I don’t know that much about jays life but I grew up watching him and now as a 30 year old, and car addict, the knowledge and respect he has for these cars is really cool. And his demeanor, just seems like …positive. Also , V16 :-0 I usually don’t pay attention til 1940s cars but I’m liking and learning more about the 30s and seeing how evolutionary jumps came out of experiments like this caddy.
I am an RF engineer, and the first thing that I thought, when he started the engine and heard poping in the mic, was that cables are not shielded. Kudos to Jay for the level of knowledge! :)
It’s not the cables, which even today aren’t shielded. It’s the spark plugs. Resistor spark plugs have been the norm for decades, to suppress this noise from audio.
@@Full_Otto_Bismarck Hi Joshua. A magneto doesn't replace an alternator (generator, in this case.) There could be other parts of the ignition system that cause electrical interference in modern electronics/radios, however if the spark plugs are not the restore type that's still the most likely source ... unless perhaps that metal cover acts as an effective RF shield (unlikely, since the hood and other metal sheets also don't block RF interference.)
@@thenexthobby Not an area i have much knowledge in, I just know that with older motorcycles when they are being filmed running they can create that popping distortion in the audio due to something in the electrical system, more than one person has said it was the magneto on said old bikes causing it. Im not an electrical engineer so I had no knowledge base to question it. I also had no idea spark plugs really changed that much over time and that the older ones could cause this interference. Interesting.
I remember seeing an old cartoon funny with a Cad V-16 at a gas station and the attendant asking the owner to shut it off cause he couldn't fill it fast enough, still, awesome !
There's a vast difference between vehicles owned by enthusiasts and vehicles owned by collectors/entrepreneurs. True enthusiasts keep, at least the bulk of, their collection road-worthy. Collectors/entrepreneurs are typically rarely more than less damaging purveyors of what many consider to be 'barn finds'. In other words, 'collecting dust' is still just 'collecting dust'. Many vehicles left in a barn were probably in just as good condition when first parked as those left to rot, unused, in a museum. Bravo to those of you that invest so much time, love and money into keeping these vehicles roadworthy.

@@joeyblazik7990 it actually makes little sense at all. I've seen so many instances where said guy has said car. Keeps it in his garage and just looks at it while having a glass of wine. Still maintains it, but almost never drives it, saving it for the next guy. To each their own.

He worked for Lawrence Fisher, who was President of the (then) Cadillac Motor Car Company. Larry Fisher, one of the Fisher brothers of Fisher Body fame - was responsible for hiring gifted folks like Mr. Seaholm and Harley Earl as their stylist for the original LaSalle and later the entire GM corporation. Great history on a truly great automobile. Thanks again for what you do.

Hi, Rick, Ernest Seaholm was my mother's uncle. The son of Swedish immigrants from Springfield, Mass, he was brilliant man, a self-taught engineer, and later after retiring from GM, Superintendant of the Birmingham Schools, which named its high school for him. I had a Peterson's publication around 1972 that had an article on the V16 Cadillacs with a photo of Uncle Ernest. His younger brother Oscar, to whom I was quite close, was flipping through the magazine and was floored to see his older brother on the page. Ernest also sent all his nieces and nephews to college during the Depression, which is how my mother met my father. In a sense, I owe my very exisitence to the V16 Cadillacs!

When I was a child I was dragged along to many car shows. There was a man here in South Jersey named Bill Johnson who had a V16. He drove it in to the shows. Such an impressive car. I've actually sat in the driver's seat! There can't be more than a handful left in existence.
When I was about 12 years old my family met a woman, Roslyn Shiplel the mother and this was in Modoc county California in 1976. She watched the Hindenburg catch 🔥 and go down in New Jersey. She was on a greyhound bus and the bus driver pulled over she was on pulled over.

