The One Tile City Challenge is a classic Cities Skylines 1 challenge with a goal of fitting as many citizens in one tile as possible. This challenge might seem impossible in Cities Skylines 2, since you start with 9 tiles; however I have modified a map to actually start with only one tile.
In today’s video, we’re going to try the challenge with a twist - we only have one hour and actually only have one tile. We’ll be using a modified version of the “Corral Riches" map and will be using "normal" game progression with no mods.
What population do you think we’ll hit?! And can you beat me?! Give it a go and comment your population below!

my raycons suck ass if u ask me lol, they always lose sync, and when listen to both earbuds it cuts out and lose audio. but hey get that check.
i appreciate that you gotta get that bag but raycons are famously pretty shit for price compared to audio quality. Good headphones don't need such massive advertising budgets

A tip I've figured out about the 'Not enough customers' warning. Though that make it sound like it's simply an 'amount of people' issue, it really just indicates that the building is having trouble turning a profit.
In one case that I ran into, every 'Beverages' type commercial district in my city had that warning. Turns out that because I had placed one of the special industrial buildings which caused a massive grain deficit, rising the price of grain to the point where the businesses that required grain couldn't make enough money, and therefore had that somewhat misleading popup on them.
Good job!👍
That is a SUPER tip! I'll check into that the next time I see it!
Great tip! I hope they'll implement a stat or tab in which company make up is mentioned. F.e. 30%grain commercial, 40% mineral commercials 27% wood commercial and so on and so forth. Both for either districts or the entire city commercial sector.
So you are saying a part of the simulation is actually proper working? This is good news indeed!
Did not touch the game for some time for known reasons but this makes me a bit curious to have another look into it.
@@TheExperior I actually think that a lot of the problem with the game is that the simulation IS working, but there are two general problems that make it feel broken.
First and foremost - it is very hard to diagnose issues. In this example, there must be some numbers that indicate how profitable businesses are, but they aren't exposed to the user in any real way.
The second issue is just basic balancing - with the level of complexity with the system and lack of transparency, things not being balanced seem to be both common but not obvious at first glance. Again using this example, I think the fuel plant building uses wayyy too much grain but knowing that it is what is causing the massive grain deficit isn't easy to realize at all with the in game tools.
I would love to see a challenge where it’s a one tile city to begin with, and then after a certain mile stone the city expands but you can’t delete the one tile city. So it’ll create a unique city look where there’s a really jam packed, cyberpunk-like downtown
I was thinking about that too. Seeing some insane density like this sprawling out would be so cool to watch over time.
@@ausmoz Idk how well it’ll work being in the centre since it wouldn’t really be by the coast so water and waste would be a problem. I mean it could work being by the coast but it feels cooler having large sprawl in the middle of the city you know?
Interesting Idea! I think the really interesting part would be seeing how it'd function. I assume it would be fairly disjointed on the whole, but cohesive within each tile.
@@CityPlannerPlays All I can see is that there’s one super easy way we can all find out how well or bad (lol) it will function 😉
@@CityPlannerPlays Would love to see how you handle this since you're always talking about how districts work together and city history. Then again, you've already got tons going on.
Now if you just build low density suburbia around it for miles you have got yourself an american city
And Canadian too! Gotta give our neighbors some props for bad planning as well 🤣

In places like Philippines, Indonesia, India, road is road. No pedestrian lane.. 😒

It would be fun to see a full build like this, where a square is fully built out before unlocking the next one and connect to the previous city
i would love that 🙂🙂

By increasing the electricity budget, you also increase the efficiency of the building, resulting in higher powerproduction per area used. You could also lower the water fee, because you have way more than needed anyways. It increases happienes, company efficiency and the consumption

Best thing about the video? Seeing CPPs intense gamer posture during the ad.
should make multiple 1 tile cities and join them all
This game really needs some high density schools. The normal ones look so out of place in a city since they take up way to much space

