Tara practice, particularly Green Tara, is often classified under Kriya Tantra, which is one of the three divisions of Lower Tantra in Tibetan Buddhism. This classification is based on several key characteristics that align with the principles and methods of Lower Tantra:
Emphasis on Ritual and Devotion: Kriya Tantra places a significant focus on external ritual practices, physical cleanliness, and devotional activities. Tara practice involves performing rituals, making offerings, and reciting mantras, which are characteristic of Kriya Tantra.
Purification and Protection: The primary goals of Kriya Tantra practices, including Tara practice, are to purify negative karma, remove obstacles, and invoke protection. Tara, especially Green Tara, is revered for her ability to swiftly alleviate fears and obstacles, which aligns with the aims of Kriya Tantra.