Absolute beautiful piece of machinery, it really stands as the spirit of the combustion engine. Pretty sure they made the concept car Cadillac Sixteen as a homage for the older V16 Caddies, which is something I always appreciate... The way a car company respects its heritage by creating newer cars resembling the old classics. As someone at the age of 25, these cars definitely excite me more than modern cars nowadays. Everything from the shape, the engine, the technology used back then and the comfort truly what makes driving these car a new experience everytime.
Agreed! It's too bad that where they once said "let's build something amazing" they now tend toward "we could build something amazing if we wanted to." It would be so cool seeing Sixteens on the streets!

I'm picturing Clark Gable, Hedy Lamarr, Lauren Bacall, Cary Grant, Tyrone Power...what a unique time the 1930s were. Sheer elegance. Hands down one of my absolute favorite videos on this channel!
I have a 1:18 scale model car of this, when I first got it I was so confused by how the back doors were configured since the model isn't very premium and the rear doors don't open. Discovered later that that panel came up in real life, and now seeing it actually being operated and discussed, I can further appreciate the operation and purpose of it, very cool!
@@AmerAhmad Well, I have a 1932 Cadillac V16 Phaeton, but oddly when I type it in on Amazon I get what appears to be the exact same car I have (but a different color) with the Monopoly guy plastered all over it, and apparently comes with a Monopoly guy figurine. That is an extremely strange decision by someone... But I'm not seeing a regular one on there anywhere. Got mine many years ago.

Beautiful and breath taking I love everything about it cars back then had class a personality of their own and each was different and an example of pure art.
In the early 1940's, my dad a 1928 model (it wasn't a V-16). When Pearl Harbor was attacked he joined the Marines. Upon returning home, his car had been sold because the US government was badly in need of aluminum. Sadly, it had been scrapped & the body melted down.
A few years ago I was fueling up at a Shell Station when a black Cadillac sedan from the 1930's with a V-16 pulled up behind me as if it just came from the dealer's showroom. The owner was nice enough to show me the engine. It's not often you get to meet one of the cars you really like from those days.
When I was 23 I owned a1964 Belvedere,1965 Riviera,1972 challenger,1980 olds Cutlass Supreme Brougham,1977 Ford F 150,and two motorcycles a 1979 KZ 650 with a custom paint job and a stock 1973 Kawasaki 900,I didn't have a lot of money but I kept a job since I was 17 ,now I'm 62 and life happens so I just have 3 pickups 2 Ford's and a Dodge
I got to ride in a '48 Packard last year. It had the straight 8 engine and even being 73 years old it still got along quite well. The seats were like grandma's old sofas that just swallowed you up and you didn't want to get out of. Though it did handle like a bathtub which made it a bit uneasy to ride in with all the body roll. I would LOVE to find me one.
I literally live vicariously through you and these videos, Jay! Thank you for taking us mere mortals on automotive adventures that we can only fantasize about!
Jay, This with out a doubt was one of your best and my new favorite because you talked true history, a knowledge so few have. I am always thankful for the fidbitts of history I pick up from you.. Jay has research done on these vehicles prior to filming. Primarily to refresh his memory and to provide detail. Then he follows an outline for the show episode. Everyone knows the outline.. He does read automotive articles every morning.
So much given here - seeing hearing engine start / open hood, and Jay's respect for the progress of humanity / technology in noting 20 years previous was horse and wagon. Great video experience.
I just today, just a few hours ago, got back from Nethercutt's. Absolutely off the charts amazing and fun. All because of Jay's video on the Isotta Fraschini from Nethercutt's. The guided tour is the best $10 you will ever spend. You simply cannot absorb it all, between the cars, the stories, the music boxes, organs, pianos, works of art, etc. Our tour guide is one impressive, skilled individual, and a great story teller. We braved the 111 degree heat and it was well worth it. Oh, the AC is outstanding.....
Greetings: Not my favorite person (no disrespect), however this is my favorite car. I applaud Cadillac, the original owner, RIP, the family that owns it now and Jay 4 the opportunity 2 observe such a beauty of a time when there was respect, dignity, pride and appreciation. I greatly appreciate the fact that after Jay had that electric nightmare of a "Cadillac" on this redeems him hugely. This is a Cadillac and this is what they should be building on this level. Not everyone should be driving a Cadillac. Throughout Caddys history, there have been a mistake here and there (see Cimmaron) but never an entire two decades of unwanted rebadged Tahoes and Impalas.
You know sometimes I think I have no words left? That even Shakespeare himself might also just run out of words when we see and hear all about this, automobile of automobiles, Cadillac of Cadillacs. Thank you for letting us in to see it all so wonderfully. Paul
A friend of mine has a '32 Caddy V16. I was at his garage a few months ago and he was working on it 'cause one bank of cylinders wasn't working. He said it was now a V8 and I corrected him- it was temporarily a slant 8.
My dad had a 1930 Packard 12 cylinder. Three tone red. Like driving your living room around, so fine. I would like to drive this beauty If Jay says this drives best, he would know, he has driven them all.

