Should I Stop Racing my Demon 170? SELL IT INSTEAD?

  • I give you my thoughts on racing my Demon 170 again after my original engine had to be replaced. Many have told me that they think I should sell the car and cut ties with Dodge and Stellantis altogether. Should I continue to drag race the car after what happened to the engine? Is there a design flaw? What do you think I should do with the car?

Hey, I think you’re a great guy. I really enjoy your channel. Please take no offense to my suggestions. I am a master mechanic. I have built engines. After 500 miles change the oil and filter. Do not even think about racing it until you’ve got at least 1500 miles on it.. at that point change the oil and filter again. If you spend a day at the dragstrip, change the oil and filter each and every time before you go back to race it. Please understand that even though it has been modified to drag race, this is a very extreme hard service use of the vehicle. It wasn’t designed from the ground up to drag race. It has been modified to do that. If you continually race it on a regular basis, the engine and transmission are going to wear at a much higher rate than they normally would, if you were driving it on the street. After about 25,000 miles or sooner of hard use you’re going to have to plan to go through that motor again and possibly the tranny. Plan on it ahead and don’t be surprised. I’m glad for you that you’re having fun with it. That’s what it’s all about.😊

25,000 miles is a good estimate, say if it's driven normally a hemi can last 200-300k of easy miles before the lifter ticking gets unbearable. For example if 10,000 of those 25,000 miles are WOT (driving to the drag strip, and 1/4 mile back down the strip driving slowly), that will wear out the transmission clutches and engine very fast. On the 200-300k engine lets say the person does a wot pull every 10 miles up until highway speeds (~75mph). That should be about half the time down the drag strip with less wear, heat, and easier launch on the drivetrain components. Plus everything has time to cool down with fast flow coolant instead of almost idling after a 1/4 mile pull.

As you have stated and others, everyone has a differing break-in procedure. The newer engines are much newer technology and I feel this definitely affects the break-in process. However, in my humble opinion, the Hellcat, Redeye, Demon, etc. are even vastly more delicate to break-in due to being supercharged. If it were my car, I would not over-rev the engine; I would not put the engine in a 'lug' predicament, etc. Light throttle accelerating and hundreds of heat-cycles. As a 'guide', consider oil changes at 100, 500, and 1,000 miles. Difficult to relate to how many miles when to begin enjoying the car, but as a 'rule of thumb', 1,500+ miles. Then race it. Again, just my opinion. Keep it unless another engine failure in the next year or less; then you might have a case to sell. Best wishes Racer X!

I'm a little surprised that a car that pulls that kind of G forces on launch, that it doesn't have a dry sump oiling system. A front Sump oil pan isn't the best for drag racing, I'm sure it works up to a point after that your going to run into problems with all the oil being forced to the rear of the engine. Losing oil pressure even for a second isn't good. If you look at the drag pack cars they use a rear sump oil pan.

A 4000lb boat needs a 1000+ hp to get it moving.....the biggest issue is the quality of the parts and poor engineering. The oil pan needs some serious baffling/trap doors to keep the oil in place.

If it doesn't trap any faster than before after break in procedure is over, this thing would be up for sale if it was mine . Some of these cars just seem to run much better than others or at least what I have seen. You have the cars that don't seem to trap any higher than mid 140s and the very few that are close to advertised trap speed in the same conditions (60ft and ET aside) because we all know trap speed tells the real story of what a car is capable of.

Does not matter what the "autopsy" says or how many have an issue. There will be no recall. Stellantis spun off Ram and Jeep. Dodge has virtually nothing left after what's on the lot moves. Kuniskis is out. Dodge won't exist in two years and Stallantis will do everything legally possible to avoid any type type of warranty claims. Having Dodge declare bankrupty might be one method for Stellantis to avoid any future finacial resposibilities. I own two SRT products but everything has an end. Good luck with your car and I look forward to seeing you race it and prove to all what the limitations of the car may or may not be. If not you then who else?

Go watch *Uncle Tony's* (Garage) video about the oil pan design and lubrication requirements of the Demon 170 engine. They're all getting oil system warnings.
Short explanation? He's right. Even though it's very well designed, the layout of the car requires a *front sump pan* which would support a 10 second car *all day long...* The problem is, the Demon is built to run in the 8s-9s and the G-forces produced keep the oil pinned right to the back of the engine. Therefore, it can't get enough oil pulled back up front during these balls-out passes. It's just physics, plain and simple and nothing you, the Stelantis engineers or anyone else can do is going to change the laws of physics/nature.
The day they figure out how to make a rear sump system for it, you're good to go! 😊

The guys saying to sell it are the type to go sell a 2024 vehicle as soon as a wheel bearing gives out. Stuff breaks, especially in a high horsepower car. Some of you would have never made it through the golden age of muscle cars of the late 60’s early 70’s if you’re afraid of a warranty backed blown engine. Don’t go throwing big money around on performance oriented vehicles if you’re not willing to take the headache that comes with such power and torque. Racer X was very aware of what he was buying.

Love your channel and I know you were looking forward to getting this car but if I were you I'd cut your losses and sell the car. I wouldn't trust it not to blow up again. Get a different vehicle to make content. Should have bought the Dark Horse, or build a car like an R/T Charger or Challenger. Even a Camaro LT1. What ever you do I'll still be watching.

It's mind numbing to read these comments. This car is a museum piece, it should be filled to the top with oil, battery removed, shrink wrapped and put into safe storage for 25 years. To pay $150,000 for a vehicle with a 1025 hp engine and expect to race it regularly under warranty is the definition of insane.

It also says in the warranty they may not cover racing damage so don't break it again.

The question is..did they replace the engine with one that has the issue fixed? Or just another bad engine that has the same issue? Did you ask the engineers? If you go and race it again will it fail? JS

Yes. Get a salvaged title charger or challenger and put the 426 in there. Throw a few turbos on it and take it from there. Far more entertaining for the channel than a stock 170.

Don't sell it! Anyone who has raced, whether it be in the street or on track, knows things break. In other cars I've owned I've sent rods through blocks, shattered rears and transmission etc etc. It's all part of the game.

That's life brother. You make your company an extra $300K one year and then break a $1000 part the next year, now your just known as the guy that breaks things. People go to great restaurants, have a great time, and say nothing about it. They have one bad experience and post it all over the net and now the place has a bad reputation. Please keep racing that car.... I want to see what happens.

I think Tim Kuniskis bailed because he knew there would be hell raised over the support for all the Hemis, and especially the Demons. I think they're great (and very overpriced) cars, but I would sooner buy a Cobrajet than one of these at this point.

SELL IT!!! As a Challenger scat pack manual widebody owner I can tell you, it doesn't make sense keeping this. Getting something less delicate and stressed (ie no forced induction) that you can drive and enjoy everyday, not a race monster that will continually break. Just not worth the headache. Learn from this lesson, under warranty, and get out while you can.

I dont care what it is that your racing doesnt matter you are out there pushing it beyond its limits the shit is going to break thats part of racing. Fix it and get back on the track

I mean do you love the car? Thats anybodys biggedt question- do you love your car? Is the potential drama worth it? Plus, why all the heartache w/ replacing the engine if not to use the new one? If the replacement engine is still under warranty 100% race it, use it, LOVE it. If it eats itself alive again then you know what to do 😂.
P.s-losing 1 race doesnt mean you cant drive. X can drive-quit hatin.

Race it that’s what it was built for. That will also show if indeed Dodge has built a defective engine.
