This race marked a turning point in not just American swimming, but swimming in general. After this race, nearly every record in the books started to get taken apart one by one, with some times once thought unachievable becoming basically obsolete. It took 10 years to break 1:31.20, and now breaking the 800 free relay record set just 3 years after this would require an average split of 1:31.26 or better. Schools can now field entire teams of 4 men capable of going the former 10-year old record speed or faster. 3 men have now gone under 1:30 since this, with several other swimmers right behind them. This race blew open the swimming world, and showed people what was possible. It kicked off the swimming renaissance

Actually I think it was Dressel breaking Cielo’s suited 18.47 which happened the day before. He went 18.3 in the morning and then 18.2 twice in the relay and individual in the evening. The 200 free was the next day. Breaking cielos record seemed to be the transition of generations.

Nothing compares to being on the block before a big race. Everyone gets as loud as possible. and then its just quite. Nothing compares to that

tallswede80 "it's excellent that the record belongs to the fourth reich again." Isn't that what your mother said to you?