Amazing to see one of these running. When I was kid, I had a book called Cadillac: Standard of the World or something like that. It had LaSalle and Cadillac and the V16 just seemed unbelievable to me as a nipper. 16 cylinders??!! So great that the Nethercutt collection have this running and are happy for us to see it working. If I ever get to LA for a holiday I will ask if I can camp inside the Nethercutt - probably be there for a week at least...

I worked at the Ontario Island retreat for a few day's ..... quite a place..... it was then I heard about their car collection. I must still go and visit the place... I have seen it a few times on TV... and recognized it by it's massive front entry doors... A very enjoyable few days working on the island for sure.... almost like a Bond Island retreat. Nethercutt Lodge.....what a place located in Lake of the Woods,,,, Ontario. I was resident at the time on Manitoba....
What a glorious car of times well passed. These of course can’t be called ‘manufactured’. The chassis perhaps were, but body’s of ultimate luxury automobiles were purely fine craftsmanship. And a V16, phew. Car models sold having them in the last 100 years can perhaps be counted with 3 fingers to my best knowledge. Even Rolls Royce ultimately never have sold them, although they had one experimentally developed which could be popped into the Phantom Drophead, but only one time have they ever done so for Rowan Atkinson as Johnny English. Doesn't quite sound right, govt fudging numbers, you could buy a warehouse full of model T's or a couple of nice houses, which means you should probably add a zero to get the realistic price comparison. 112k buys very little today.
@@noth606 in 1930 it would've been a Model A for at least $500 so about a dozen of those for this Caddy. That about lines up with the cheapest cars today e.g. Nissan Versa being $15k (except with a lot more required safety and features). If Cadillac still made a v12 or v16 today it'd probably be priced around at least $150k
@@papa_pt The trick now is to extract the energy from various sources, gasoline, battery, diesel, hydrogen, fuel cell, methanol, ethanol, rotary, sterling, even steam. That and the infrastructure to fill the car back up. The energy density of fossil fuels is very high, but the efficiency is low, 35%.
Gotta admit I love seeing Pre-WWII and WWI cars. its like looking at the point where our automotive history diverged. Most things were open wheeled back than. now the only things open wheeled can mostly be found on track and seldom anywhere else.
I met Mr and Mrs JB in the 70’ with our father who was a friend. We had lunch and visited the ´upstairs’ piano area… After lunch, as always, he went for a spin that day in a V16 Cadillac convertible . Unforgettable souvenir

Too many people have forgotten that Cadillac engines were sought after for racing engines too. My grandfather worked all his life at Buick and his father was Chief Chassis Engineer for Buick and worked on the so called "Flint Buick"... Buick's first car. I used to have his diaries on all the stuff they did to design the car but it was lost in a fire. Cadillac today is still making performance cars. I have a 2014 CTS-V coupe and I love it. Drive it every Friday to work... I can't wait for Friday.

