    Even though I don't have this specific light, I honestly could not make heads or tails out of the porch light instructions for what I purchased---and I have replaced a few different porch lights. Every part you explained I could find the matching equivalent with my light. THANK YOU SO, SO MUCH !

    I have had issues with these lights that I bought from Costco. After a few days/weeks, it goes out. I watched your video and everything that we did in installation is exactly as you described. The power supply isn't an issue either. I keep thinking it could be a bad batch, but reading reviews online on Amazon, doesn't give me much hope.

    Note: When they stop working, and they will. You can buy individual parts, BUT, you can buy a LED Retrofit kit from LED Supply for $38.00 delivered (there may be other places). When I did my last one, the Driver and the photocell were both shot, and this kit saved the day. It comes with the photocell, the LED driver, and the LED lights and instructions. Easy to do.

    well the lights I bought although the same exact design, they came in a green box intead of the maroon box you show, also mine had four LED lights, the newer ones I noticed came in the maroon box and have one LED light in the center. Hopefully they rectified the problem with the new lights. Wish you good luck and please keep us updated. by the way the metal bracket that hold the lights were made with cheap metal that the screws stripped easily so I ended up using the old brackets.

    Sometimes a previous person may have installed the light switch by incorrectly using the neutral white wire in the switch. That would leave the black hot wire intact even with the switch in the off position and you might provide the ground while fiddling with the light. Not good, that’s why it is important to throw the circuit breaker. Also, invest a few dollars in a decent sniffer, a small pen like device that can detect live wiring without needing to remove the insulation on the wires. That will help protect you in case the wrong circuit was shut off. Hey, it happens! Don’t ask.

    I installed similar porch lights yesterday. When I tested the first one it worked so I installed the 2nd one, now neither of them work. These were hand me downs so I don't have the instructions. The first one had a circular bracket on the inside to hold it to the wall. The 2nd one was with out the circular bracket so I was able to use 2 cross bars to make it fit. I screwed the grounding wire to the ground wire screw and used the caps to hold the white and black wires together. I also put electrical tape over them. Not sure why they don't work now, unless on the 2nd light the wall wire seamed to be a heavier type, it had 2 white and 2 black wires. I connected these 2 plus the one from the light together. would this have the cause? I hope to finish this today. thankyou Rachel

    • @AdamDIY
      @AdamDIY  9 лет назад

      +barbara rachel Dart It's possible that it's a bad wire connection. I do that sometimes as it's easy for a wire to move when tightening the wire nuts. Also, don't forget these have light sensors so if it is bright outside it will not turn on.

  • @Mume729
    @Mume729 8 лет назад

    Instructions for my porch light state "attach black to black wire, white to white and ground to ground." However, my current connection is white to black and black to white with ground connected to the junction box. What do I do in this situation?

    • @AdamDIY
      @AdamDIY  8 лет назад +1

      +Mume729 The person who installed the first fixture probably didn't care. A lot of electronics will work just fine with white and black reversed. But when you are installing anything always connect the same colors. White (neutral) to white, black (hot) to black, and green (ground) to the green or bare copper wire. Sometimes the ground is connected to the metal frame of the fixture. Here is a paragraph I looked up to explain in more detail:
      In the standard 110 volt plug or receptacle there are three wires. One is called HOT. This is the ( Black) wire that carries the electrical potential. There is another wire called Common or Neutral ( White). This wire carries the return current back to the system supply. Now there is a Green wire called Ground. This wire is physically attached to the appliance case and to the earth at the power pole and is continued through the electrical boxes. When there is a short circuit the current should be fed to earth ground to absorb the current and cause a fuse to open up. If you are holding the appliance and there is no connection between the appliance and ground when there is a short circuit then you become the connection. So never cut off ground pin on a plug. When there were two wire circuits the Neutral was connected to earth and it still is at the Main circuit breaker panel only.

    Changing LEDs. I have about 20 of these fixtures and have started having them fail. Its just a little over 3 years since we put them in of course. Is there any way to replace the LED's. Looks like they would have to be taken apart.

