The best way to release these fish is with a down weight. You can buy them or make one from a large snapper sinker and barbless hook. You should do another vid showing people this so that the fishery can be sustained as best possible. These fish, particularly in the Brisbane River with the deeper water, do not release well using your methodology. Other than that, it’s a great vid and knowledge share. Well done
I live near the river and my son and I have bought ourselves a little boat for fishing the river. I have been around boats for most of my life but never used them for fishing so even though I love and know the water well, I am a hopeless fisherman. And I mean NOT GOOD AT ALL. We have been trying to catch some Jew or Threadfin but have had no luck. You showing us what you use from your rod through to the hooks has been very useful for us. We have been using way to thick line and by the time we get the rig to the bottom, the tide has picked it up so skipping it along the bottom has not been available. So far with what we have been using, we have only got a couple of under size jew. Ill let you know how we go next time out set up the way you showed. cheers big ears.
We caught one up in cairns city .. live mullet does the trick. Don’t have your drag to tight and I found let it have a little nibble then hook it. Never caught one in Brisbane but it’s my goal cause they have a unique pull on them such a. Great feeling when you get own
Mate this might be a rookie question... but you say to fish the bottom metre of the column, but every time you flick off the bottom you wind in a bit... wouldn't you be above the bottom metre after only a few flicks? Or do you drop it down every few retrieves?
I’m just winding in the slack line mate. I like to keep a bit of tension on the sink, which makes it easier to feel and see if you get a bite by feeling and physically watching your line. Because we were sitting still spot locked I was winding up the slack. If I was drifting along at the same speed I wouldn’t really have to wind if I wanted to keep my lure down there 👍🏻
Basically, if you don’t have a good sounder with sides-scan and electric motor with spot lock, you’re hopes of finding and catching a Thready are very slim? 😩 Live bait would be the only option I’d assume. I’m still yet to have my shot, caught some very decent Jews though in the river.

Mate should you vent them and use a down weight..or just use a down weight without venting?
This is just the kind of video I was looking for hoping to get onto a thready 🎣
Thanks mate... that's the inspiration I need to go give the river mouth another go.
Did we meet briefly in the Brisy River a couple of weeks ago I was in the Skeeter you shared some knowledge and tips on threadfin .

What time of the year is best for fishing for threadies in the port bowly
All year round mate, but I’ve liked winter in the past.
Hey mate, what sounder is that ?
Hey bud, it’s a lowrance HDS live
Fck yeah...

It’s just harder to find them mate. Doesn’t mean you can’t catch them. Spending enough time fishing the structure will produce fish.
Bowly's Fishing Yeah true it is a lot harder, you just have to hit jetty after jetty trying to find some, I’m still trying to find them 😂