I think the flywheel on these engines weighs about 60-70 pounds. Once that was spinning, the motor didn’t need to spin faster…the inertia from just the flywheel did all the work. Amazing cars…amazing era….American perfection

I had the very distinct pleasure of going to a Netherctut Christmas dinner and meeting JB Nethercut. What a neat and gracious gentleman who treated his employees very well. Not only did he have great cars but musical machinery and so much more.
Since I can't "officially" give you more than one thumb up here, I'll do it like this... 👍👍👍👍👍 If I were to win the lottery, I'd have one of these built out of carbon fiber wherever applicable and have a modern 800+ hp engine in it. Beautiful doesn't come near to how this car looks.
Remember well visiting the Nethercutt Collection. J.B. was still alive and active. Most every car in the lower level garage had "Im J B", "JB2", etc. as it's license plate... Then there was Cloud 9 and also the theatre and ice cream parlor up on top (which does not exist anymore...) Totally awesome collection !
When built, this 1930 Cadillac was all about new technology, and it was beautifully executed, almost art. As we go green, I would be hard pressed to say the same thing about most new heat pumps and low-flow toilets. Would that we had a little more of the 1930's sense of style.
There is nothing inherently ugly about energy efficient heat pumps or low flow toilets. It's up to the designer to make something look beautiful, and has nothing to do with the devices purpose. Don't conflate the two
@@wyskass861 agree and disagree. Generally speaking, once a technology is mostly perfected, it puts designers in a bit of a box where their creativity is greatly limited. There is a reason why so many crossovers look very similar, particularly at a glance. Efficiency of inside space, aerodynamics, and a million safety regulations greatly limit a designers ability to make something very unique and beautiful. Occasionally they overcome this, but generally they do not.
@@bannedbycommieyoutube5time920 the models in the 1920's and 1930's seemed to handle this problem by making the device the main showcase. The front grille for example is the ample part of the automobile in the 1930's.
Keep in mind this work of automotive art originalky cost between $5,350 -$9,000 depending on level of customization at a time when the average home cost $1,500. Today such works of automobile art could be created if there was a mass market for an automobile that costs 3.5 - 6 times what the average home costs today.
Yes he has the new but the old all fixed up really steals the show. We can't know where we're heading if we don't take a look back at where we've been. Jay does an excellent job capturing that spirit.

100% true. I once saw a "collection" stored indoors where the owner didn't even bother keeping the tires inflated.

His younger brother Oscar, to whom I was quite close, was flipping through the magazine and was floored to see his older brother on the page. Ernest also sent all his nieces and nephews to college during the Depression, which is how my mother met my father. In a sense, I owe my very exisitence to the V16 Cadillacs!

When I was a child I was dragged along to many car shows. There was a man here in South Jersey named Bill Johnson who had a V16. He drove it in to the shows. Such an impressive car. I've actually sat in the driver's seat! There can't be more than a handful left in existence.
When I was about 12 years old my family met a woman, Roslyn Shiplel the mother and this was in Modoc county California in 1976. She watched the Hindenburg catch 🔥 and go down in New Jersey. She was on a greyhound bus and the bus driver pulled over she was on pulled over.
Just wanted to extend my deepest gratitude, years of humor of course; but to share your knowledge of cars & allowing so many to hear & see these classics is just tremendous.

Absolute beautiful piece of machinery, it really stands as the spirit of the combustion engine. Pretty sure they made the concept car Cadillac Sixteen as a homage for the older V16 Caddies, which is something I always appreciate... The way a car company respects its heritage by creating newer cars resembling the old classics. As someone at the age of 25, these cars definitely excite me more than modern cars nowadays. Everything from the shape, the engine, the technology used back then and the comfort truly what makes driving these car a new experience everytime.
Agreed! It's too bad that where they once said "let's build something amazing" they now tend toward "we could build something amazing if we wanted to." It would be so cool seeing Sixteens on the streets!

I have a 1:18 scale model car of this, when I first got it I was so confused by how the back doors were configured since the model isn't very premium and the rear doors don't open. Discovered later that that panel came up in real life, and now seeing it actually being operated and discussed, I can further appreciate the operation and purpose of it, very cool!