This kind of one off content is a really refreshing take, I love it when you put constraints to test your creativity, because you have a LOT to spare!
Inspired from your Sim City 2013 recent play? The size isnt too far off 😝
You're onto me!
@@CityPlannerPlaysIn SC2013, a tile side measures exactly 2048 meters [6719ft], so technically, a tile area is a tad larger than the area of 9 tiles in CS2, as in 3x3 rather than only a single tile.
I've done similar in CS1 and yeah you need to get zones in early so the city can grow while you're laying out the grid.
Its a fun mode to play every now and then. Each time I find little ways to improve.
I love it when you do challenges. It'd be funny to gradually fill in the larger map with these - keep them non-contiguous for as long as possible ( checkerboard?) then the adjoining ones get filled last. Making as few changes as possible to create continuity of highways, services, etc.where they meet up. Gotta plan those ahead of time while piecemeal.
pretty sure the commercial demand is bugged, as it says it's high, but then they complain about not enough customers, which means there should be 0 demand.
Could be. It could also be that it serves the outside world well... but I'm just spitballing. Tbh, I couldn't tell you either way, which is a problem.
I would love to see an entire city built like this. Where you're only allowed to expand when the square is filled and you can't erase previous work outside of a few exceptions like what you did at the start.
Here’s a tip for if you do this again: spam mixed use buildings because they can kill two birds with one stone
Oh man... the way they designed the XP system that you can cheese it like that feels like such a game design oversight. But I applaud the clever use of game mechanics. 😉
Well, it's to encourage growth of the city, granting XP for building roads, gives an incentive to keep expanding the city, otherwise you'd just be sitting around waiting for XP gain from happiness etc.
Look hard enough and you can cheese any system. Plus this is a single player game so how you play is up to you. Devs have much bigger fish to fry with this game.
I understand the intent. It just seems like an oversight that you can spam and then bulldoze buildings for free XP. Though I'm not sure of a solid fix, without completely overhauling to something more similar to the population-based progression that was in the first game.
I mean easy solution would be to not fully refund or provide diminishing returns for each copy of the item placed. The whole system feels like a waste though. In principle I like the idea of things unlocking and providing more as you do things, but the way they implemented it seems so gamified and doesn't fit the tone of a serious simulator they try to present. Building that unlocks a research tree or something would be way better. I actually wish they had buildings that unlocked more game mechanics for progression, or advanced buildings be way more fun and have opertunity to add character to a city. Similar to Sim City 2013 (One of the few things enjoyable about that game was building inteacrions. XP in a city game hurts my soul.
@@ExpedientFalcon nothing fancy needed, just adjust it so that you only earn xp for the first time you plop a building. that encourages using different and more types as well.
Feel you shot yourself i the foot for making most of the grid at a near 45 degree angle to any surface of the tile.
Adding a like for Mr. Cash, I only learned about him when he died and my dad bought a few CDs, but has anyone ever captured the emotion, whimsy, and grit of the West in song before? A Boy Named Sue, Folsom Prison Blues, the best rendition of Ring of Fire, (although it wasn't his creation he perfected it) Hurt, etc, they all wrench your heart like no other country song. Hell, "You Are My Sunshine" was my ex's favorite song because it reminded her of her grandmother before she succumbed to dementia, which both of us had to watch, and it tears me up inside that I couldn't protect the woman I loved from the heartbreak of losing your family.
