I grew up in L.A. and used to live in Venice in the 70's. I remember roller skating on the boardwalk, hanging out in restaurants there, having beach parties on the beach. This looks like a Calcutta slum. I can't believe it, so changed from the Venice I remember so fondly.

It had started to gentrify by then.
Early 90's Venice though, would have been way more dangerous than it is today.People tend to forget that fact.
Fewer homeless back then, but way more serious crime and gang-activity.

I am from New Zealand, but way back in 2006 I stayed in Venice while attending my Yoga Teacher training at Sacred Movement. I stayed at a place called the Cadillac Hotel, which I picked simply because the name made me laugh and the price was right. The walls were thin, and there was a German couple in the room next to me who sure did like to bang a lot. On my first day there, where I was feeling like a stranger in a strange land, just alone, weirded out, and generally unhappy, a little fellow with no legs, lying on a skateboard pushed himself over to me, and said "Are you ok?". The concern in his voice was genuine, and as dumb as it sounds, that one single moment, instantly altered my perspective and mood. I smiled at him, and told him I was fine. That seemed to satisfy him, and he scooted himself away. While I saw plenty of homeless people at Venice, I never once felt threatened, and I felt an odd affinity with them, as if I'd travelled so far just to be with people that I somehow felt connected to in a way I could never hope to explain. I think it came down to this. In Venice, I felt normal, and I've always struggled to find that feeling anywhere else, especially here at home. I will probably never visit Venice again, but I love that place, and there will always be a part of me there. I genuinely hope Venice, and by extention the rest of the U.S. finds a way to heal itself, because it is a country in great pain and with a lot of healing to do, right now. Peace.

It's so sad that so many people in my generation are ignorant enough to think socialism is the answer to this.

Man I live over in Redondo Beach. My wife and I would visit Venice a lot before the pandemic. I can't believe how much it changed just within a year! Sigh. So extremely sad.

Dude, it's so amazing that you took these photos over the years? and are now using them as a reference to show all the deterioration of the area. 😳 A picture, truly, does say a thousands words!!!

This is heartbreaking, it's like watching a bad movie, especially with those strange drone planes. I spent my teens in the 70's and 80's down in Venice constantly, and then in the 90's I would walk my daughters on the boardwalk at least once a week, Harry Perry sang to both my pregnant bellies on the boardwalk... I am so sad for all these people : (

Osprey helicopter, capable of vertical take off, but faster and longer flight times than a helicopter. Only 375 in service, it's rare to see. Probably going down to San Diego. Each one costs 67 million dollars and each flight costs around 10,000. Quite the contrast to urban camper huts.

@@garrettc9456 I am down the coast from Venice and this afternoon, 3 Osprey's hugged the cliff line. I wonder why they are flying so low? Quite a sight to see!

@@teddmccowan4289 in the late 1970s early1980s while in the Marine Corps if military craft flew too low over California like here in this video military base telephones would be ringing off the hook with complaints. The left over hippies back then despised anything military.

So sad yet I'm angered. I just came from watching JOE AND NIC. They were in Amarillo TX, where the downtown has hundreds of buildings that could be converted into apartments for homeless vets, act. The biggest problem we have in California is our weather and the damn influx that invade us from other states. We hear too much OPEN BOARDER crap, when we have THOUSANDS coming here from the EAST of us. Those states need to get their people back! They can deal with the drug abuse and the blight. We've been too easy on everyone. YAKE BACK YOUR HOMELESS.
