    Got mine when I helped my friend move her giant one to Staten Isand. The deal was I keep anything that falls off. Propagates like a champ and now I'm giving them away like I'm Oprah!

    I have a huge one of these, which is very lush and grows like crazy in the shadow of a north window where from November to February the temperature is usually around 5 degrees Celcius, though in January it often drops to 0 degrees for a few weeks, which doesn't bother it as it flowers like crazy every January. I don't water it at all from October to early March and this is why it survives the cold.

      Great tidbits of information here. Didn't realize it can handle such cold temperatures!

    Another theory is that these plants were in what is now N. America, S. America, Africa and S. Asia when the land was 1 combined continent. The continents moved, not the plants. There is some DNA evidence to back this theory. Anyway, this is the only cacti considered to be native to more than just the Americas.

    The suspense is too much for me to handle at this point! Please tell me (us) what happens 239 days from now!? Does the series just end? on day 240 will it just be radio silence!? There has to be more plants to feature. I'm making myself sick with the thought of the approaching unknown... 😰

    Thanks for posting. I've got one of these on the top of my bookshelf drooping down the sides, looking really good. But it has recently been dropping lots of small bits on the floor, which I thought was a problem, so when I saw this video I immediately watch hoping I might be able to find out what the problem was. I didn't even know what it was called, otherwise I'd have looked it up, so even knowing the name is a good start!
    Clearly, I was wrong to think it was a problem and what I should have been doing was using the bits that fell off to propagate more! Glad that's sorted then! :-) Most appreciative of the video.

    This is an amazing cacti, I have two Rhipsalis and love them so much, and whenever I run into another one I scoop it up because they are so unique, the oldest Rhipsalis I have is over 15 years old and started tiny and is at least three or four times it's starting size.Thanks again Summer for this series, loving everyday of it!

    Hey! Gorgeous plants, all of them ❤️ can you recommend me something bark-y that I could purchase on amazon in Canada?! I was using miracle grow but 1, not only are all their products essentially indoor potting mix just in different bags (the sphagnum moss was exactly the same as their potting soil) but they always come with fungus gnats now, lots of fungus gnats. But I’m looking for some soil medium to transplant my mistletoe cactus cuttings to and I’d love your advice!

    • @dressmaking
      @dressmaking 4 года назад

      Orchid bark is a wonderful soil amendment to keep on hand. I would highly recommend making your own soil mix. I was intimidated by the idea for ages and then I tried it and it's really easy and my plants are thriving.
      I purchased coco coir, worm castings, and cactus pumice off eBay and I mix them in a 2:1:1 ratio for most of my plants. For a plant like rhipsalis, I would double the amount of pumice and also add a scoop or 2 of orchid bark. There are lots of great videos and soil recipes online but it's fairly simple. The best part is no fungus gnats!

    I have what I think...thought...was a mistletoe cactus but mine has some parts if it that are hairy/pokey and some parts that are slick with no hairs, maybe a different kind of rhipsalis?

    • @summerrayneoakes
      @summerrayneoakes  5 лет назад

      Likely. This one is smooth. Maybe a Pilocarpa? Or could be another. There aren't that many species. And some are now being hybridized too.

    I have this Rhipsalis in my kitchen, hanging in my window, which gets some afternoon sun...not bright light. Like you, I water it every other week...a good watering. It's doing great. It's a good size (already big when I bought it at Home Depot a few years ago)...and it's growing nicely. It's one of my favorite plants. Thanks, Summer.

    Hey Summer, Do you have any advice? We have hit the heat of summer here in Australia, I was wondering if you can help as my beautiful plant (which ive had almost a year is going through its first summer) is now starting to get alot hard brown sections on the tendrils (alot from the top). Does that mean I need to water it more or is it possible root rot? not sure which way to go as both ways haven't helped.

    I don't get why it's cheating to buy a developed plant instead of starting with a cutting or seeds.

    • @summerrayneoakes
      @summerrayneoakes  5 лет назад +8

      Well, I just want to be realistic. I don't want people to think it got that big growing it indoors for a small amount of time. If I remember, I try to share how long I've been growing the plant, etc. in the conditions that I'm growing it in, so that people get a sense as to what it looks like and what they can learn from it...

    I have a similar plant, which I’d previously misidentified as R.Baciffera, however once I moved it to a higher light window, it started producing leaves all over. I now assume it to be a member of the euphorbia family, as it also exudes a milky sap when broken or abraded.

    • @summerrayneoakes
      @summerrayneoakes  5 лет назад +2

      There are definitely euphorbs and cynanchum that look an awful lot like jungle cacti!
