  • Siril 1.2.0-beta1 was just released. Let's check it out! siril.org
    == Notes / Corrections ==
    -On Windows only, there is currently a bug with Starnet - see the easy workaround near the top of the release notes: siril.org/down...
    -With the GHS tool, try picking a symmetry point more towards the right side of the histogram bump after initial stretch as lots of interesting stuff is usually over there to bring out. See the GHS tutorial below for more details.
    -I misspoke in the small section about PCC at the end. You can still platesolve inside PCC, it's just that now you can also platesolve separately with the new process (or even in a different program), and PCC will pick that up from the metadata in the FITS header

    Excellent. I like the ease of Siril. Now it is even better. As you mentioned at the end, you didn't perform some steps like Crop, Color Cal, Background Extraction, Remove Green Noise. Perhaps a Siril Workflow cheat sheet for us entry level guys would help, like a one or two pager. Thanks

      I think the workflow is the "canonical" one that Nico does in the other tutorial, like this one of the Dying Star "ruclips.net/video/flnRjxnXcTI/видео.html" or this one of the Andromeda Galaxy "ruclips.net/video/ambUmZLOeSs/видео.html". These have helped me a lot!

    Camera's are generally more sensitive to green, the red and blue need to be boosted to get a basic whitebalance, when only the green channel is over exposed/clipped the boost in the red and blue channel produces a magenta-ish color, this isn't always noticeable because the highlights generally get compressed but if you apply an algorithm that boosts color in the highlights then the magenta-ish color also gets boosted. Maybe the siril dev's could implement highlight reconstruction like in darktable, it's open source and very effective in fixing over exposed point light sources.

    • @darrenwilliams414

      do a negative transformation remove green noise then negative transformation that will remove the magenta-ish color

    Wow - thanks Nick. I watched other videos about the GHS and never could manage to get it to preform the way I knew it could. Following your walk through changed that. I just reprocessed data from M92. I was trying to not blow out the core, and had even tried two stretches and a layer/blend in GIMP (kind of worked) - but working through it while watching helped tremendously. I am now Team GHS. :)

    I'm loving GHS, Starnet integration and the much-improved deconvolution tool. The only letdown for me is the noise reduction - it just does not work well at all on colour images. (To be fair, the developers acknowledge that in their documentation). If they can solve that and maybe add some masking options in the future, then Siril will have everything I need.

  • @davidforcier4

    Concerning the pink stars, for what I come for my researches, it's related to a mismatch between bit-rate of the source image files and the resulting stacked image. For example, in my case, I do astrophoto with a Nikon camera which provides 14 bits raw files, but PixInsight's and Siril's stacked images are 16 or 32 bits, By consequences, we get a saturated 14 bits color translated into a soft non-saturated 16/32 bits, which results into that pink.

    • @shekibobo

      Very interesting. Any way to fix it?

    • @davidforcier4
      @davidforcier4 Год назад +3

      @@shekibobo Never really found a real fix, but my processing steps allowed me to get around the issue.
      I extract the stars in a separated image while still being in linear mode, and I stretch them just over the point where the pink turn white, but they remains under-stretched compared to the seep-sky image, so they remain smalls. This way has also the benefits to avoid star reduction because under-stretched stars are not as large as the full-stretched ones, so no need to reduce them over :)

    the reason for the pink star cores is the color calibration. It turns white into (bright) pink. With conventional stretching this would be no problem, since the star core gets stretch until its burned out again.

    Just discovered this software, its amazing. im able to remove Coma aberrations, this opens the door for a lot of great fast lenses to become excellent astro lenses. One of the best affordable fast 24mm lenses around is a used Nikkor 24mm f1.4g. It would make an awesome milky way lens but there is some coma aberrations in the corners. That was never a dealbreaker for me on milky way shots since the stars are
    Small, but many people don’t like it. Now you can fix it. I wonder how many other great fast lenses are out there which people have previously overlooked.

    Great tips for how to use GHT. I was playing with the developer version, for awhile but kept going back to v1.06 - your video prompted me to try this new beta, what a difference! First glance two things I checked on - they must have finally recompiled with current Libraw because Siril now supports Olympus/OMDS OM-1 raw files that it never did (YAY!) I'd guess there may be some other newer raw support in there, too. And it looks like they fixed the swap storage problem (at least on MacOS) so it reads the actual free disk space instead of some crazy low number that would cause it to fail processing for lack of space, when there was plenty left. Just keeps getting better!

    If you run each binary from the terminal beforehand, then macOS security will ask you if you allow the binary to run, so it is a good practice to first run the binaries from the terminal to then allow them to run on macOS System Settings, and then set the binaries on Siril, so you'll not have any security warning issues.