I feel like CS2 doesn’t have realistic population numbers for Buildings. This lil city square should house 10,000, not 2,000. Doesn’t quite make sense
It's the way the zoning algorithm works, I'd only say like a 6th of the zone was residential at all
It would be awesome to see a followup video where you showcase a few of the top builds (maybe even announce a winner? - just for funz).
I'm really wondering how the rest of the community did this challenge!
As a big TV on the Radio fan myself, here is my appreciation comment for the sense of "engagement".
I actually wanted to plop in a SimCity joke but someone else beat me to it.
SPOILER
The size of one tile in CS2 is 360,000 square meters, or .36 square kilometers/.139 square miles. A population of 2,644 in that area would yield a population density of 7,344 people per square kilometer/19,035 people per square mile. That would be a bit higher if it wasn't counting the slice of the map that was covered by water.
And that’s still nothing compared to Manhattan
Funny enough, I did this math myself! 1.3 million people if we did this across the whole map, give or take!
@@CityPlannerPlays I live in Japan, where the average "low density" suburban city is 10 000 people per square kilometre. (E.g. the "cities" surrounding the Osaka core, such as Toyonaka, Suita, etc., which have their own legal status, but all part f the larger Osaka metropolitan area). They are two-storey housing for the vast majority, plus a few 5-storey or so apartment blocks thrown in (and not a lot of green space).
Given the large number of towers in your build, I surmise the towers aren't exactly full to capacity :-)
Money is so broken in this game... it's like they over corrected for the fact you could struggle for money SOMETIMES in CS1.
Too much money now? Or too little
00's open-world looking map lmao
As much as I love the regular series, I do really enjoy the 1 off videos too. I think you should explore some more creative ideas for videos as 1 offs.
Thank you!! I plan on it! Honestly, these are just really fun to make and low pressure, even if they take a bit to set up sometimes!
@@CityPlannerPlays Yeah, fair enough. I think they're great filler episodes in-between the regular series and they give us the ability to watch some things you might not do in a regular series! Cant wait to see more of them, and I think a lot of us appreciate the work that goes into these videos. Youve got a great community here, so Im sure well love whatever you put out :)
Here is a unique challenge. Call it a variation of the 1 tile city, but it is 9 1 tile cities. So, you get all 9 tiles that you would normally start with, but none of the tiles are adjacent to each other. Each tile you can build in would have to have no less then 9 empty tiles between them, so they are truly spread out from each other.
according to wikipedia, roselle park, NJ has a population of 13,967 and is 1.23 square km with a population of 13,967 making its population density 4,402.2. your 1 tile city is .6 square km with a population of 2,644 for a density of 4,406.7. congrats, you overtake it as the 98th highest density of incorporated places in the US!
to compare relative size of incorporated places, woodlynne, PA has an area of .56 km2 with a density of 5,139.8 and to compare population, east newark, NJ has a pop of 2,594 with a density of 9,723.8.
600m x 600m is only 0.36 square km.
@@nathanmcduck2999 you are correct, the original thumbnail said 600m^2 but he changed it so that threw me off
the density would actually be 7,400 making it the 21st largest incorporated area in the US in between Cudahy, CA and Paterson, NJ.
size wise, it’s comparable to victory gardens, NJ with an area of .38 km^2 but a population of only 1,582
Then you get a city like Male in the Maldives with a population density of 19,000 per square km. Wonder if it is even possible to get something that dense in this game.
It's funny how unrealistic CS2 is when creating a one tile city and onmy having 2600 population when it would most likely be like 10 to 20 thousand people. Gives NYC vibes!
I’m so thankful for ToadieZz cause I’ve been losing my interest into the game and now I got it back😂🎉 This is interesting to watch!