@@AmerAhmad Well, I have a 1932 Cadillac V16 Phaeton, but oddly when I type it in on Amazon I get what appears to be the exact same car I have (but a different color) with the Monopoly guy plastered all over it, and apparently comes with a Monopoly guy figurine. That is an extremely strange decision by someone... But I'm not seeing a regular one on there anywhere. Got mine many years ago.

Beautiful and breath taking I love everything about it cars back then had class a personality of their own and each was different and an example of pure art.
In the early 1940's, my dad a 1928 model (it wasn't a V-16). When Pearl Harbor was attacked he joined the Marines. Upon returning home, his car had been sold because the US government was badly in need of aluminum. Sadly, it had been scrapped & the body melted down.

A few years ago I was fueling up at a Shell Station when a black Cadillac sedan from the 1930's with a V-16 pulled up behind me as if it just came from the dealer's showroom. The owner was nice enough to show me the engine. It's not often you get to meet one of the cars you really like from those days.
When I was 23 I owned a1964 Belvedere,1965 Riviera,1972 challenger,1980 olds Cutlass Supreme Brougham,1977 Ford F 150,and two motorcycles a 1979 KZ 650 with a custom paint job and a stock 1973 Kawasaki 900,I didn't have a lot of money but I kept a job since I was 17 ,now I'm 62 and life happens so I just have 3 pickups 2 Ford's and a Dodge

I got to ride in a '48 Packard last year. It had the straight 8 engine and even being 73 years old it still got along quite well. The seats were like grandma's old sofas that just swallowed you up and you didn't want to get out of. Though it did handle like a bathtub which made it a bit uneasy to ride in with all the body roll.

I just today, just a few hours ago, got back from Nethercutt's. Absolutely off the charts amazing and fun. All because of Jay's video on the Isotta Fraschini from Nethercutt's. The guided tour is the best $10 you will ever spend. You simply cannot absorb it all, between the cars, the stories, the music boxes, organs, pianos, works of art, etc. Our tour guide is one impressive, skilled individual, and a great story teller. We braved the 111 degree heat and it was well worth it. Oh, the AC is outstanding.....

I greatly appreciate the fact that after Jay had that electric nightmare of a "Cadillac" on this redeems him hugely. This is a Cadillac and this is what they should be building on this level. Not everyone should be driving a Cadillac. Throughout Caddys history, there have been a mistake here and there (see Cimmaron) but never an entire two decades of unwanted rebadged Tahoes and Impalas.

A friend of mine has a '32 Caddy V16. I was at his garage a few months ago and he was working on it 'cause one bank of cylinders wasn't working. He said it was now a V8 and I corrected him- it was temporarily a slant 8.

The engineers in charge of the distribution of this engine had a great challenge in front of them, and they carried it out amazingly.
Fantastic! I've seen this car at the Nethercutt, but didn't see the engine and certainly didn't see it run. Thanks to the Nethercutt and Jay for bringing it by and letting it roam under its own power.
Amazing to see one of these running. When I was kid, I had a book called Cadillac: Standard of the World or something like that. It had LaSalle and Cadillac and the V16 just seemed unbelievable to me as a nipper. 16 cylinders??!! So great that the Nethercutt collection have this running and are happy for us to see it working. If I ever get to LA for a holiday I will ask if I can camp inside the Nethercutt - probably be there for a week at least...

I worked at the Ontario Island retreat for a few day's ..... quite a place..... it was then I heard about their car collection. I must still go and visit the place... I have seen it a few times on TV... and recognized it by it's massive front entry doors... A very enjoyable few days working on the island for sure.... almost like a Bond Island retreat. Nethercutt Lodge.....what a place located in Lake of the Woods,,,, Ontario. I was resident at the time on Manitoba....

What a glorious car of times well passed. These of course can’t be called ‘manufactured’. The chassis perhaps were, but body’s of ultimate luxury automobiles were purely fine craftsmanship. And a V16, phew. Car models sold having them in the last 100 years can perhaps be counted with 3 fingers to my best knowledge. Even Rolls Royce ultimately never have sold them, although they had one experimentally developed which could be popped into the Phantom Drophead, but only one time have they ever done so for Rowan Atkinson as Johnny English. What a magnificent automobile this. Thank you for showing. Cherio and Ciao.

