  • In 2007, Rich Briggs and students built the Sasukenei wood kiln from the plans in the book "Japanese Wood-Fired Ceramics" by Kusakabe Masakazu and Marc Lancet. This video chronicles the construction process.

    Looks great! However, I do have one negative observation: Constructing a wood (or gas or oil, etc) burning kiln under and in such close proximity to a wood structure seems to be inherently unsafe as a fire hazard.

    All that effort for what? Trying to pass off some misunderstood Japanese aesthetic as art? Telling the kids that mistakes are actually wonderful examples of serendipity? Ooo, that ash created such wonderful colors and effects. Not.