    Oh, great: more stuff I can't afford! Yes, the software's free - whoopee - but running it effectively is another matter. So now I can't afford optics, a tube, a mount, or a camera; I also can't afford the monster computer needed to process the images I can't afford to take. (I'm still using a single core desktop PC from 2005 running Windows XP.)
    I can't afford dark skies, either, because that'd mean buying a car to drive umpteen miles out onto the Yorkshire moors [I'm in the cold, wet north of England and can only afford to run a bicycle these days], so what are my stargazing options?
    Well, week after week of back garden cloud-dodging misery is too frustrating for words, so let's hear it for vicarious astronomy. Yay. 🙂 It's the best kind. It involves watching videos from guys like Nico on RUclips. No cost, no discomfort, no hassle. Just brew some tea, open a packet of yummy choccy biccies, sit back and relax...
    The images are always perfect when someone else is taking the time and trouble to create them.😁

      This new Star Recomposition tool in Siril shown in this video basically replaces the need to do this, but if you still want to use pixelmath to blend: 1. stretch (not a huge stretch, just a little) 2. Use Starnet++ to make a starless version 3. Stretch the starless version more 4. open pixelmath and use the formula to combine the stars and starless version. 5. continue editing with the combined version

    Hello Nico. Greetings from Toronto. I just started using Siril, migrating from DSS. I would like to ask you about the stacking process. I am doing manual stacking instead using the scripts. I captured about 165 short subs of 60 seconds with my CCD cmos camera. Siril only stacked 32 of 165. Would you please let me know what is it that I am doing wrong? Your help is greatly appreciated. Clear skies!

    • @NebulaPhotos
      @NebulaPhotos  2 месяца назад

      Are you using the defaults when registering/stacking? It is successfully registering all 165 and it's only when you get to stacking that it's rejecting that many? Have you looked through the subs using the 'frame list' in the sequence tab to see if they look normal or have issues?

    Thanks for demonstrating some of the new features in the updated version of Siril, Nico. Looks like some great improvements! So, unlike PixInsight, Siril is unable to read the embedded plate solving data in FITS files, is that right? (If I'm remembering correctly, the only time you have to use Image Solver in PI is when you're NOT using a FITS file. I could be wrong.) So, is there anything in Siril that you would recommend using in place of the processes in PixInsight, i.e., anything that's easier, more intuitive, or performs better? Thanks again for the update!

    I am a windows user. I installed the command line version of Starnet and pointed Sirl to it. The Starnet star removal window came up with a blue Execute box. I checkboxed "Recompose stars on completion" in addition to the "Generate star mask" that was already check. Siril crashed when I clicked Execute. This happened again three more times. If I do not check that Recompose box, it doesn't crash. However, the resulting file looks identical to what I had, with stars intact. Has anyone had this experience?

  • @fredmercury1314
    @fredmercury1314 Год назад +1

    I installed Siril today and Recompose just crashes Siril, while using Starnet without recompose ticked just results in a single TIF of your current image... and nothing else happens.
    Running Starnet directly in CLI gives me two TIFs, but nasty halos in the starless image :/

    • @NebulaPhotos
      @NebulaPhotos  Год назад +1

      Hi Fred, unfortunately, there seems to be a bug in the Windows build of this new beta version of Siril. There is a workaround posted towards the top of this post: siril.org/download/2023-02-24-siril-1.2.0-beta1/ that you may want to try out.
      For the halos issue, Starnet shouldn’t be creating any halos that weren’t already in your data, but it can make them appear more visible since the stars are removed. Once you add the stars back in they shouldn’t be any more noticeable than they were before, and I actually think they can be much easier to minimize without the stars if you are open to using some tools like clone stamp in photoshop or gimp. Cheers, Nico

      Without a tracker: try high ISO, 3200 or 6400 and time is based on how long until stars trail.
      With a tracker: set ISO at a good balance point of read noise and dynamic range, usually 1600 for Canon. Then increase time until histogram in playback mode is 1/3 over from left.

      1. Make sure you are on the RGB tab at the top

    • @NebulaPhotos
      @NebulaPhotos  Год назад +1

      Yes, it's an alternative. I wouldn't call it a replacement as it doesn't do everything PixInsight does. But if you are new, Siril will give you plenty of options to get started. The things that PixInsight can do that Siril can't are not particularly important for a beginner in my opinion.

      I am starting year 3 in this hobby, and the only non-open source software I use is topaz denoise (although siril now has a denoiser so I might not even use that anymore lol) The point is, yes Pixinsight is the king of astro processing, it's well worth the money if you can afford it. But this open source stuff is getting pretty darn good, and you can produce very respectable images with it. Just remember to kick the guys that wrote it some cash every now and then. They do good work.
