I’m one of these people that just got back into the hobby. I inherited my collection from my grandpa when he died back in the 90s and never bought anything since then. Fast forward to earlier this year and imagine my surprise when we now have pieces of memorabilia integrated into the cards, refractors, card grading, etc. blew my mind.

When I got back in the hobby in 2020, after being a collector in the 80s and 90s, I was shocked because there wasn’t any upper deck or topps baseball or basketball and other brands like fleer, metal, ultra, etc were gone.

That is awesome. Leave something for your offspring to investigate when you go. I think it's kinda poetic and should be a tradition almost. Makes you delve into a hobby and brings family around to talk about your life and what and why you would like this or that ect. Hobbies are fun. I got into coin collecting because of one of my grandfather's left me some awesome coins. And even my great grandpa left me his tackle box and he has so many collectibles in that box from Colorado in the 50s hahaha got me into that and many other old Western stuff. Sorry for the rant it's just a lot of fun. I grew up collecting mtg and Pokemon hahaha so...

Not hating on again i get it i've collected cards for almost 20 years i have many other passions and hobbies but sports and sports cards was my first one and I'm like tony in a way were i have a good memory and remember all the stats and history that some care about but dont go as in depth as the hardcore guys do i do get that part of it.

I love how he explains that breaking cases is a loss leader. Expect to lose 98.6% of the time. Sounds just like me explaining to my wife and in-laws when they go to the casino…you are never, ever going to end up a winner. The casino does not build hotels, restaurants, golf courses, theaters, and the like, on winners. Save your money, and buy the players that you like, and you will end up with a collection you love, and not dozens upon dozens of boxes full of crap.

  • @kenscardboard

Great advice for people who prospect. You lose 98.6% of the time. Really cool artwork in the Loupe shop. If I’m in Miami, I will check that place out. Great video footage as always. I like when you guys highlight a local card shop and a collection. I think it’s okay not to purchase a collection every time you make a video. Prospects are so frustrating to collect, especially when they may not even get their call up for 4 or more years from when their 1st bowman comes out. I just wait for the following year to collect the big names. Once there's been a new draft and everyone starts chasing the new names, I just start grabbing the previous years. I'll grab a bunch of cheap autos and chase a few of the top guys. Then throughout the season I'll check my boxes of prospects to see how they're doing. Had a michael harris elite extra tie dye auto that I won for $10 before last season and sold that for 300. He wasn't even a big name people were chasing. That made up for the tons of misses I buy, but it's fun checking up on them each year. It's most def a 98% loss rate tho. Buying basketball and football rookies is def easier to win with. Baseball Prospect ratings and draft positions really don't mean much. It's def more so with the prospect rank then draft position tho.

I held on to Pujols in 2016 and am glad I did, but he was proven then and even more proven now. WAR is everything in baseball cards because it is the defining factor of Hall of Fame chances, regardless if outliers wiggle their way in without it years down the line. If their war is on pace to reach 80 and up, they are a lock in the Hall. And around below that number is where the debate is.