    • @AdamDIY
      @AdamDIY  9 лет назад

      They are not hard to take apart but getting replacement parts could be difficult. It just depends on the manufacturer and if they care enough to back up the product. If you contact them let me know how it goes so others reading this can also benefit. How many went bad and are they all doing the same thing? So far all 7 of mine work perfectly.

    the instructions say not to be used with timer. can i just tape over the photo cell and leave my timer to turn the light on or off?

    • @Guillotines_For_Globalists
      @Guillotines_For_Globalists 7 лет назад

      I don't see why the timer would be an issue as long as it does not dim the lights for the initial on and off. The timer should only give constant steady power to the lights, or not.....just like with a flip switch, which these are obviously compatible with.

    • @rickmorenojr
      @rickmorenojr 6 лет назад

      A better solution would be to simply bypass the photo cell. First turn off the power to the light(s). Start by removing the glass diffuser (the two screws), then remove the three small screws that hold the aluminum disk/reflector. Now your able to access all the wiring. Simply remove the single wire nut connecting the black current driver wire to the red photo cell wire. Notice that there's a single black wire that goes from the house power all the way to the photo cell. Cut that black wire leading to the photo cell about half way. Strip the end of the black wire that goes to the house power, about 3/8-1/2 inch, and re-connect it to the black wire of the constant current driver with the wire nut. You can safely ignore the red and black wires to the photo cell (leave them disconnected). Re-assemble in reverse order.

    My husband and I tried to install these fixtures on a 25 year old house. The brackets have to go horizontal which results in the screws that hold the fixture not being able to go in far enough to hide the screw on the outside. The video shows the bracket being installed on the diagonal which, of course, would solve my problem. The front of our house is stone which prevents easily replacing the electrical box. The only solution we can think of is to get shorter screw or to file off some of the "ear" where the bracket is screwed on (so the screw will clear it). Any suggestions?

    • @eyeheartsushi2212
      @eyeheartsushi2212 9 лет назад

      Hi, Mary. Seeing that your comment is 4 months old you might have solved your problem, but I still found it interesting because I ran into the same situation when installing my light fixture. There is a round bracket sold at Home Depot (or similar store) that gives you more mounting options than the bracket that comes with this light fixture. That's how I installed mine. Anyway, hope it worked out for you either way.

    • @AdamDIY
      @AdamDIY  8 лет назад

      +Erika Conn Easy? No. But you can, and if you have attic access it is a lot easier. If you do not have attic access you will have to cut open the drywall and then repair it after you run the new wires. There are a few ways to do what you are asking. You may want to get the advice of an electrician. If I were doing this project I might just leave the ceiling light where it is but tap into the box and run a new wire down the inside of the wall (attic access) Then add the new box.

    Are the altair lights dimmable I meant on the front of your house?, They look great

      I don't have a dimmer on them but my led recessed inside lights I installed have a dimmer and they work. But they don't dim and smoothly as regular incandescent bulbs.

      It's probably the constant current driver, a $6.44 part to replace ruclips.net/video/de9pA0WyFe8/видео.html

    How have these held up? I just installed them on my house and am very happy with them; however, I have read some horrible reviews of their customer service and durability.

      I installed 7 of these all around my house and they have all been working perfectly for 3 months now. I can't say anything about customer service because I never needed it. Reviews can be a scary thing. I think most times reviews will lean negative because people who's product works fine usually don't think about it anymore and don't have and drive to do a review, where as when you have a bad time with a product your more likely to want to vent. I'll comment again if one of these burns out, but so far I am very happy.

    Hey Adam, I have the Costco Adair 917884 porch lanterns. LED light on one of them just started to flicker on and off continually. It goes off during daylight and flickers at night. Is it the white box connected to the top inside the unit and can it be replaced?

    Do you ever have any problems with it flashing? Mine does like a strobe light sometimes and I have to turn it off and try turning it back on a different time. Do you have any suggestions on what might be causing that? It's very frustrating. Thanks.

      It sounds like just enough light is hitting the sensor to make it flicker. Did you try covering the sensor with your hand or tape when it's flickering to see if it stops?

    • @dwarfmallow

      That's what I thought might have been the problem, but it's not.

      Ashley Rodriguez It could be a loose wire or faulty sensor.

      Yea I'm thinking of an issue with the sensor. Thank you.

    I love the look of these lights but I'm installing them on each side of my garage door and want to find a ceiling light to match over my front door. Has anyone come across something similar?
