Wow!! I haven't heard Ladell Abrams in a long time. He had one of the best sounding snare drums, especially on John Kee's Stand album. Does anyone know what is the most recent album he is on?
I've been following Calvin's playing since his early days with Ricky Dillard and playing for Ramsey Lewis and the Urban Knights. He is definitely the best gospel drummer today. I think his style has changed somewhat. I don't think that he any less explosive now than he was back then. His choice and placement of drum fills has matured a lot. Calvin plays according to the style of music he is playing. Perfect example is the jazz group he played for versus him playing for John P Kee.
I'm black and I'm from Va. Obviously, you have your own unique opinions and you're firmly set within them. Like I said before, some of these artists DO have issues, BUT it's not my place (or yours) to expose and bash them, especially being that all of them aren't crooked. In the Word, Jesus said let the wheat (good) and the tares (bad) grow together and when the harvest comes, HE'LL do the seperating. Doing this yourself will get you in trouble with God, even if you're right. It's God's right...

Pure hatin...Calvin is on just about everyone's album...major and minor labels. His reputation precedes him and unfortunately, so does yours. You just go around and bash Calvin on his RUclips clips. Sput didn't "own" or "out-play" him. Calvin stayed in the pocket, I listen to that album frequently. You get no respect by hating on someone. If Calvin sucked, he wouldn't be getting gig after gig after gig. Take your hating somewhere else........

That dude couldnt get a gig outside of playin for his dad!!..Aaron Spears plays some gospel, gideon band, but he mainly plays secular music. I'm not even gonna mention the others..their all excellent drummers but Calvin Rodgers gets the most jobs hands down. That cant b argued... no other drummer in gospel plays on more albums than Calvin! Simply bcuz his style is chameleon like. thats why he gets HIRED THE MOST!!!
He is not the best gospel drummer today. You have: Aaron Spears, Marvin McQuitty, Chris Kee, Chris Dave, Calvin Napper, Sheryl Harper, Jeremy Haynes, LaDell Abrams, and the greatest one of the all: Robert "Sput" Searight. Check out Kim Burrel's live recording. Sput owned Calvin the whole record. As a matter of fact, one of the board players on the project shedded with Calvin and ate his lunch.
