In this video i have explained you what is the best way to do the troubleshooting,
when you should use Sniffer command and when you should use debug commands.
Fortigate Sniffer command
best verbose for sniffer is 4. you can also add the count of packets after verbose but its not required as you can stop sniffer with ctrl+c button.
Diag sniffer packet any ' host 8.8.8.8 ' 4
Fortigate debug commands
diag debug disable
diag debug reset
diag debug flow filter add 8.8.8.8
diag debug flow filter port 443
diag debug flow show funtion-name enable
diag debug flow show ipprope-enable
diag debug flow trace start 100
diag debug enable
Fortigate Show session Command
diag sys session list | grep 8.8.8.8

For someone with Checkpoint/ASA/Junos experience and new to Fortigate, this video was very helpful to get me going in my new job where everything is Fortigate and Palos. Hope you have a similar video for Palo Alto firewall. Also, it would be helpful if you could mention how to redirect verbose traffic logs for Wireshark to a file on appliance because Putty buffer may not be large enough to handle few minutes of interesting traffic. Btw, does Fortigate or Palo allow tcpdump command in shell prompt if any?
