Nice the finally hear 883 knowledgeable, intelligent talk for us veteran long time riders. I have several Harleys but tomorrow I’m picking up the 2022, 883 for a build platform. Good info !
Joe - THANK YOU. So happy you have the Iron back! Watching your videos is nostalgic to me...I started watching your content when you had your 2017...loved all the videos and mods then, and still do. It was your videos that helped me gain the confidence to install the engine guard on my Nightster...you had even given me a shoutout (known as Nightster back then...still have my Sporty Nightster)...thanks again...I'll be staying tuned!
Thanks, bro! I appreciate you sticking around even after I took two very long hiatuses from creating content. It means a ton to me that my hard work on here helped out!
I like the ignition with the coils, I love the tank lift.. I’m gonna do it to mine this year, because it looks good and increases the airflow around the heads
I’m thinking you’re right about the the ignition with the coils. Hey, man, we need to do a video together this spring or summer. Maybe a camping how-to or something similar.
I've really enjoyed this series. When I sold my iron 883 for the low rider s, my main reason was so that I can cover more distance and more comfortably. Now that I have the LRS, I miss the sportster and overcoming challenges and growing as a result of doing something difficult or being more creative within the bikes limitations. Thanks for another great video!
Just got a ton of idea for mods off this - thanks Joe! Not gonna lie, that crunching sound effect was soothing haha 😂. It is crazy how the headlamp cost a fraction compared to the signal lights!
🤣 it took me FOREVER to find the SFX for this video. That crunching is actually wrapping paper unfolding and the clicking for the cost digits is “crackle of corrugated plastic”. Ah, the life of a foley artist.
All classy (and functional) mods! When I traded in my Iron 883 for the Pan Am I had a bunch of aftermarket parts that I hadn't installed yet. I gifted them to the shop if they would help other riders out. I got to meet a young lady that got several of the parts for her bike. I'm sure that a few other riders got some goodies for their Sportsters. I had the shop install the wide heated grips on the TC Bros high handlebars and they were great! Worked better than the heated grips on my Pan Am. Thicker is far better to actually get your finger tips on the grip, where you need the heat. The Pan Am's grips are thinner, like a dirt bike, and they just don't work all the time. I've heard the same about Triumph's heated grips. Looking forward to the videos Joe. The Iron 883 is still one of the Iconically best looking bikes ever!
That’s super cool of you to gift the shop and future riders to enjoy this parts. You’re a good egg! Man, now I’m thinking I want heated grips on this bike! The mod list never ends! 😎
This is going to awesome. I cant wait to watch this. Also, excited to see in depth reviews. Feels like I’m having a flashback to my first time seeing your review of the Memphis Shades which is still on my Indian….Shep
Man, I made that video three weeks after I started this channel. It was probably the fourth or fifth video. I’m super glad you stuck around! Good flashbacks to my first riding year and everything I learned while putting content out there for everyone to watch.
I have a 2009 883 Custom. First mod, V&H exhaust, Second mod, HD Sundowner seat, third mod, mini floorboard pegs, fourth mod, 31 tooth front pulley on the belt for better cruising. This Sportster comes with a large gas tank (4.5g) It's about the most comfortable best cruising Sportster on the planet.
Love everything about the Memphis Shades. Put them on three bikes so far, always love that quick release. Arlen Ness grips is what I just put on my 2016 Indian Scout. They are much better than stock. Looks like you have a great set of mods for your bike. And your video production quality is outstanding (as always).
Thanks Jason! A few years ago I tried a windshield from national cycle. I used it for less than a week then got a Memphis Shades and never looked back.
I put a Memphis shades detachable windshield on my sportster, worth every penny! I also put a saddleman seat on it, i can ride as long as i want without fatigue or soreness.
I bought a del Rio in the darkest shade they offered and found that even though I could see through it my eyes just wouldn't adjust so I was always looking around it instead. So I bought a lighter shade del Rey and I love it. Looks great on my slim and they are so easy to put on and take off. I also went with the FP3 tuner. They are so easy to set up and the app is awesome. Looks like you're gonna be having a ball wrenching on the bike for a while 👍
I almost bought the dark smoke but thought that I might have the same visibility issue. I'm glad I went with the light smoke. That FP3 ain't no joke. Best tuner on the market hands down!
Aloha Joe! Great video man. I suggested to you before, and again now… try up sizing the front sprocket for less rpm and vibration at higher speeds. I think that mod is exactly what you need! And to be honest…. I kinda want to see if it works well for you before I spend my money on the same mod 😜🤪😂. But then again, I just ride in circles here on my island in the middle of the Pacific. Thanks for all the great content and looking forward to more videos of you and that 883! 🤙🏽
Love your build looking forward for future videos I have a suggestion for your bar slip fix go to a local bicycle shop or Amazon and order grip paste for carbon parts bicycle bars seat tube ect...easy and works peace

