    We bought a duplex, live in one unit and rent the other one, saved to buy two more houses on the same street, rented them out also, now we live for free with profit. Our first home was a rental, we bought the house from the landlord without a realtor, made the basement into a 1 bedroom flat, rented it out, sold the home for double and then downsized to the duplex in a cheaper city.

    I have been an on-site property manager for about 12 years. An apartment is included in the job. Before that, I ran the front desk at a resort in Big Sur. Due to it’s isolated location, housing was provided. That’s 20 years free housing so far!

      how did you guys get to work as property managers? at least a bachelors degree and 1 yr experience right?

    • @TamekaGraham
      @TamekaGraham 6 лет назад +25

      @@greenparadise2 - A bachelor degree is not required. We had no experience so they provided full training. Companies usually hire teams (husband/wife, boyfriend/girlfriend, Siblings, etc). To get your foot in the door you could start as an assistant manager part time or full time which does not come with a house. Do that for a while till a position opens up as an onsite property manager. Self storage is a very mom and pop industry with a few bigger companies like EZ Storage or UHaul. We worked for a mid-sized regional and it was a great experience. We did that for 7 years. Besides the salary and the free house, we were able to make extra money by selling items tenants left behind on Craigslist. We were newlyweds so we furnished our whole house almost free with items that tenants gave us or left behind. There are many hidden perks.

    I'm a single dad and have begun my stage into investing into real estate and going hard into investing. One of the things that worry me about house hacking is exactly what you said at the beginning. I have a little kid so even if i have good tenants it would worry me living with other people. I have a plan of buying a fixer upper and living in it for a couple of years. Then renting it out and doing it all over again. To start I'm looking at getting a 3 or 4 bedroom, but you guys gave me the idea to down size for my next house to get it even cheaper. So that sounds like a plan

    I have a couple ideas for future videos if you continue from Portugal. I would love to add an itty bitty house to our side yard and rent out either the itty bitty or the main house. Would you consider guiding us through the process and use us as the subject of your video? Just an idea. I think we can do it but would like the support and you two seem very creative and practical. Another idea, how to navigate the remodeling process with currently owned str properties. I need to update one and cannot afford to do it. I also cannot lift heavy things due to a health problem. I believe there are clever ways to get the job done if the owner is not personally able to do it? You could again use me as your subject or someone like me. Thank you guys! I was a manager in an apartment complex in college and put myself through school that way. You have to be creative!

    We bought a fixer-upper in a great neighborhood with the same intent. Only life happened and my husband started working 80hrs per week and I fell pregnant with our 3rd child. We ended up hiring contractors to do the work, since we could not live in that environment with a new baby. Ended up costing us a fortune! And now selling the house since we are not living in the country and the rent is covering only about half our expenses. It is a huge house(3000sqft), so upkeep is taking even more of our rental income. But we are lucky that my husband's new employers pay our rent, we just do the utilities at about $100/mo.

    When we were first married, we owned a duplex on a busy street, but in a very desirable neighborhood. We rented out the apartment downstairs, the garage to someone in the building next door, and a spare bedroom to foreign students who wanted to live with native English speakers. I used to joke that If someone would’ve paid me to pitch a tent on the back porch, I would’ve let them. Lol. It really was a great way to live mortgage free. We flipped that house into a larger home for our family when we had kids, although, I must admit, I wish we had held onto it!

    I would add to this : if you are eligible for low income or social housing opportunities, an even if you think you are mot, doublecheck. It never hurts to be on the list and what is usually 30% if your income could be changed to a better percentage based on your annual revenue. I would also add "think outside the box" literally and consider mobile, nautical and tiny house options. Lastly one thing unfortunately not mentioned here - a lot of people have no access to capital investing or loans for a house in the first place, so this lovely couple were lucky to be able to make those investments in the first place.

    How were you able to find jobs abroad that paid your rent? I’m interested in a video with those resources. Thanks for the great tips.

    Talk about a Powe Couple, you guys clearly need to be on the same page which is part of your success. Can you talk about how you guys came to be like this, did one person have to convince the other?? It sounds horrible to say but you make it all sound so easy, can you share your evolution story : )

    Hello guys! This video is a little older so I’m not sure if you will see my question. What are your thoughts on buying a trailer to live in or an Airstream? Would love your advice as a young newly wed couple looking to invest else where while living in California .

    • @OurRichJourney
      @OurRichJourney  5 лет назад +1

      Great question! We like the idea if your goal is to be mobile or travel around your country. But if you're doing it to save cost than you should run the numbers. We've found that there isn't much of saving between buying an airstream vs renting a small apartment or house. After you take into account the cost of the trailer, maintenance, cost to rent a space to park it, disposal fees, etc...it can be as much or more as renting an apartment. So it all depends on your goal and the numbers. Thanks for the question and congrats on starting your FI journey!

    Nu only question; if you retire you will need a house and there is no company left to pay it for you. Or will you sell the big condo and buy a smaller one back

    I PCS to SD from Rota next year, thus living rent free. People suggest using my VA loan to buy a place. My BAH (single, no dependents) will be $3400+. Not sure about renting it out when I PCS. Do condos sell quickly in SD? Ultimately I want to retire in Portugal. ☺. LOVE your content!

      They have said several times they don't share the name of the employers and that would not be wise. They provided the general type of work they each do.

      I used my 401k for a 20% down payment on my condo. Rents for a apartment here in San Diego, were getting to the point where I couldn't afford it. Now my mortgage with HOA is about $200 less than what I was paying in rent.

    Just started washing you today, leaving rent and mortgage free is always needed a saved money to invest, so after you can do all these. I allways say is good to start save for our kids once they are 20 they can investe in a house and do these things. Saving is the key.
