      It's fun to learn your way around a bike! I worked in a shop for almost 8 years learning the in's and out's but it's a lot less complicated and technical than you think so it's worth trying 1 or 2 things at a time and building up confidence to know your equipment better. Maybe don't start with a fork service! -Christina

    • @v1d300
      @v1d300 4 года назад +3

      @@pinkbike agreed 100%. I remember I started with the gear cable. First just disassembled it and cleaned it as the rain and mud ruined it (no internal routing). Then replaced it. The moved to chain and so on. Its really exciting and a sense of relief that you can tune up the bike as and when required very quickly.
      But it still takes few hours as servicing never goes as per plan (for an amateur like me).

  • @Yhigma
    @Yhigma 4 года назад +9

    0:53 every 10 rides would mean I have to do the lower service on my fork for my main bike twice a month. I agree doing it often makes the bike feel better, but I've settled for every ~4 months before it feels really terrible, but not so much time in the garage, more time riding

    What I need is a bike mechanic that would be willing for me to pay him/her to show me how to do basic tune ups & common fixes. I got my bike online & all that had to be done to put it together was put the handlebars on, the pedals, seat. I watched a RUclips video about initially putting your bike together where it said you should make sure you lube & tighten everything. Looked totally doable on the video. Not so much! I had to wait 2 weeks & pay a bike shop to fix whatever it was that I did wrong. I have had to take my bike in 2 more times for what is probably simple fixes after trail riding because that initial attempt for me went so wrong that I am afraid to try anything. Now I went on a trail where I fell, not bad, but moved my handlebars, seat position, & something is rattling, which is why I am watching this video. But there's no way I can do what is on this video! I am obviously not bike mechanically inclined which is costing me a nice chunk of change. Again it would be nice if I could just pay a mechanic to show me how to do basic things.

Pinkbike could you offer a full shock break down and rebuild class for the new die hard trail burners who are all riding different set ups would be much appreciated. The more a rider knows to fix the more dynamic a rider can be when they know the ins and outs of her or his rig. Stay blessed everyone

    For a normal rider, like me, this is wayyy overkill :D More like how take care of your bike like a pro
    I take it to a full service twice a year, before and after season

    • @TherealJJOliver
      @TherealJJOliver 2 года назад

      That is not efficient. Taking it before and after means the before season is redundant as it has not been used at all presumably for months. unless you have it on a trainer in the off season to use at home (but still most of the tune up would be redundant) take it before and mid season.

    • @pinkbike
      @pinkbike  4 года назад

      Sweet! Exciting! Manuals can be found online from the manufacturers so for your Shimano brakes or Marzocchi fork for example, hit up those sites. I check my bike for wear and tear almost always so I'm not stuck with one massive overhaul but can asses each part as needed. The suspension I don't let get too bad because it's super expensive to fix a major issue there -Christina