Deja vu for sure. I once toyed with the idea of switching to forwards and I can definitely see how they would make for a great riding triangle with the stock bars. I don’t think I’ll use forwards anytime soon. I like how much more control I have over bike with mids. I’m flexible with my motorcycling opinion, though, so I may install them or use them on a future bike. Maybe a Street Bob someday.
Stoked bro, just a quick question tho, you said you can only use a Screaming Eagle tuner on the LRS? Is that cuz nobody else has made anything yet or is that cuz HD has made it to expensive for aftermarket companies to crack or something?
HD unfortunately built the ECU for 2021+ for everything except Sportsters so it couldn’t be cracked by aftermarket companies. My understanding is it hasn’t been cracked yet. Vance & Hines still only sells the FP3 for 2018 - 2020 Softail models. So I’m guessing that’s still the case. Hopefully someday they do.
How was it doing long rides with the loud exhaust? I was able to get some Kuryakyn Maverick Crushers for my Scout 20 and they sound and look awesome but I can barely hear the music in my helmet all the way up and after 1/2 an hour it is mind numbing. would be cool to get some quieter slip ons to change out if I was going to do a trip.
For me, the wind noise was WAY louder than the exhaust. I have ridiculously small ears, so most ear plugs fall out of my ears. Which is why I use Shoei helmets. They have the best sound reduction on the market, I think. I had an old Shoei quest for most of the videos on here. Now I have a Hornet X2 and this summer I'll be cruising with an RF-1400.
very cool, as a Iron future wanna be owner, is it possible to add a 2nd disc to the front brakes?? or a bigger tank?? I do not see it in your list. I like, or need a 200 mile range or very close to it on my bikes so that little tank will not do.... thanks for your video, very cool and well done.
It’s possible to put a duel disc setup on iron, but I don’t think it’s really necessary on a Sporty. Larger tanks are a different story. Source a 4.5 gallon tank off of a used 48 or buy a new one from Harley. If you’re serious and have a color in mind, I could help you find one. The only hitch is you would need a different seat than the 883 has, but the aftermarket is flush with great seats.
@@GreatEgret thank you! it is a long term goal, since Harley are so expensive in my country and for me, it would be bike #2 or #3 as my big and expensive bike. BUt I will have one!!!
Awesome video sir! I can’t believe you modded this new sporty the same way as your original, it really shows how much you miss your first iron. Do you still need the original gas cap? If I remember correctly the one that came on this new iron was not working properly
Thanks, man! I bought an OEM gas cap off of eBay the day I bought the Iron. It has a few scratches on it, but nothing too bad. I may design a circular laminated sticker to go on it.
I’m doing the big radius 2 into 2, joker machines air cleaner and FP3 tuner. I like the looks of the big radius, but if you want more torque and power a 2 into is your best bet.
The only thing I don’t like is the fairing. I like the Road Warrior fairing a lot, but would never get it on a Sportster. I don’t think these tall fairings suit the Sportster very well. Of course that doesn’t negate that they do their job pretty well. I have the MS Cafe fairing. People who have it told me it’s pretty good as it takes all the wind away from the chest, and the helmet will move the rest over the head. I think it will be pretty decent when I go on my tours eventually.
Memphis Shades trigger lock mounts are really nice. I just wish they were transferable between styles. The Sport shield mint only fit the del Rey and del rio and the mount used for the road warrior only also fits the Cafe and gauntlet fairings. There are days that I wish I could use the cafe or the road warrior instead of the del Rey, but I have zero interest in swapping mounts that often.