Doesn't quite sound right, govt fudging numbers, you could buy a warehouse full of model T's or a couple of nice houses, which means you should probably add a zero to get the realistic price comparison. 112k buys very little today.
@@noth606 in 1930 it would've been a Model A for at least $500 so about a dozen of those for this Caddy. That about lines up with the cheapest cars today e.g. Nissan Versa being $15k (except with a lot more required safety and features). If Cadillac still made a v12 or v16 today it'd probably be priced around at least $150k

The trick now is to extract the energy from various sources, gasoline, battery, diesel, hydrogen, fuel cell, methanol, ethanol, rotary, sterling, even steam. That and the infrastructure to fill the car back up. The energy density of fossil fuels is very high, but the efficiency is low, 35%.
Gotta admit I love seeing Pre-WWII and WWI cars. its like looking at the point where our automotive history diverged. Most things were open wheeled back than. now the only things open wheeled can mostly be found on track and seldom anywhere else.

Too many people have forgotten that Cadillac engines were sought after for racing engines too. My grandfather worked all his life at Buick and his father was Chief Chassis Engineer for Buick and worked on the so called "Flint Buick"... Buick's first car. I used to have his diaries on all the stuff they did to design the car but it was lost in a fire. Cadillac today is still making performance cars. I have a 2014 CTS-V coupe and I love it. Drive it every Friday to work... I can't wait for Friday.

I think the flywheel on these engines weighs about 60-70 pounds. Once that was spinning, the motor didn’t need to spin faster…the inertia from just the flywheel did all the work. Amazing cars…amazing era….American perfection

I had the very distinct pleasure of going to a Netherctut Christmas dinner and meeting JB Nethercut. What a neat and gracious gentleman who treated his employees very well.
Not only did he have great cars but musical machinery and so much more.
Since I can't "officially" give you more than one thumb up here, I'll do it like this... 👍👍👍👍👍 If I were to win the lottery, I'd have one of these built out of carbon fiber wherever applicable and have a modern 800+ hp engine in it. Beautiful doesn't come near to how this car looks.

The drag from the convertible top on the car at speed would account for at least 3 Mpg alone!! It looks like a parachute!!
Remember well visiting the Nethercutt Collection. J.B. was still alive and active. Most every car in the lower level garage had "Im J B", "JB2", etc. as it's license plate... Then there was Cloud 9 and also the theatre and ice cream parlor up on top (which does not exist anymore...)

When built, this 1930 Cadillac was all about new technology, and it was beautifully executed, almost art. As we go green, I would be hard pressed to say the same thing about most new heat pumps and low-flow toilets. Would that we had a little more of the 1930's sense of style.
There is nothing inherently ugly about energy efficient heat pumps or low flow toilets. It's up to the designer to make something look beautiful, and has nothing to do with the devices purpose. Don't conflate the two
@@wyskass861 agree and disagree. Generally speaking, once a technology is mostly perfected, it puts designers in a bit of a box where their creativity is greatly limited.
There is a reason why so many crossovers look very similar, particularly at a glance. Efficiency of inside space, aerodynamics, and a million safety regulations greatly limit a designers ability to make something very unique and beautiful. Occasionally they overcome this, but generally they do not.

@@bannedbycommieyoutube5time920 the models in the 1920's and 1930's seemed to handle this problem by making the device the main showcase. The front grille for example is the ample part of the automobile in the 1930's.
Keep in mind this work of automotive art originalky cost between $5,350 -$9,000 depending on level of customization at a time when the average home cost $1,500. Today such works of automobile art could be created if there was a mass market for an automobile that costs 3.5 - 6 times what the average home costs today.
I think that's the most beautiful car I've seen on your show, which means it's probably the most beautiful car I've ever seen. Wow!!
