you liked them!
Is anyone here because they watch anime and see them eating rice balls and they look so good?
Yup I was just watching naruto

Anyone know where in the USA to buy this stuff? They don't have it at my grocery store or on Amazon Prime Pantry.
Possibly Wegmans for at least the jarred kind, of course I'm not sure if you have one anywhere near you.
Can you make Onigiri with sushi rice? I went to my Asain market and i couldn't find Japanese rice. All i saw was sushi, jasmine, and some other that i can't remember the name of. :/
sushi rice and the rice i used here is the same ~ the difference is you add the sushi vinegar or not.
