I would like to buy one ,crate and all. Now thats Cool still in the crate from Thief River Falls i have 71 Ext 340 but it ain't in no crate, but it does have the chrome tank
This was my first snowmobile...in 1993, but it ran great through deep snow with its cleated 17" wide track. It also ripped down the road at really high speeds, passed my friend's camaro at 140km/h no prob. BUT any warmer than -10Celcius and it would overheat
The prototype used a 440 Hirth free air but the production sleds were Kawasaki. The prototype still exists and it’s in a private collection. According to the owner, AC built seven prototypes for testing mid winter 1970. A couple were styling test mules with no engines. The rest were test machines . The styling shown here was changed on the production machines. The grill wasn’t used and the hood was altered on the production EXTs. Also the engine mount was changed so the Kawasaki twin leaned forward for a lower center of gravity and more ski bite.
Also early on Cat was evaluating several engine manufacturers before finally deciding on Kawasaki. Kawasaki could make enough engines at the cost per unit with the desired hp per displacement and parts support they needed. Cat was selling 90,000 plus sleds a season back then. Hirth made good engines but they were heavy and expensive as compared to Kawasaki and they refused to be an exclusive supplier. Almost Everyone used Hirth at some point except SkiDoo.
Don’t feed the trolls. I don’t think he realized this adds from 53 years ago. His statement makes as much sense as saying a Ferrari can beat a Hudson Hornet.
Those were the days. Nothing was extreme, just good hard riding. 👍👍👍
My Dad being an Arctic Cat dealer from 1969 to 1990. I still have a '71 EXT in the Crate from the Factory. As well as several others still in crates.