or at least it satisfies that demand and without it won't even spawn in I noticed.
Looks a lot like the central core of Singapore.
In fact, that should be a future project: a small fully-developed tropical island of interconnected cities.
Curious to see what would happen if you focused primarily on high-density, low-cost, low-income citizens. No educations, minimal services, etc.
you should bring back the cats walking song by yotima back that you used to use in your old vids in the outro
I have been putting it in most video and it was in this one up until the very end... a bit of behind the scenes - I had an awkward 30 seconds where I would have either played a random song then cut to Cats Walking or had to swap it. I decided to remove it this time, but it'll be there next time.
Probably more info then you wanted, but since you mentioned it... haha
SimCity 2013 player: "Is it a challange to build in one tile?... you have tiles?" XD

Gotta love seeing a 3 lane one-way instantly turn into 2 lane two-way /s
You should ask the viewers every week which tile to buy connecting the current one, and they have to set you a challenge for that tile to keep it unique, with each district being the name of the challenge!
At 3:40 you build a tiny street in two parts, but the second part is at about 179.5 degrees to it. Now, my only question is: why would you chose to torture us like that?
I have been waiting for this game for a long time! I hope you can give us a lot of videos like the Cities Skylines 2! With story telling! 🎉😊
My problem with the game is how unrealistic the population is in terms of building size.
Just call this the simcity 2013 challenge
Was literally going to be the name, but I didn't want to confuse people, haha!
Bro remade Koowloon city 😭😭
I don't know if this would be possible with the game as it is, but this reminds me of some Minecraft videos I've watched wherein the map is divided into sections, players are given a section and a list of parameters for them to follow, and they build up each section and see how the whole map looks after it's all done. You get to see a lot of creativity and it often comes together in bizarrely beautiful ways.
Would it be possible, I wonder, to do this one tile challenge amongst a group of creators/other players having each of them design their own tiny city, and then somehow drop them together onto one map and see how well it all fits together?
Would be interesting to see you do a series on a one tile city but no using the XP plant thing, but no time limit. See how long it takes to get to this point if ever.
Love the tracks on this vid, especially the AGST. The bpm is a bit higher for a timelapse/challenge vid then the vibes we usually get for Magnolia 😎👍
Glad you enjoyed that! Since the video was so much more frantic and faster, I thought it fit a bit more! Also, I just love AGST and never get to use their tracks, haha!
I vibe to AGST at work too 😊
You should definitely let this run some more and give some updates and fixes for another episode
Not a bad idea!
how about we do a small and short "one tile city" series BUT for the whole map thinking less about attractiveness and more about density as well as profits. just casually spamming high density buildings all around the map just for the sake of gaining maximum population as u can. LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS....
I managed to fit 12k population in my 1-tile city, it took absolutely ages but goes to show what is possible. I believe 15k could be on the table, but will take hours of research.
I got 2,580 on my city, I messed up on getting high rise offices. Thanks For The Install!
I have been playing for a few months (straight) and now I’ve managed to build a hive city with around 40 billion people living in one tile.
It would be kinda cool if this turned into a series - Phil tries to build out from the single square to try and make this single square make sense in a wider city without changing anything in the original square.
I live in the Phoenix area and my kids live in Sedona. Since you’re an expert, we are interested in how you’d fix Sedona’s traffic problems. It’s rough!
I thought about this more then I should have when I was there. The problem is that 89 is the only through street and there are no alternative routes for significant stretches. And those that are they aren't obvious, don't run completely in parallel, and sometimes have different street names for segments or entirely missing blocks. Making things worse, 89 does everything - through traffic, local access, transit, bikes, drives and parking to businesses, and amazing views. It's part highway, part pedestrian area and has a ton of roundabouts with a lot of tourist traffic.
A few fixes, in order of their likeliness
1) Improved signal timing. It seems like a number of the problems are related to signal timing and perhaps a lack of detection. I think improved signal timing could do a long way and would be relatively inexpensive.
2). Access consolidation. This would basically involve reducing the number of driveways and other conflict points on the road. So many shopping centers have unneeded redundant access that provides another place where traffic if gummed up. This would likely improve traffic flow significantly, (though likely at the detriment of pedestrians)
3) improved connectivity. Bluntly, this one is a long shop because of how built up the area is. It would take a lot of political will and likely condemning a house or two to make roadway connections. There could be grade issues and federal land considerations, too.
No easy fixes other then signal timing, tbh. Sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole, but I enjoyed it. Thank you!!
Yeah, it was almost a civil war when the planners put in the round abouts. Not sure there is any political will left! But watching an angry boomer drive his caddy straight through, on purpose, was entertaining!
I think.you should do a Grid only city challenge
Would love to see a video of other people's attempts in the future!

Cities Skylines 2 just wants your entire tile to become nyc 😂
15minute cities, where you don't have to worry about anything, just eat zee bugs and live in the pods.
You really should have done a pedestrian and buke focused city. Absolutely NO reason to need major csr infrastructure or giant carparks in a city that size.

you should do a series where you fill in another tile each episode. would be pretty fun to watch
I’m impressed by the amount of cars and parking needed. The city is 600x600m there is no need to use the car as much as they use it
The game is built around cities being much larger, and when this small is supposed to be low density residential.
LOL funny your doing this challenge after your sim city 2013 video 😂
Such a fun video, great to see you having a good time! 🎉
Thank you! Yeah, I really enjoyed this one!
I've had 2 pairs of raycon and used them for work. the mic is good and they worked fine for about 8 months. then they start having connection problems. such as not going into pairing mode when they are turned on, need to turn them off and back on by holding my finger to the earbud several times before they connect. both times, raycon has refused to cover another pair under warranty. while they are decent, I would not recommend them for the price.
This is what my introduction to Cities: Skylines looked like when I first got started. The goal for me was to utilize the space and maximize the profit. My tiles were filled with tall buildings all over the place
Been there, too, my friend. haha
this city is so tiny it doesn't really need any cars at all, you should've opted for more pedestrian streets so then you could have less people driving and then needed less parking
Just attempted this myself and got 2,369 for my population. Couldn't get high density to light off like I was hoping to but was still a fun way to spend an hour.
I like this episode... I have an idea for this 1 tile challenge... I wonder if you can build a layered city with different elevations starting small and then having the larger stuff on the higher level. Something like fallout shelter...?
Unfortunately this challenge, the way you did it is no longer possible with economy 2.0. the amount of money you get from milestones, with that said I still want to see what I can get out of it without the time limit, since naturally it will now require more time to row through the milestones
Like a general playing checkers, a master of his craft given a tight focus is ever a joy to behold. Bravo!
