  • Sometimes it is said that raising a child takes a whole village. During the 19th century and early 20th century, this was by all accounts the reality in Iceland. Especially in the villages and towns around the country where fishing was the primary industry and fishermen went out to sea in all kinds of weather and conditions. Sometimes for days, sometimes for weeks, and sometimes, after the arrival of the processing vessels, a month or more at a time.
This weekend, we celebrate Sjómannadagurinn, or Fishermen's Day, in honor of the brave people who have braved the Arctic Ocean to support Icleand's main industry and lifeline.
As a part of that, our new Norður journal story, The Fisherman's Wife, tells the story of the families of fishermen and the pivotal role they played in the community, often unseen but never unfelt, maintaining the fabric of Icelandic society against the relentless, unforgiving backdrop of the sea.
