John, heavily in debt, muddles his way from behind to get in an advantageous position and stab our hero Kathy in the back whilst she is in the middle of liberating a town. John proceeds to take the town, then pimp slap Kathy while she's down and takes another of her towns. Next turn Roche kindly pays off his debt. Everything is coming up Johnhouse. (Weber even repossesses a different cursed item he gave John, in the process, as well) Almost immediately after (since Kathy bribed the angels), John attempts to take down the story boss, and Kathy hits him with field magic for 1/3 his life in the process. John Fails and loses the town he fought Kathy over. Kathy then takes the town John was fighting for. And the next story mob that spawned was on the town John had taken from Kathy. Then shortly after that, John runs afoul of the US healthcare system, winding up in twice as much debt as he had been when the session started And John ends the day gambling on the street corner and going 30k deeper in debt. So John ends the play session having lost everything he worked this session to gain along with all his items and money due to bad investments and medical debt. Literally no towns gained, 100k in debt (from 35-40k), and empty bags. Also, bets on when he notices that towns have multiple pages when using the bank? Those poor first continents are getting taxed so heavily. They can't grow their GDP

I haven't spoken about Weber much yet, in part because there's so much to discuss with Kathy's character, but also because I think he's more of a Sarumon subvillain than a main Sauron villain (we've seen the demon prince, for instance, which seems to foreshadow an evil royal bloodline). Still, I cannot deny his role as a main antagonist in most of this narrative thus far. Sometimes what we see in antagonists when the hero grows stronger is that they either (1) also grow more powerful or (2) change their strategy. In Weber's case, I believe he has employed the second method. Instead of directly pumping evil magic into our main characters--which we can see that Kathy is now able to deal with in her holiest incarnation--it seems like Weber has set his sights on the morally and mentally weakest of the group, John. In this chapter, he repeatedly torments the already-broken John and tears him down until he has so little humanity that he shockingly betrays and attacks Kathy after they defeat the Incubus together. At this rate, John may soon lose his humanity entirely and become some kind of... vagrant bottom-feeder maybe? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Frankly, while people are apt to discuss John's constant stumbles to downfall or, in parallel, Kathy's constant rise to greatness, Gabby's post-Darklingdom choices (as in, trying to imitate the two players with an actual chance at winning) are what entertain me, as someone who's caught up to the manga. It's as if she's building her own identity based on those around her to try to keep up and, as the last volume shows, that's proven successful.
As funny as it would be to join the Kathy train, the game is ABSOLUTELY cheating with her spinner. She always, always, ALWAYS gets the spinner roll she wants. It's uncanny and very suspicious, and I could never get behind a hero who cheats like that
