Stirrups weren't invented for another century after the time of Commodus. They were invented in China about 300 AD and didn't appear in the west for another 200 years after that. Gorgeous horse, though.
I've never understood why Maximus is all set to kill Commudus, with the broken arrow he picked up off of the ground, and then he backs off when Lucius appears. Why? Was Lucius in his way? Was Maximus worried Lucius could get severely hurt if a battle broke out?

Unlike commudus he only wanted defeat with honor and for his name to have respect even in death
Lucius could have been his son.
