- Originally written and played on the accordion, this weeks #SlowAirSunday features one of my favorite traditional Scottish tunes. The song, Dark Island, was written by David Silver, and the tune was written by Iain MacLachlan, an accordionist who lived in Benbacula island.This was created for a BBC Thriller called the Dark Island, in 1963. The show was filmed mainly in South Uist, but was about Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides. This tune is also known as "Dr Mackay's Farewell to Creagorry" by its composer, Iain MacLachlan.

This music is part of my life's playlist. I first heard it when it was used for the Dark Island radio thriller. I shared it with mother who also loved it. When she found out that she had cancer one of the first things she did was to ask a family member who played the bagpipes to play this at her funeral. Nancy did and as my mum's coffin was taken from the church this haunting tune played, bringing many to tears. Thank you Tress for this heart pulling version. Arohanui (much love) from New Zealand. I pray that you and all those you love come unscathed through these sad times.

Just to set the record straight..the BBC programme was actually made and broadcast in 1962, and it was used as the theme tune Two sets of words were written to it later in 1963. One by David Silver, and one by my father Stewart Ross. The tune dates to c 1958, hence its earlier title, though rumours abounded about earlier origins.

I would like to ask you a few questions
What chanter reed do you play as well as what Drone reeds you use
I use ezdrone Drone Reeds with a Shepherd chanter Reed and I seem to be putting much more effort into my playing to get a good result.
Any help you can offer would be appreciated
Pipes by McCallum with engraved alloy mounts ?
piperbob2 correct!! The engraving is called Victorian scroll and the pipes were made in 2004. They will be my forever set.
@@DarkIsleBagpiper Perfect ! The same as mine, except I opted for the Celtic engraving. I went for the Acetyl version (as I already have a Blackwood set), so no worries about the possibility of their cracking or warping in the future. My other set was made for John D. Burgess (I have a video of this in close-up on RUclips). Keep up the good work, and the best of luck to you !
