PREPARING YOUR VEHICLE FOR A FREEZE - Cold weather is very hard on batteries so make certain you replace a weak/questionable battery. Most shops and some auto parts stores will perform a battery test at no charge. - Running the correct viscosity motor oil is critical in cold weather. Viscosity simply measures how oil flows at different temperatures. A 0W20 motor oil has a lower viscosity at cold temperatures hence the “0” which allows the oil to flow quicker during start up when the engine is cold and provides the needed lubrication quicker. You can find the recommended viscosity in the Owner’s Manual. - Make sure your battery terminals are free of corrosion. If you notice a white or greenish color powdery substance on the battery terminals, have a shop take care of it and remember, battery corrosion is caustic and can cause injury. - Have the antifreeze/coolant checked for the adequate freezing point and if it is necessary to add antifreeze, make sure the correct type is added. You can check the Owner’s Manual for the recommended type of antifreeze. NEVER remove the radiator/cooling system cap when the vehicle is warm or hot as the antifreeze will be under pressure and very hot, which can cause injury. It’s best to check the antifreeze when the engine is cold. - You need to use windshield washer fluid in your windshield washer tank as it has anti-freezing properties. Using water can result in damage to the washer tank and fluid lines in the event of a freeze. - Do NOT pour warm or hot water on your windshield as it can cause the glass to crack. Use an ice scrapper to remove any ice and warm the vehicle up until the defroster can do its job. You can also use a De-Icer on your windshield. - A vehicle produces Carbon Monoxide which is very poisonous so NEVER warm up a vehicle in a confined space such as a garage, do it in an open, well-ventilated area. - If you have to unlock your door and the lock is frozen, do not force the key in the lock, instead use a lock De-Icer or you can simply put hand sanitizer on both sides of the keys before inserting it in the lock. The alcohol in the sanitizer can melt the ice. - Low temperatures will cause the tire air pressure to drop so make sure you check and adjust your tire pressure if necessary. A green valve stem cap, means the tire has been filled with nitrogen which should be used when adjusting tire pressure, however air can be used without causing a problem. If your Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) light remains luminated in the instrument cluster/dash after adjusting the tire pressure, check the spare tire pressure as it too can cause a TPMS light to come on.