It looks nicer and meaner than the Del Rey. Then you had the option to switch between the Cafe and Gauntlets, which both are mean looking too.

I'm 6'5" and if a lady asks and there is a room of people.... I'm 6'1" because it puts the fear of God into all the guys in the room. And I want to watch the chaos it causes
Yeah, that was suggested a ton when I installed bars a few years ago. I might do it myself actually, but the problem with engraving a bar that doesn’t have the thickness design for it, it will reduce the surface area for the bars to clamp into and causing just the same amount or more slippage. Tack welds seem to be the best option right now.
@@aucklandsadventures not sure about thickness of knurled bars at the mounting point, HD or otherwise. I’ve gotten some good advice from another subscriber who is a machinist. The knurling tool I bought will raise the knurl. Worse that will happen is I’ll suck at it and I’ll need to buy another handlebar.

I cut and built my own brake line after installing the handlebars. Here’s the video in which I do it: ruclips.net/video/zkvi1n1YKc0/видео.html
And here is the full build series:

Nice.
We all should try different bikes when we can, but, if we're lucky, we will find the one which "clicks". Love your channel for you're optimism and mid-western common sense and intelligence, but got to know you through your Route 66 series. What I love is that you treated a motorcycle for what it was always intended to be - a journey of discovery and adventure, not trying to pigeon hole everything. The Iron 883, and, more importantly, what you do with it, speak to your soul.
That really means a ton to me David! Mostly because discovery and adventure is exactly what I’m going for on here. I really appreciate all your comments on here and instagram.
I'm 6'5" and if a lady asks and there is a room of people.... I'm 6'1" because it puts the fear of God into all the guys in the room. And I want to watch the chaos it causes
Hahaha! Perfect!
Love the video man, just got a sporty and was considering alot of the mods you show here. Great to see the break down and why@@GreatEgret
Thanks, man! Have fun with the Sporty! It’s almost as much fun to mod it as it is to ride.
Take those bars to a machine shop and get the knurled marks put in them.
Now I’m going to make myself look wishywashy because I just bought a knurling tool. Video landing sometime in March. 🤘
@@GreatEgret I don’t think it’s going to reduce the diameter enough to matter. Are 1” HD bars thicker at the mount?
@@aucklandsadventures not sure about thickness of knurled bars at the mounting point, HD or otherwise. I’ve gotten some good advice from another subscriber who is a machinist. The knurling tool I bought will raise the knurl. Worse that will happen is I’ll suck at it and I’ll need to buy another handlebar.
@@GreatEgret You have skills and patience. You’ll figure it out.
You never ask how much you'll drop on customizing 883 and 48s 😂😂 cuz you never stop adding shit to it. Ive had both 883 and multiple 48s and let me tell you i spent more time buying and adding parts than riding it😂😂.
True words, my friend.
Do the wire tuck bud…
Done and done! I did it as part of the build series in two parts.

@@GreatEgret Awesome man! I’ll check it out
I’m so sorry, I don’t know how much your mods will cost you, please let me know when you find out, thank you.
Um, I answered this in the video.
all so over priced and made in china I cant turn around without dropping several hundred every month new Harleys are $40 K. nuts. and those bars anyone paying that is rich. I just bought same bars on ebay for $56 and they don't slip a bent tube for over $600 you gonna end up living in the park thats what the wife says when I drop a quarter of that. and she's right ,,,how big is your ego. and that seat is junk hard. thats like calling a brick a pillow. ive also been riding Harleys since 1967 still do. you must be a salesman for this stuff.
😂
